View Full Version : My Review of The Rock Band Tour (after playing at two events in Columbus)

I'll keep it brief since tf5 bassist and Emo Reaper already posted their impressions.

Guitar

Looks just as good in person, if not better than it does in the
videos.
Feels a little flimsy and quite lite. Very slim as well.
Whammy bar is excellent! Better than any GH controller before it.
Tilt sensitivity seemed to be inconsistent, but you can activate
star power by pressing the select button, which is the top of the two
round white buttons. (Flipped since E3, I believe)
The effects switch didn't seem to have that much of an uh... effect.
Maybe I wasn't using it right, i don't know.
The free sections are extremely fun. It's best to use the new
smaller fret buttons during these since you don't have to strum. This
seems to rack up a lot more points.

Main Stage

Bass

The bass in epic is pretty fun to play.
Not to much to say that I haven't already covered on the guitar.

Drums

Never played the drums. Once you get to one of the stations, you
just try to get as many songs in as possible before you have to get
off. The guitar's so fun I didn't really care.
My friend got to play the drums the whole time and said they were
awesome.
He's no drummer so coordinating his hands and feet proved quite
challenging.
He claims the kick pedal is uncomfortable to use for a long period
of time. (this may be because we were crammed in a truck and couldn't
really spread out; he also didn't adjust the drums to his height)
The highest difficulty he played was medium, and he says it was
tough.

Inside the Tour Truck

Vocals

By far the funniest component of Rock Band.
I wasn't man enough to take the mic, but my friend was, and hilarity
ensued(see video)
My friend wasn't that familiar with the game and kept feeling the need to
add his own lyrics, which doesn't help out your score much, lol.

Rock Band Shirt

Check out my profile for some more pics. I took way more, but I'm an idiot that can't work a digital camera, so most of the good ones didn't get saved.

And now, ladies and gentlemen. Without further ado. I give you.... Fred Zeppelin!

That's me on the left in the black Zeppelin Shirt. My friend Matt on the drums. And the amazing vocalist is my friend Justin. We met the guy on the right (playing bass) at the event, can't remember his name.

Part of our band performed again with two other guys, here's the link.

I'm on the right of the screen in that vid, playing bass.

Summary

So to summarize, Rock Band is ****ing amazing. That is all.

Which events did you play at? Cause I was there Saturday and Sunday?

Short and to the point. I nominate your preview as the best preview of all. :P

Ugh, I can't wait for this game. Drums will be fun, I'm still skeptical of the vocals. But it's fun singing with my friends randomly, so I think it'll be fun here.

Thursday outside St. Johns Arena, and Friday at 10th and High St. behind some bars on campus.

We came so close to going on Saturday, but not everyone could get off work early enough.

when you tried out were you given the option of playing all the songs available at the kiosks in the trailer or were there only like 4 or 5 you were allowed to audition with?

Ah, that sucks.

The only songs we could play were

Black Hole Sun
Dead or Alive
Epic
Detroit Rock City

Some random dude they met at the tour. They needed a bassist, he said.

We met him at the event. If you don't have a full band they team you up with other people. He was actually pretty good, he was just trying to show off for the camera.

He's playing bass for our band, in the second vid, too.

Yep.

oh. you should of kicked him in the nuts for doing that stuff. nothings more lame than seeing someone trying to show off, especially when they make it obvious. Your friend singing is f-ing hilarious though.

I was just going to say that. I love when he screams in the drummer's ear in the second video, the guy looks so pissed off! lol.

Your singer is awesome! That 2nd video is the most hilarious tour video I've seen yet. I love how he just sings whatever the hell he wants! Kudos I say.

Your friend Justin on vocals is amazing! HAHA. So good its way better to have someone like that than someone who just sits there and doesn't get into it at all.

Nice pictures too, thanks for posting your impressions, and putting up the photos, it looks like tons of fun.

Each new person that goes to these things makes me more and more excited for when I finally get to go!

Question I don't think I've seen answered yet.. when everyone says that the guitar feels a bit lightweight.. does that mean it's lighter than the previous GH gats, or about the same weight, but you'd expect it to be heavier given the strat's size?

Well considering they don't have anything other than the GH guitars to compare it to that would make them lighter.

Christ, did your friend have to sing directly into the mic? He couldn't have put the mic a few inches away from his mouth? I WAS WEARING HEAD PHONES! Ow....

I also was at the one at st john's on thursday and the one on south campus gateway on friday. When we say the guitars are light we mean really light like they feel like almost nothing is on your shoulder. The guy was probably trying to show off cause before you get on stage the guy told you to show off have fun its about stage appearance and not your score.

also the only time the switch on the guitar really was different was during solos to the point that i had to turn it off cause it was my favorite songs and the effect was ruining it for me, but you can also hear in detroit rock city that the original poster posted the waa waa at the end of phrases. Other than not much difference with on or off.

oh in case anyone wanted to see another video of people playing heres my crappy one. lol
Im unfortunely singing even though i suck at since the guy who could sing(playing drums) was sick and had no voice.

http://video.rockband.com/events/mtv_rockband/highlights/viewvid.asp?v=1070509

also I didnt get a t-shirt cause they ran out the only i got was drum sticks...

and no my voice isnt naturally that high I just cant sing an octave lower so I try to match the same pitch lol probably why i could only sing dead or alive, detroit rock city, and tom sawyer

Well considering they don't have anything other than the GH guitars to compare it to that would make them lighter.

Or it could make them the same weight, but with an expectation that they'd be heavier since the new guitars are supposedly slightly larger than the GH guitars...

Y'know, like I mentioned in my original question. But thanks for your investigative journalism, anyway.

Lol. Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'll be sure to pass along everyone's comments to Justin. He'll be glad you enjoyed his performance. :D

No problem.

Actually this might be the case. If I had to guess, I would still say that the Strat weighs noticeably less than explorer. But maybe it's the fact that the weight is spread out over a larger distance. I don't know.

Sounds like someone needs to bring a scale with them to the tour events.
