Now before you flame me and say that this is just sarcastic RB DLC hating, DON'T! I'm not flaming anything, I'm pointing out (quite objectively I might add) that the marketing team at HMX is really good at what they do.... Now continue reading...

Basically I'm amazed at the genius behind the HMX marketers (unless this was a coincidence, but I doubt it) They've anticipated the success of GTA 4 and have released content that is less mainstream, more of a niche genre and less popular during the time that they expect people will be busyily finishing GTA 4. This is an AMAZINGLY apt marketing strategy. Let me explain:

Harmonix wants to move HARDWARE; I'm sure they make a minute profit from DLC, but the more people that buy the hardware, the more potential DLC purchases they'll have! Now to do this they must release content that appeals to EVERYBODY including all musical minorities and sub-genres... if they don't, if they simply rely on majority support, they may please the majority, but the other people will be uninterested and they risk the game being branded as GENRE-BIASED (as some *cough*whinners*cough* have already claimed it to be)... now they have cleverly used the time that the main gamer audience has redirected towards a new title to release some of this niche music to appeal to other-genre fans while giving other people a couple weeks to get tired of GTA 4...

Now if they were as smart as I say they are, they'll estimate when people are getting bored and release an album or something to help people rediscover RB... BINGO! You've got fervently renewed support and interest in the game which equals more revenue!

I must admit as a hardcore gamer is is nice to be able to take a break from a game for a while and then come back to it with renewed interest... I mean RB is GREAT, but I don't want to be locked into it constantly. I haven't picked up my RB controllers for a couple weeks now and I'm looking forward to whatever HMX announces next (Cars please? :D) Most gamers realize tha a game like GTA 4 is a temporary experience... you play through the campaign, you play online with friends for a while, you shoot up a hospital or a subway station or two to work off some stress and then you get slowly more bored with it... Rock Band however is always upgrading and getting more exciting depending on the content that is released.

I don't look at Rock Band as just another video game anymore than I think of my television as a just another passing fad in electronics... Rock Band is the game that I can keep coming back to when I get bored with my "new and exciting games"... Like my television is something I can fall back on when I've got nothing better to do...which is more than 5 hours a day! :D Thanks for this game HMX! Rock Band has more in common with my Xbox 360 itself than it does with any of the games I have for it. It really is a platform of entertainment.

I figured you were going to discuss the South Park DVD tie-in, Distrubed tie-in or McDonald's tie-in. Those all seem like really good marketing strategies. Though I'm willing to bet Disturbed will profit more from their tie-in than HMX does.

because you not liking it makes it a niche genre?

FOB is about as niche as say, Justin Timberlake.

I guess if niche is defined as crazy huge, you win.

they have made some good choices, and they even listen to us. I know i kept hearing blink 182 requests, and then we got them. same thing with paramore. and when they released the HMX pack and people were complaining, they released something really good to get people to come back to them.

and by the way, i love your sig OP. I've been here since july, but when the new site came up, i had login problems.

I think your 100% right; and I can't wait for GH:Aerosmith to come out to see how HMX combats it:)

I do like the approach that HMX has been taking towards promotion. None of this just getting lots of advertising lark but actually getting the music to you. As for GTAIV, i definitely think the mother hips set was a response to that and probably a good idea too.

As for senior members, that always seemed like a ridiculous tag to attach to people, it suggests that somebody's somehow useful or not to the community which really can't be judged by post count
