View Full Version : DLC Interface

If Harmonix is going to release new DLC very frequently, I don't think the Xbox Marketplace is a good place to browse them. I think that there should be a built in interface in Rock Band that allows you to browse the current DLC, and arrange them by artist, song, album name.

DLC has to be purchased through the marketplace.

I'm not saying it won't be.
I'm saying if they put in a built in browser for the DLC.
It can still bring up the slide pop-up that asks you if you want to purchase the selected item.

Or Playstation Store if you own a Playstation3

DLC has to be purchased through the marketplace.
If MS does force them to use the standard interface, they better update it. HMX announced you could download individual tracks off albums. That means at release we'd already have 12 items (pic pack, theme, Who's Next album, and 9 individual songs) and this would keep growing. They'd basically need each album to have its own category, which allowed you to download the whole album, or individual songs, and hopefully to drop the price of the full album by how much you've spent on individual songs already. Otherwise the DLC concept got a lot less exciting and a lot more bloated.

I was wondering what they would do about this as well. There definitely needs to be better organization in the structure with everything on the marketplace but especially when RB comes out with all these songs and other goodies.
That would be awesome if Rock Band had its own blade! lol jk... but it would be cool!

It should look exactly the same as the PSN store

I'm Sure HMX has a good system for dealing with a large amount of DLC.

I assume there must be some section or something that is going to be devoted for Rock Band. Admittedly I have not used the store yet, as I only recently got a 360. I would think though, with the sheer volume of DLC for this one game, it would be well organized in some way so people who are getting this music each week can do it easily, and also see music from previous weeks.

The XBL marketplace GUI is totally inadequate for games that have a lot of content downloads. IMHO they will have to do something custom, especially if they want to accomodate different bundling options, cherry-picking of specific songs, etc.
They probably want to have a very uniform GUI appearance across all of their platforms, which would require something custom.

Has any 360 game implemented a custom UI for DLC before? There may be some obvious answers, but I can't think of any at the moment.

I remember this question being asked a while ago, and I answered then what I will answer now: custom, in-game. Make it like Singstore, the DLC-browser for SingStar.

of course, the rock and indie sections would be overpopulated, the pop-section would have a few songs, but the rest will be reading zero, so you'll have to change the sections a bit (aka 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s), but you get the general idea.
And here's the actual song-browsing.

I think it would be good if they had something like this:
-You select to go "buy DLC"
-Then a lrecently added page shows up....From there you can list alphabetically, by genre, by decade, etc.
-Then you can select your song using any of the menus.
-There you may be able to listen to a preview, or see a preview, whatever's allowed.
-Say you want the song. Then you would select "buy song" and the Marketplace/PSN Store comes up, letting you confirm your selection, etc.
-Close the blade, and you are back in the game.
If they could get that type of setup, then things could work.

That's exactly the kind of interface I was thinking of.

Maybe it'll be as cumbersome and clunky as a cell phone ring tone service? *crosses fingers*

I think MS might require them to list it in the marketplace interface... however I don't think that means they can't also add a nice organized in-game browser... which would make sense for cross-platform use.
For example, the XBL Arcade titles usually have an in-game option to purchase the full version, which when selected takes you out to the "confirm download" tab. This would work perfectly for Rock Band.
Actually I'll be very surprised if it doesn't work this way.
