Greetings all,
My 13 yr old daughter is a blazingly good Expert Guitarist in the game and LOVES to play all of the Boston songs on guitar. These days when I walk in the door from work I am usually greeted by "Hitchin a Ride" or "Rock & Roll Band" blasting from my speakers with a RB note chart being obliterated on the TV.
She had never heard of Boston before the game and she has not only made me puchase Boston's Debut CD to put on her iPod, but she is playing it for her 8th grader friends (without embarassment or reservations, I might add.)
To top it all off, she wants me to pick up tickets for us to go to see them when they come through Houston on the 22nd of June!
She even admitted to me that her favorite band, Paramore, doesn't create music as "deep or complex" as Boston!
Thank you HMX...$170.00 + well spent!

Well, at least she has decent enough tastes in modern bands... Paramore may be pretty light fare, but they aren't too bad.
I remember my dad dusting off his LPs of Boston for me to hear as a little kid (eight or nine years old)... and I asked him to buy me their Greatest Hits album when it came out back in 1997 (when I was finishing up my freshman year of high school).
The classics never go out of style. That's why they're the classics. :)

What a great story!
Just to add to that, my 12 year old brother - after letting him and his friends borrow Rock Band for his birthday party sleep-over - has gone out and bought ALL the Hives CDs, and the best of Bowie. My parents are loving being able to play the CDs THEY love (Bowie's Diamond Dogs from my mom, a lot of Outlaws, southern rock and blues from my dad) and having him be just as excited.

As an aside, I was at lunch today with a co-worker who I routinely jam with. She owns the PS2 version and I have the 360 version, so typically I lug mine over to her place.
Anyhow, the opening notes of "Something About You" start filtering through the radio, and she immediately says "Man, this would be AWESOME in Rock Band." Had to stifle a laugh as I told her, yes, as a matter of fact, it IS awesome in Rock Band. :)

Not some guy off the street -- Michael Sweet of Stryper. Say what you will about them, but he can carry a tune, and I have no doubt he'll do well with the Boston classics.

Okay, then, two questions for you to answer.
1) Who would you rather see on vocals?
2) When would it be acceptable to you for the remainder of the band to begin touring again?

Make a new band. Quit trying to rape a legacy for $$$. There is a reason that the last few Boston albums have been lacking and especially Walk On was lacking. You need a soul to make good music. I guess you can technically carry on reproducing it like Karoke for the cash and find someone that can technically hit the notes, but that's not the same.

Stryper is one of my all time favorite metal bands, I'm glad Michael Sweet is continuing his career in singing after the band retired.
This is what I think is their best song: Free- Stryper

That is awesome to hear, my buddy was asking me the other day if I have RB and/or GH and I told him both then he went to tell me how is nephew is asking his dad for some of the classic rock cds (Bowie, Who, Stones, Boston, Police and more) its just good too see that the youth has taken interest in the classics. Long Live Classic Rock !!!
P.S. - I kinda agree you can somewhat, IMHO replace every memeber of a band except the singer, once that changes the whole sound does also (ie Van Hagar not bad w/ Sammy just not the Van Halen I knew w/ Dave).

My 9 year old daughter made me buy her the cd, too. I have it on vinyl. LOL That's wasn't workin' for her. She loves them. Coincidentally, I live in Houston, too.
Michael Sweet vs. Brad Delp....I'm just not sure how I feel about that. I think Brad Delp is incomparable. I think Michael Sweet could stand in with Styx but Boston, I don't know. I'd have to hear something before passing judgment.

I remember when Guitar Hero 1 came out, I was so happy there was a Boston song on it. All my friends laughed at me for insisting on what a great band they are. They ended up getting pretty into More Than A Feeling, but they still didn't really believe me.
Then along comes Rock Band, and I get to see them experience the utter awesomeness that is Foreplay/Long Time for the first time.
Within a week, they both had gone out and gotten Boston albums.

This is a great thread! I guess you could say I'm of the "younger generation" and I hadn't listened to Boston before. But since downloading the Boston pack on RB, now their songs have a permanent place on my iPod and are blasted in my car on the way to/from work every day. :)

I agree. My mom and I are HUGE Journey fans and we both agree on that. Journey isn't Journey if Steve Perry isn't in the frontman position. They're coming here in concert this month and I've been trying to decide if I really want to go or not. I'd like to see them but I'm torn if I want to pay the money to watch them without Steve Perry. I told my mom yesterday that I wish I had been older in the 70's/80's so I could have taken part in the music scene and actually see some of the greats while they were still together.

Exactly what I thought when I saw this video and similar ones. I was a little let down when seeing Journey without Steve Perrry and Van Halen minus David Lee Roth. Both were great shows, but left me feeling a little let down. I will take a pass on the Boston concert for the same reason. :(

That's really cool. People getting into music because of Rock Band and 13-year-olds with open minds to new music are both awesome.
I have to say, though, make sure you pay the favor back to her by not assuming that your tastes are the ultimate guide to what counts as "real music". I'm 32 and it scares me how many people on this forum think music ended a few decades ago. Maybe in a few years, you can ask your daughter whose records you ought to check out.

Guitar Hero started the process, and RB has continued and refined it.
A few weeks ago, my sons had some money to spend and their grandparents took them to the mall.

I'm 30. I listen to EVERYTHING. My brother thinks I have the strangest, most eclectic mp3 player he's ever seen. I am a HUGE 70's/80's fan. I love rock, r&b, pop...whatever. I'll admit that I like more of what has been than what is now but I do still have a lot of mainstream rock on my computer...Breaking Benjamin, Shinedown, Flaw, 3 Days Grace, 3 Doors Down, Chevelle, Seether, etc. I like some of the new pop that has come out but I'd rather listen to Toto, Belinda Carlisle, Pat Benatar, Chicago if I'm going to go the route of more poppy stuff. My daughter loves music from now but like me, she prefers the music of then. I'm trying to expose her to everything so she will have a variety of musical tastes, like I was raised.
On the subject of "old" bands that have moved on with new singers, I'm having issues with how I feel about The New Cars, too. I really don't want to hear anyone other than Benjamin Orr sing "Just What I Needed." Todd Rundgren was a strange choice, for me.

Well, everything i can say is, being 15 myself, i have also taken a HUGE interest in the old classics. Mostly the 80's. I mostly listen to the songs by Metallica, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. In fact, right now, im listening to Judas Priest's Screaming For Vengeance, via Youtube, and the video is a FC run by wuLFe79. So i can only say that GH/Rock Band has been a good thing for me. It has really taught me to love GOOD music. My favortite band right now is Metallica, which music i listen to everyday. I liked the music they made in the 80's.
So i can only say, thanks to Guitar Hero and mostly Rock Band, i have been saviored.

You make a great point and I don't count myself as "one of those." A quick run through on my iPod shows some newer stuff:
Sublime, Dashboard Confessional, Maroon 5, a bunch of Foo Fighters, Puddle of Mudd, The Flys, Lifehouse, One Republic, Cobra Starship, The Kooks, The Raconteurs, Paramore and Sum 41 along with a little of everything else.
(Everyone: Please don't turn this into a band bash, I listen to what I want to listen to, and could care less about your thoughts on the Bands I just listed.)
I agree that its easy to get "stuck" in an era, or type of music, simply because music tends to be so intertwined with the memories that listeners gather over time.
Young people don't have the nostalgia associated with a particular song like those that grew up with it have, and therefore they tend to be more open to new music and less... let's call it entrenched.
Unfortunately, it sometimes works the other way around, some adults would rather not listen to music that has no memories attached, prefering to stick with songs that have meanings or associations for them that give them the warm-and-fuzzies.
BTW, I'm 51.
I will also say that RB/GH have the opposite effect on me, it has opened me to some bands/songs I never heard before and I like. So these types of games and I'm sure many will agree has worked both ways.

I does work both ways...I play RB with my 8 year old boy just about every night. I have come to know bands that I wouldn't have known about otherwise, as has he. It's very cool to hear your 8-year old tell you how much he loves The Police, Rush & Boston. :)

Well, every song is new to you if you've never heard it before.
The real issue is just getting people to hear it for the first time. Age shouldn't have anything to do with it. If someone's gonna hate it just cuz it's old, then we have a word for that: ignorant.

I swore on my 16th birthday (when I didn't get a car for my birthday and only had about $86.34 saved towards buying one from working at a crappy after school job) that MY kids would get hooked up with a set of wheels when they turned 16.

Amazing thread...this is exactly the type of "success story" I love to see. It can't be said enough, HMX's DLC patterns really help to educate the masses about all of the different styles of music out there.
Great job!
It also reminds me of my early days. My parents where into the Beatles, Zepplin, Cream etc and listening to them made me appreciate music in general. My parents bought me my first record when I was 4 (KISS DESTROYER!) and I would carry the album with me to school. Classic. Other people thought Kiss were freaks but my parents loved the fact that I was blazing my own path and were gonna support me no matter what.

I am 15 years old, and while I am ashamed to admit it, guitar hero pretty much shaped my music taste. No, I am not the type of person who listens to only what is on guitar hero, but it helped.
My first music game was Guitar Hero 2. None of my friends liked it, but I gave it a try and was mesmerized from the start. I sucked, obviously, but I felt that I could get better. So, after playing the crap out of it, I started reading about the actual bands. I would spend hours reading about "the history of rock".
Sure, when I listen to The Beatles, there is no nostalgia factor. However, The Beatles are good enough to be great, with or without nostalgia. The same applies to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, old-Metallica (I am not a new Metallica hater... there new stuff is actually quite good, though very different.).

Well, I, like the stereotypical teenager, only really cared for the vocalist, and didn't know the other's names. Guitar Hero (and the preceding Rock Band, though I was pretty up to speed by then) really just got me into the bands. Now I can't listen to a single song without listening to the album, or even listen to an album without knowing the band members and band history up to the recording of that album.
Though I think I'm just weird.

your daughter is way more open minded when it comes to music than me when i was her age(look at me talkin like im old, it was only 3 years ago lol). me i listen to lots of hip hop(not the kind on the radio that kind disgusts me im talking about hip hop that takes actual lyrical ability) and back then i would not give a time or day for rock music... boy has Guitar Hero and Rock Band changed me... i often find myself searching Project Playlist for Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix(good stuff)... i just want to thank HMX for creating games that made me listen to what my dad has tried to make me listen to since the day i was born! with all that said i still listen to mah hip hop... can't live without some of it...

When I was a teenager, I liked the guys who wrote the songs. My favorite musicians were Brian Wilson and George Harrison (because I liked his songs better than John and Paul's)
Now my favorite musicians are Kerry Livgren, George Harrison, and Tom Scholz. (Don't like the Beach Boys as much as I used to)

the OP just gave me hope for the future.. :D
I was certain we were going to all be doomed to a world where all music would be eventually created by luda-crest.."Dirty, dirty, dirty mouth, y'all!" (had to toss in the simpsons quote :D ) then again bon jovi has new stuff out all the time so not all is ever lost :D

I am glad for you that your child now likes what you consider to be good music. As for me, if I ever have a child who liked Boston, I may just put him or her up for adoption. :)

It's a funny thing... I had the opposite experience when I was growing up.
When I was in high school back in the mid-to-late 90s, I was surrounded by these suburban "wanna-bes." There was this whole group of stoner-jocks who were downright obnoxious with turning words like "ghetto" and "corrupt" into catch phrases, not to mention this slacker who automatically embraced any white rapper and was the spitting image, attitude wise, of the guy in the "Pretty Fly for a White Guy." On top of that, my sister was heavy into Alternative music, and would blare "Zombies" by the Cranberries repeatedly! Drove me insane! So, I associated the music of the day with these morons from school and my sister's irritating habits, which all drove me into another direction, a direction I found when I stumbled upon VH1's 8-Track Flashback, which on one fateful day opened with Stevie Wonder's "Superstition."
It helps that at the time I was a trumpet player, and the song has an instantly memorable horn riff. But from that moment on, the floodgates were open. I started re-examining stuff from my Dad's music library, rediscovering the Cars, Talking Heads, Grateful Dead, ELO, the Eagles, CSNY, and others, while finding my own independence by digging into R&B of the era like War, Gladys Knight, P-Funk, the Temptations, the Ohio Players, the Spinners, the list goes on and on, not to mention rock pioneers like Chuck Berry, Lloyd Price, the Coasters, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc. So I became primarily a fan of older music, though I still kept a very few tabs on more current fare.
It was Guitar Hero 2, and later Rock Band, that reaquainted me with what I was missing out on at the time, not to mention more current stuff. Now I'm really starting to dig the Smashing Pumpkins, own CDs by Wolfmother, Foo Fighters and QotSA, and can even appreciate a group like Paramore, who are poppy as all get-out but still have a good sound to them. They're a far cry from the freakin' Spice Girls crud I had to tolerate back in the day, that's for sure.
So OP, you happen to have quite the cool daughter. Even though we came about it in different ways, I can certainly relate to that "moment of personal discovery" where you appreciate what's probably been around you the whole time in the first place.

guys its not that surprising that a 13 year old would be open-minded music-wise
its usually around 10 or so that kids start to listen to more music

Yep. That's about the age that I decided to quit listening to the Top 40 music stations. I branched out to the alternative station, then classic rock, now Rock Band has turned me on to metal.

This gives me hope that there are other people in my generation(under 20) that can enjoy modern music as well as classics. I have music in my library from today(Paramore, All-American Rejects etc) and I also have a ton from the 60s and 70s(Beatles, Aerosmith, KISS to name a few) but as much as I love the new music(which I do), it's a shame that people under 20(or 30 for that matter) that listen to new stuff as well as the older classics are so few and far between.

Great to read that - my 5 year old is picking up a lot of the songs her mother and I play in BWT, and hopefully it's all creating a positive rock and roll impression on her!

When i become a parent, RB will be mandatory for all of my kids. I call it responsible parenting. Drubgs for Rockband. PLus by the time I have kids, Led Zep DLC will be available....hopefully. Either that or I would have already spent my kids entire college fund on DLC

Your five-year-old daughter goes around singing songs about raping and killing native Americans?? Lollercopter!
That's great that younger kids are still getting into GOOD music. It's not all about "having a good beat that you can dance to"... complex meaningful lyrics and talented musicianship make for better music any day of the week!
In closing: Mile Cyrus FTL! Fergie FTL! Akon FTL! Boston FTW!!! Rush FTW!!! Judas Priest FTW!!! (these are just examples, there are plenty more)
I really wish there were more good bands around nowadays... maybe when my generation (Gen Y) gets old enough to start forming real bands (We're almost there... I'm 19 already) there will be an influx of talent that might change the music industry... the way the baby boomer talent did. Maybe. Of course we'll have to get over the hump of commercialization in the music world...

what a great story. probably the best story I've read all day.
nice to see younger generation appreciate classic rock.
now that I think about it I was probably 15 when I started listening/liking Boston. in fact we had their greatest hits on repeat when me and my friends went on a road trip when we were 18. long time ago that was.
anyways... thank you for sharing :)

Anything can be considered bad music. That's the beauty of music, it is subjective.

My 10 year old son made me buy him Crue Fest tickets for the Dallas show. He said your not going if I'm not. He's been to 4 concerts so far. Posion, Sammy Hager, Aerosmith, Ratt.

So yesterday I'm playing Peace of Mind by Boston on drums, and when it gets to the chorus (the drum rolls) my little girl, barely three, is playing with her "baby dolls" on the other side of our family room starts singing "Take a look ahead, Take a look ahead, Look ahead!!!!"
All the while my 18 month old is banging away on his kiddie drum with his kiddie sticks.
Man, how frickin cool is this game?!?!

it's amazing that her favorite band is paramore and she can actually appreciate boston. two completely different styles of music and musicianship.
Good job!
QFT! It's great to see people being able to appreciate all kinds of music, regardless of the age of the person or the music.

You could also wave the finger at the artist who recorded said music and not support their work by buying it.
Thats what I am all about baby!
