I personally love the band Ratt. Def Leppard and Kix are runner ups. What are your favorite Glam/Hair Metal bands? (If you like the genre.)

Oh, jeez... this is hard because I'm not much of a fan and I think it's questionable about whether or not Van Halen's a hair band.

If we're counting Van Halen as hair metal, they're #1 for me. Otherwise, I'll go with Spinal Tap. If they don't count, I'll go with Motley Crue or Winger, though I'm not a big fan of either. Ratt and Skid Row would probably be after them since I don't know enough songs to judge them.

Listen to all of Ratt's songs from Out of the Cellar, then you'll know.

I'll try and do this over the weekend. I'm only familiar with "Round and Round" at the moment :o.

Hmm. The only one I can say that I actually like is Motley Crue. Everything else is cheesy, in my opinion.

Probably a tie between Extreme and Faster Pussycat. Extreme because their lyrical content strayed far away from the cliched hair metal tripe (and they released a pretty good concept album), and Faster Pussycat because they actually had a sense of humor.

Ah, well then that makes things a bit less embarrassing.

I listened to a couple of tracks off it recently and I like what I hear. Haven't heard the album in it's entirety yet but I'm thinking I'll take them over Crue. And if Extreme can be counted (I always thought of them as more funk metal), then they've got to be on my list somewhere too.

Poison is the most successful of the 80's glam/hair metal genre. My personal favorite however is Cinderella. Really tight live band and usually blew away anyone they were playing with. Solid band that continued to evolve and mature as writers/players.

What about Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, or Van Halen?

I don't consider any of them "hair or glam metal". Bon Jovi was always pop/ rock to me. Gn'R are more of a classic sounding hard rock band and Van Halen are not glam or hair in any sense of the word. They are Hard rock/metal. All my opinion mind you and opinion's will vary.

Growing up listening to this stuff in the 80's always caused these kinds of debates among fans. Who's glam who isn't , who's metal who isn't etc etc. By about the mid 80's it got to be that if you had long hair and it was teased you were glam or hair metal. The thing is however that was just the fashion adopted by pretty much all rock bands so everyone got lumped into that category, some justly, some unfairly. Back in 84 if you called Van Halen glam or hair metal you probably would have gotten a shot in the mouth by some die hard VH fan.

Motley, RATT, Poison, Warrant, Slaughter, Winger, Dokken etc. all have a distinct look and more importantly sound to categorize them into the glam or hair metal genre. VH, GnR don't sound anything like any of that lot. One could make a case for Bon Jovi one way or another. That's one reason why Gn'R blew up the way they did. They looked and sounded nothing like all the other LA Bands at the time. They were different. People had begun to tire of the homgenized sound of hard rock metal and wanted something new. Anyway , sorry didn't mean for this to be so lengthy. Unltimately I hate categorizing into all this sub genre stuff, labels suck. It's all music to me.;)

Good post, Axl! GnR and Van Halen might have had some superficial similarities to the pop-metal of the day, but all similarities ended there. I agree that bands should be judged more by their sound, than by their image. Hell, even some alternative rock bands in the 80s dressed like stereotypical "hair" bands. Just take a look at the lead singer for Dramarama. He kinda has a Meat Loaf/Michael Bolton aesthetic going on:
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2MK-ibxlYKw&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2MK-ibxlYKw&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Unfortunately, most bands had to have a "glamorous" image even if their music was pretty grungy or dirty, in order to get played on MTV, the dominant music medium of the time. MTV could make or break a band; in the case of GnR, this virtually happened over night.
