View Full Version : Incorrect Lyrics?

So I was flipping through the latest issue of Game Informer, and in the previews section was a little blurb about Rock Band. There were some new screenshots that I hadn't seen before, and one of them was of Reptilia. The lyrics scrolling across the top of the screen read as follows:
"please don't slow me down only if I'm going too fast"
I'm a pretty big Strokes fan, and I know that the word "only" is definitely not part of that verse. Does this mean that I'm going to have to sing incorrect lyrics in order to keep my combo running? This would totally be not rock, and I hope all the lyrics are quadruple-checked before launch.

I don't care what the 'official' lyrics are to In Bloom, there is no way Kurt Cobain is singing 'Knows not what it means' he definitely sings 'Don't know what it means'.

Yes, the lyrics should be checked thoroughly.

Yea, in the studio version and every live version of the song I've heard Kurt sings 'Don't Know what it means'. Check some out on youtube.

I doubt any of the songs will be sent out with incorrect lyrics, that would be terrible, and I don't think a game based so heavily on knowing the lyrics to a song would make that mistake.
If you listen hard to "In Bloom" you will hear him sing "But he knows not what it means" Although I will admit sometimes it does sound like Don't Know what it means. In all honesty I actually think its "don't know what it means" and then he repeats with "knows not what it means."

it's definitely "Knows Not what it Means" it switches off between "don't know what it means" and "Knows not what it means," but there's definitely "Knows not what it means" in the song
here's like, 10 seconds of it.

Actually, Kurt goes back and forth between "... Knows not what it means..." and "... Don't know what it means...". Trust me on this...

I believe the guys who have access to the master tapes. I figure if you can listen to the track with just the vocals, you probably know what they're singing.

He says 'dont know what it means' two times throughout the song. The rest are all knows not.
Any Nirvana lyrics debates can usually be settled on the NFC....

Hey - He's the one
Who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means
Don't know what it means, when I say:
He's the one
Who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means
Knows not what it means when I say aahh ...
We can have some more -- nature is a whore
Bruises on the fruit -- tender age in bloom
Hey - He's the one
Who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means
Don't know what it means, when I say
He's the one

Knows not what it means when I say aahh ...

And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means
Knows not what it mean's when I say:
He's the one
Who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means
Knows not what it means (x2)
Knows not what it means when I say aahh ...

I know I'm coming in late to this discussion, but I really don't think it is possible to fudge up the lyrics to anything between QA testing and access to master tapes and the fact that the staff has a musician background. :)

Wow, totally wacky and good question. I even hopped on YouTube and tracked down some live performances. Not once could I find an instance where he said 'only'. I hope they fix that before the game comes out, and hopefully it doesn't happen to any other songs. Mistakes happen, but my fingers are crossed. Would suck to have to change lyrics for a typo's sake.

Typically all lyrics are represented in game as they were submitted to us. There are exceptions, but usually it's placed as it was written, which can sometimes vary slightly from how it's actually performed.

Huh. So how will we be required to sing it in regards to score and combo? Will we have the option to do it either way, like when there's a naughty word? Or are we required to sing the lyric, even if the actual performance omits it?

Personally, I just sing it as I know it, and seem to do just fine. (You GOTTA sing the "F bombs" that get edited out, on principle alone!!)

You probably will but there won't be much songs that say "naughty" words or else the rating might have been changed (surprisingly). As to In Bloom, the first time he says it (didn't pay attention after) he says "Knows not what it means, Don't know what it means when I say" so yes that is correct.

QFT and I'm glad they were left blank so people have to option to sing that lyric any way they want, I think that was a great idea.

So the lyrics in the game typically represent the original written lyrics and sometimes not the lyrics actually being sung in the song? Wouldn't it be a good idea to alter them to jive perfectly with what's being sung? I imagine the game interprets performance solely on the sounds, and having original lyrics scrolling on the top that aren't necessarily accurate to the finalized, sung lyrics that one would be singing seems like a mess. Wouldn't that just confuse people who haven't heard the song before? Singing along to the scrolling text while the actual vocals don't even match the text at times?

I would imagine that if it was being done that way, the lyrics would match the master track or they would match the singing for the cover with the words written.

I know what you mean by vary slightly (as in rude material and cursing) but I think you guys are losing focus on the fact that the artists performed the lyrics the way they are, and that is how they should be represented. On the other hand, I'm not quite sure, but including that "rude material" could (which is ridiculous if true) bump you guys up to a M rating, which can be brutal for a family game. All I truly want is the ability to have a censor or something, just some way you can do the original and the edit with a toggle in options or something, so you guys can still keep the T rating (maybe) but not kinda ruin the songs. Also being able to choose the type of DLC (original or edited) would be a huge plus for me.

So Anarkeith, in the Strokes song that I mentioned in the original post, is the word "only" really in the song, or was this a mistake that was present in that particular build?
If the word is really in the song, it'll screw me up pretty badly.

Regarding 'Reptilia'...it should be noted that there's a difference between the master tracks as they were first recorded and the mix of those tracks that ultimately made it onto the released album. "Only" was indeed on the vocal master track. In the song, you just have to listen closely; it's merely buried under other instruments.

I guess I'll have to turn the other instruments down when I pick the game up to see if I can hear it.
I'm just not hearing a window of time for it. I'm hearing "I said please don't slow me down... if I'm going too fast" for the first instance, and "I said please don't slow me down... (audible inhale) if I'm going too fast..." during the second instance.
Might have been trimmed from the actual released mix?

I can't hear the only either. I actually hear him inhale fairly loud where the only should be, so I don't understand how it's buried. The line doesn't even seem to make sense with the only in it.
