View Full Version : If there were a $250.00 real drum mod, would you buy it?

Just trying to get a feel with this poll as to what someone would spend. I know everyone has seen the real set that was modded to work with Rock Band. That set was crazy as it had a monitor for the drummer on the kit and everything.
There may be something in the works that would be in the $250.00 range. So would you buy it? I am talking about a real kit with mesh heads that can be replaced. If done right even if you hit the rim it would count a note instead of breaking your combo. Talking about something that feels like a real kit and no need to worry about cracking or RMA's again.
Let me toss my hat in now and say I would buy it. Since this is a game I am going to play for years to come, I want it to be the best it can be! I am tired of RMA's, tired of not scoring higher on songs when I know I did not miss a note. Just the peace of mind that it would bring. I have already spend more than $600.00 on this one game alone so what is another $250.00!
Ok tell me what you think

I'd definitely consider it, I've already blown tons of money into Rock Band, a reliable set would be good to have >.>

I've played a roland set with mesh heads (an earlier version of this set (http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.aspx?ObjectId=925&pid=hpfp)) and I would definitely pay 250 for a set of mesh heads with a couple of cymbals. I personally prefer the mesh heads over actual drum heads.
The set up of the current set is also distracting, I can't change where each particular head is. Yes, that's just a personal nit pick, but it would be nice to have a set that is more adjustable.

i can safely say that the microphone is the only thing i have yet to be replaced. 3 drum sets (2 not even played, had since christmas) one i currently have was shipped broken (cracked on each side of the control pad) 2 guitars... still waiting on that... (5 weeks now) apparently ea likes putting wrong lables on box's and shipping the box's directly to the repair shop...
I would love to have a set not made of plastic... same with a guitar...

I would for sure, I have never had as much fun in a game as I have playing drums in RB. As a drum noob though, what are mesh heads?

$250 is a little bit much to pay for a game peripheral. It would have to fix all the problems that the Rock Band set has. Also it has to be build to last, unlike the RB set. Also it would be nice it was also able to function as a cheap electronic drumset. If it did, then that would justify the $250 price range!

I'd buy it ONLY if it worked outside the game as well... otherwise I will continue to have 250 dollars in my pocket
if not... I'd buy a real drum kit and learn from there. I climbed up from easy to expert pretty quickly and already play an instrument. How hard can it be, right?
(Okay, I'll probably get some lessons for the basics, but still, you get the point)

Take it from a 30 year plus vet. This game is great but there is alot more to drumming than this game! I mean the proper way of learning, Rudiments, Wrist control all of this. So if you are serious take some lessons and be as great as I know you can be!:D

I would be interested in the kit, but I would also be more interested in a MIDI to USB/Rock Band converter for existing Electronic Drum sets. I have a Roland TD-6 set and would prefer to be able to use that through the use of a converter, in Rock Band. I don't know all that would be involved, but I'd be willing to pay upwards of $100 for the converter.

I own a Roland TD6 with mesh heads and a double kick
I bought at guitar Center about 6 months ago. If you
could set the triggers to something like this it would
be OK I guess. Cost around $1800. I love this set have played
drums 25 years and I seem to have trouble with the rockband
thing. Seems too slow on the rolls maybe and I seem to over
play. The game should get you started though,in other
words GET REAL!!! You can run all of your music through the module and play with headphones 24/7. DLC?? Nevermore Metal Church Ozzy(Crazy Train)

Dude, I can't believe you mentioned Metal Church. I was just listening to their first album. Now that's a tight drummer! I've been playing for 25 years as well, but never had an electronic kit. But if I was to buy one, Roland would be my first choice to check out for sure. Right on, I like your taste of music.:)

if it were a real drum set that I could remove the rock band bits and use it as a real drum set and then put the rockband bits back on and use it for that (without it sounding like a full drum kit since I want to listen to the song's drums not my drums) and so on and so forth then maybe.

Put me down for having to see a review.
I wouldn't want something completely like a real set though, they're a bit too big and bulky for my liking.
But something more compact, like the Rock Band set, but durable, quieter, and definitely more reliable... would be well worth the purchase.
It's a strange situation, there are plenty of options for guitars, you've got strum mod fixes, red octane compatibility on the 360 and ps2, the tac converter for ps2 controller compatibility on the ps3, other manufacturer's controllers. What's weird though is that drumming is the new thing, a lot of us have had our guitar hero fix and have exploded all over the drums instead, but about all you can get in the way of mods is rubber covers and pedals.
There's a huge market here for new drum controllers. Someone who knows what they're doing and could put together quality sets could make a lot of money.

I probably would, but... I am beginning to wonder if it is worth it for RB.
I've got two stock RB kits (both work perfectly). The only mods I currently use are replacement pedals (all-metal e-kit hi-hat pedals) and some pennies in one. I recently removed my foam pads.
I have an e-kit and an acoustic kit. I went so far as to wire my e-kit to the 360 drum controller, but found it to NOT be as fun as the stock RB kit.
I am beginning to think RB is meant to be played only with the stock controller pads.

I'd buy it if the shipping to the UK was not too steep. I do think that some kind of adapter to make a real kit work might be another option though.

I'd rather take the approach of making it myself. Actually, due to another topic on these very boards, a friend of mine and I are going to give it a whirl. It seems easy enough to make, assuming you have skills with wood crafting and some minor electronics ability (say, the ability to solder).

For a 100% working kit, that I didn't have to mod AND had the reliability of my TD-9 - ABSOLUTELY.
I love playing on my 'real' kit, and I love playing RB - what makes RB a frustrating experience is missed notes, bad rolls, etc when I know it's the kit just messing up from time to time. I can't tell you how many streaks I've broken on straight line hi-hat runs after nailing the hard roll section, just because the kit decided, right then, to not register a note for whatever reason.

I'm not convinced that ION and "good kit" go hand in hand. Their history suggests otherwise.
Still, I'd love to be wrong. I don't care WHO makes it, I just want it to work properly.

I just wish someone would make an off the shelf MIDI converter, so I could connect the "MIDI out" port on my Alesis drum module for my existing electronic kit to my PS3 and have it work with Rock Band. For me at least, that would be the ultimate solution.
i have a REAL 1500dollar drum kit i invested a lot into so i wouldnt buy a plastic 250dollar one but it would be good for the game and help out people who live in apartments or have old neighbors that like to complain like i once did so i'm for it for the kids

I wish someone could cheaply produce that hack circuit board that allows you to play Rock Band with a Roland kit. I'd love to hook my TD-10 kit up and play Rock Band on that. That should be do-able for less than $100.

Put me down for a maybe. I have a few questions though:
- Would this kit be quiet like a modded stock RB kit, or just as loud or louder as the stock kit?
- Would the kit include a high quality pedal like the Omega Pedal or would this be an additional cost?
- Would the kit include separate cymbals or would it be arranged together like the RB kit? I'm not a drummer, but it would be cool for a more realistic "simulation" if the cymbals were high and separate like a real drum kit.

No, I Built my own for $160.00 that doesn't include the drum controller and for now I'm still using the Rock Band Pedal. The best thing about this set up. If it breaks you can fix it yourself.
Edit: One more thing. I can also connect this drum kit to a real Roland drum module.

I like the concept but I would have to see it. I've got all the mods and my drumming has really improved. I'm getting 100's now so I'm pretty happy. I think what would make me switch is a really full bad ass kit. Other than that I'll still play what I have.

I have already spend more than $600.00 on this one game alone so what is another $250.00!
How outdated is that? It seems like I've seen you review twice that much. And have you not bought actual guitar straps, drum sticks, a 3-guitar stand, stickers... these little things add up. I'm in the process of making one of Mikejl46's homemade sets http://edrums.info/rock_band.htm , and I'm having to contract out the wood part, so I'm going to be in for more than $250. The wood will be stained to match my entertainment center and den furniture, so my wife will be able to live with it sitting there moreso than a real drum kit. This mod is the perfect solution to all of my problems... but absent that, I'd pay $500 or more for a quality set

Out of curiosity, would the cost of the woodwork go down any if you were having the guy cut out multiple sets? I figure that it's possible, I know woodworking but don't have access to tools. The cost per set might go down a surprising amount if he can use jigs to speed up production. It's not worth it to make a jig for a couple of pieces, but ten or twenty is another matter entirely.
If the price is reasonable there are probably quite a few people who would be interested in buying a set of all the pre-cut wooden pieces they need. Anybody with me on this thought?

I'm not real comfotable having my woodworker cut a bunch of sets for different people when the guy who was nice enough to show us how to do it isn't profitting from showing us his idea. Plus, the guy doing it isn't really excited about it... he's giving me friend prices... and I think to do multiples, he'd have to jack it up.

This $169.95 Mini Drum Kit (http://www.vintagedrum.com/item/TKO-5-Piece-Complete-Junior-Childrens-Kids-Starter-Drum-Set-Wine-Red) would work great for Rock Band. I'm thinking about turning one of these into a Rock Band drum kit some day.

Yea I suppose so, I think if I do decide to mod a real kit. I might just use a regular size one so I can use it for both purposes.

All we need is for HMX to come out with a midi device for the PS3 and 360. If that happend I could use my Electric kit and all my issues would be solved!
I think it would be cool also if you could use sounds from the drum brain so that the drums would sound different during fill sections.

tell ya what i've always enjoyed the guitar hero series and rockband, especially since i play guitar...but i've had more fun learning to play rockband drums than i have playing game-guitar licks as of recent...and thats prolly why i've spent so much money modding my current drumset.
even though i've gotten a ton of mods already for my rockband drumset i'd still buy another one if it was more realistic/reliable...same thing for the guitar (pretty sure bytearts is coming out with a wooden/custom guitar controller).

$250 is a lot of money but it could be worth it. Real electric kits can be so much more.
Of course it would be great if it was set up to be hooked up to a real drum controller. Then it would be a deal.

$250 is a bit much for a video game... I'd honestly rather put $250 towards a real kit (because I'm interested in playing the drums anyhow).
Unless it was an electronic kit that could also be used with Rock Band...
