guitar help

i bought a guitar hero three guitar. i cant get it to work while im playing with someone else who is playing a rock band guitar. any ideas on what i may be doing wrong?

It would help if you told us what system you are on.

If you're using a PS3, the Guitar Hero 3 guitar won't work at all in Rock Band.
