My damn xbox started freezing on me while playing games, now it freezes on boot up. I looked on the xbox forums and this happens just before the ring of death. I've only had it for like 3 months...grrr

It's nice that MS will pay for it to be fixed but why not put out a product that works? ugh

Wow, there seems to be alot of people that have problems with it... Mine is a 1st generation one (one of the first ones, when they came out, had it since they came out) and I havn't had ANY problems with it. I guess it's just a matter of time. :(

My time came last week. I had a first gen that passed away. Sometime after next week I should have a new one. The three red lights of death are a *****, cuz unless you got some other system to keep you busy, you go through withdrawls...trust me on this.

Where is your 360? and please god don't tell me you have it "vertical" Because that's a horrible way to put the 360. Can't really confirm it but I modded the first Nyko fan and hooked it to an external power supply and i've noticed a HUGE difference in heat. Doesn't even feel like i've turned my 360 on after i've been playing hours. Best thing to do is make sure it has a lot of space (don't cram games or stack things near it) and make sure you have some kind of fan blowing the heat away. I wouldn't suggest a nyko fan unless you wired it to work with an external power source.

Basically all I know so far is I've had my 360 longer than my friend, mine is horizontal and his is vertical. I have mine in an open space a good 2 feet above the ground. He has games/movies crammed on the side of his. That's not good for the system at all (EDIT: Forgot to mention, he had to send his 360 back a few days ago because it got the RROD, Mines just fine.), the main problem with the 360 is M$ rushed to get it out and didn't think about what they were doing. The system NEEDS air, and if it doesn't get enough air it'll eventually crap out. Something about the inside messes or w,e. And that's where the towel trick comes into play. The towel heats the insides up and after it cools down everything is back to normal (this can mess your system up even more though) Bottom line, get a fan for the 360 and keep it cool.

If that doesn't work for you or solve your problems, it could just be the system itself. Then you'd have to call xbox support and holy hell from what i've seen it's not good =\ I wish you luck man.

no mine was horizointal in a shelf with a fair amount of space all around. Nothing touching it, since it startred ive tried putting it in the open air all around in vertical, no difference...guess ill have to wait, glad RB isn't out for a bit.

ARG I just went to check the machine, and it now has the ring of death...well lets hope its a fast turnaround on th exbox repair

I had no problem with the tech support. The guy was nice and took care of my issue quickly.

Ah, I've seen a few videos of where the Tech people were complete dicks to the person calling. Even my friend's 360 that overheated the chick talking to him was a complete douche. Anyways, do you have a fan? If not then get one of those. If you have fan it's more than likely a problem with the system and not an overheating issue or anything caused by overheated. The overheating part happens to a majority of the consoles that redlight though.

I have a notebook cooler I had it sitting on for a while, but seriously, I shouldnt have to cool it off by extra means. Microsoft's system needs to cool itself, which I think they finally fixed...I think...its just annoying that the whole thing happend (the whole epidemic). You know what I mean??? If my next one goes I am calling Microsoft and I am going to demand a full refund.

Yeah, they really should of waited and put heatsinks in the systems before releasing. The main problem with the PS3 and 360 (Believe me, just for anyone think it doesn't. The PS3 overheats just as much as the 360) Anyways, the biggest problem is the casing for the system. You're packing all this high end cards and **** into a tiny box, no wonder it's overheating. I mean look at your computer (If you have a gaming computer) If it was the size of a 360 or PS3 it'd be screwed. You can't expect something to run properly when it's boiling to death. Another thing is people have to realize these aren't PS2s,Gamecubes,Xboxs we're dealing with.

They need to have air, and NO you don't want air blowing back into the system (yes some people thinks blowing cold air in helps) You want to get a fan that'll blow all that hot air out. In some cases you just got unlucky and ended up with a ****ty system, so overheating isn't your problem. Something went wrong when making that system. That's a pretty rare occasion too. As for fixing the 360 yeah, if you send in one now that has overheated they'll add in a heatsink, you might want to check the system -videos on youtube- to make sure they did and if they didn't. CALL THEM BACK. That's about all they did though, and so far it has helped a ton of the systems.

Also... Not saying anyone here does but I have seen videos. If you put your PS3/360 on the carpet. Please, please go outside with any sort of firing arm and just shoot the system to hell.

Yeah, after looking at the internals, I'm still not totally satisfied with the way the cooling is set up (I'm a computer engineer, btw). Basically the heat sinks are setup perpendicular (side to side) to the direction air should be flowing (front to back). Two problems: the fans are on the back, and there are no holes on the front. So, there's hardly any airflow, and any that you do have doesn't travel through the heat sinks properly.

My suggestion is to rig up some form of power supply and get some cheap computer fans from newegg. Put some on each side so you get a cross-console airflow. This should fix and problems you would otherwise have.

PS: sucks about the failure. Hope you have one of the good experiences, and not the return from hell (like UPS losing your box).

^ Def do what bakkster said, Either that or my Nyko fan solution. I can grab some pics for you if you want. It works extremely well, last night I cut my system on for 3 hours. Forgot to turn on my extra fans and the system in the back and on the top was BLAZING hot. The other day I played Jordan all day (finally beat it) and I turned off my system, touched it. Was like it never turned on.

And to reiterate: put the Nyko fan on its own power supply. Otherwise you increase the current draw and haven't done yourself any good (as well as low voltage on the system is rumored to cause RRoD).

We should start a thread about the 360 overheating solutions and tech-talk. That would be fun.

The Nyko Fan, I left the part open where the power supply is so cooler air could get in:

The Power Supply, It's 12V and the casing looks really bad. But it works great and doesn't burn the fans ( I still suggest getting a lower volt powersupply if you can):

And this is how it looks on the 360:

Works extremely well and won't harm your system. (Just make sure if you do something similar to cut the fans off before you cut off the system. Vice versa when turning on.)

And yes, I realize my bottom shelf was dusty at the time. It's not now :p

I saw the towel trick mentioned in this thread so I thought I'd chime in and say what a catagorically bad idea it is. Something on the level of cleaning your toaster by giving it a bath.

While the technique may give some temporary relief in some circumstances, it can also cause serious damage, AND it's a fire hazard to boot.

If you get to the point where you're considering this, you're better off just utilizing the 3 year warranty.

Yeah, I mentioned it in my post. It's a horrible idea and it WILL harm the system's "inside".

My old 360 broke down about a month ago. Worst time it could possibly happen, I know. I decided not to bother with the circus that is customer service, and instead opted to upgrade to a 360 Elite instead. Expensive, yes, but ultimately worth it, I think.

Again, I have had mine for almost 2 years and I have yet to have problems with it. I do have it standing up vertically with about 4 feet of room and plenty more in the back. Once again, I think it's just a matter of time.

Actually that's good enough space for the thing to breathe. It really is an overheating problem and not just a matter of "time". most of the people that have it vertical have it in a closed area or stuff stacked beside it.
