There was orriginally going to be DLC offered that have cencored lyrics and then ones that do not so that not everyone is forced to listen to "family friendly" songs.

What ever happened to this idea?

Did HMX confirm this? I don't remember that.

Same here. I don't think they explicitly announced that they WOULD do that, although they might have mentioned something about the possibility of doing it.

He's making things up I think! Especially the words:

Happend
Cencored
Uncencored
Trakcs
Orriginally

That was only an idea brought up by someone on the boards.

To my knowledge that was never something we had planned. Our rating for the game is T and my understanding is that our DLC will also reflect that rating.

Also - we don't punish you for swearing in the game if you feel so inclined. Often times I sing the album lyrics to Creep instead of the radio lyrics that are in game. If you know them and feel comfortable singing it in mixed company go for it.

Thanks for letting us know Harmonix's current stance on this, Sean.

Just FYI, last year Alex gave an interview in which he said that his understanding was that individual pieces of DLC could be rated separately from the main game, and that he would prefer to avoid "radio edits". I think that is what the original poster is referring to, and it's been a source of confusion for me as well.

Do I understand correctly that if a label offered to distribute M-rated content that was otherwise desirable, Harmonix would require edits before it could be made available as DLC?

Looking closer, I can see how Harmonix's position has evolved on this.

There are several writeups on the OXM Podcast interview where Alex stated that he wanted to avoid radio edits. I listened to that Podcast myself, and can confirm that is what he said. One writeup is here:

http://kotaku.com/gaming/cocks-out/guitar-hero-x+plorer-will-work-with-rock-band-360-usb-hub-packed-in-297770.php

More recently, however, this is what Alex said to MTV Multiplayer:

“By and large we’ve tended toward using radio edits,” Rigopulos told me. “The ESRB is not, to my knowledge, as sensitive to language in M ratings. The use of radio edits on our part has been our decision, rather than an ESRB one.”

The bad news here is that it sounds like Harmonix, rather than the artist, is driving the decision to use radio edits.

The good news is that Alex indicates that dropping an occasional expletive will not automatically bump DLC to an 'M' rating, which may make Harmonix more open to releasing it.

Seems to make sense. If certain words bumped DLC to an M rating and it prevents certain people from being able to download it. I can see how HMX would lose money. Also it might be too expensive to make 2 versions of the same song? Since combined they will sell about the same as a single version.

However, there would be very little cost associated with doing so, since charts and everything else would already be made and the same.

I'm very disappointed that HMX has changed their view so dramatically on this. I can't in good faith use the word "evolved" for a complete flip-flop.

I understand that you would like to keep the DLC consistent with the game rating, but there should be an option for those that want the original version of the songs, the way they were intended to be heard by the artists. And while there isn't a punishment for singing lyrics that have been removed, it can certainly throw off the singer when they are expecting a word, and it is not there. It happened to me this afternoon on Zero."...Uhhhh...ermm Fakers!"

Personally, I am in favor of choosing uncensored or edited when selecting a song, but if I have to have two copies of the songs, then I am okay with that too.

Can't be ESRB... Sorry.. There are a lot of games with lots of swearing and only get a T rating.

I'm disappointed at all of these radio edits. As for singing the actual album edits of some of the songs, they don't work for all the songs. Welcome Home is a really good example becasue the 2 words changed for instance are a bit longer and a bit different sounding, which makes a person have slightly change the inflection of the words (which while not impossible, is a pain).

SO LEMME GET THIS STRAIGHT....

The lyrics "My name is lucifer, please take my hand" = otay
The lyrics "God damn" = not otay

The lyrics "the ritual has begun Satan's work is done" = good beer
The lyrics "God damn" = bad beer

If you're going to censor, fine. But don't make hypocrites out of yourself; show some consistency :D
