Well that, or you could just look at the note. If it has a black ring around it, it's a regular note and can't be hammered on. If it doesn't have a ring and is kind of glowing then you can HOPO that note.

In GH the regular notes were the colors (Green, red, yellow, blue, orange) with a white dot in the middle with a black ring around it. With the Ho/Po's the notes were pretty much just all of that certain color but the top of it was kind of shiny in a way.
