Now that I have your attention I just want to say how sick I am of seeing this:
(Poster) - "Does anyone mind answering a few questions?"
(Poster who thinks he's special because he has over 200 posts) - "WTF!?, Read the NooB Guide, you're questions have already been answered...NOOB!"
First of all, it's great that Xzyliac took the time to write it. When I first came to these forums, I checked the guide for a answer to my question. I did'nt find one. The thing is, it struck me that if someone took that time to write such a guide, that tells me that if I want to avoid the utter shame of being called a Noob, I damn well better read through 50 pages of half info, half ranting....although very funny at times.
The thing is, it takes less time to post a small question you may have than reading through the ten commandments. Who really cares if it's been asked a hundred times? Forums are supposed to be about a community all interested in the same thing.
To me, the right thing to do would be to welcome the new guy, answer their questions..again...big deal...and POLITELY suggest that the next time he should refer to the Guide. Noone really gives a flyin **** that it's been talked about before. They are just as excited as you are about Rock Band. They find these forums, come in with a smile looking for advice from others who they assume will greet a fellow rocker with open arms, only to get slapped in the face with a Guide and a rude comment.
I have actually seen someone write a LONGER post being rude to someone than it would have taken to answer them..again. All I'm saying is...Lighten up people. We're all here for the same end result. "Can't we all just get along?"

you're a n00b for making this thread. Read the n00b guide to see why.

Edit: Be aware that we are responding to the poster's inflammatory thread title, which has since been changed, either by himself or a mod.

Now that you've changed the topic title, it makes sense. Don't post something with 'OMG NEW INFO LOOK HERE' and expect people to not call you a n00b

As rude as people can be sometimes, you really owe it to yourself just to look at the first 3 pages of the forum or use the Search feature.

Great going on proving his point guys! Uber w00t to you!!!
But seriously I have noticed it too and said "Everyone chill" more times than I care to even count. I think that the n00bs deserve some respect.
As for the long ass guide it is long. But really it's just going to be that way. It's just a hell of a lot of info to cover and even still it doesn't cover everything. The ranting part was really my own satire and frustrations. I tried my best not to offend.
Most of the questions asked lately are either really justifiable or would've been like three days ago. I can't see any real reason to freak out on any n00b. Or anyone for that matter.
Since I wrote the guide I guess I personally feel kind of responsible to defend them but in the long run I have to agree with the original poster. I have noticed more than a few ******* post.
That said sometimes it is just laziness or ignorance. But not all the time 100%. I mean everyone says "Read the guide" like automatically. A lot of the recent questions the guide doesn't even answer.
Now let's lock this. I don't know if it's really necessary.

If the person completely fails to search the answers (especially after it's been answered god knows how many times) Then maybe I'll say something in the sense of "You new commers really need to read/search before posting" Quoted from one of my previous posts. And I'm sticking to that, If you don't take the time to search and just ask the question that's just showing how lazy you are. Now if someone actually did search and it was a topic that really hasn't been talked about say "character customization" and they didn't find it, completely understandable.
Oh, and even if it isn't someones first time I imagine they can read. And if not they wouldn't even be at the forums. All in all, I see no reason to be a complete jerk and say something along the lines like "You freaking idiots need to search." No reason for being a dick to someone you don't know.

The RB forums are the first game-related forums I've ever signed up for (on a side note, I never got an email confirmation, so I don't have a profile, but it still lets me make posts).
Anyway, I agree with the original poster. Sure, it doesn't take much work to search through forums, but you can't really expect someone to look through 20 pages of threads, and even if they use the search feature, its not a guarantee that they'll get the right results. Maybe they can't spell, or maybe the people who made the old threads can't spell. Add to that people making threads that have misleading or uninformative titles, and you see the problem.
Why then, is it such a crime to post your question, if you at least made some small effort to see if it was asked before. Not all of us check the forums every 5 minutes, so its possible a thread started yesterday can be back on page 3 or 4 in a few days, and will go unnoticed by the occasional visitor.
Some people act like hosting space is a scarce resource, and precious bytes can't be spared on repeat questions. Others can spend hours hitting refresh to check for new posts on their favorite threads, but can't be bothered to spend 3 seconds answering someone's question, even if it is the 5th, or 20th, or 1,000th time they've answered the same question.
If it insults every fiber of your body to see someone ask a question that's already been asked, maybe you need to spend less time on the forums, and more time with a doctor. Or something. The elitist attitude held by some forum members seems to run against the whole "community" idea.

As someone who has been on the staff of more than one forum I can honestly say that being rude to new members asking questions does nothing except hurt the community as a whole.
Put yourself in their shoes for a minute:
Maybe English is a secondary language to them
Maybe they have never used a forum before
Maybe they are new to the whole internet thing as a whole and don't yet know the way things work.
Maybe they are just lazy and can't be bothered to look
either way it does not really matter they have asked a question and the response to that question will build their opinion of the forum and the people who use it.
If they get a bunch of snarky answers telling them to read the guides and insulting them chances are they will never come back and leave with the impression that everyone here is a dick.
If they get a simple polite answer coupled with a polite suggestion to read the guides they will get the impression that the people here are friendly and helpful and will stick around and read more, including the mentioned guides, and in this way they will learn more about the way things are done and the community as a whole improves.
If they get no answer at all because the the said question has been answered 100 times in other threads they are more likely to go searching and find it for themselves and learn how things work and the community as a whole improves.
so to repeat something my mother always used to say to me:
"If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all"
How would you feel if lets say your grandmother got a flat tyre on her car and every person she stopped to ask for help said
"read the owners manual you n00b everything you need to know is in there"
I mean after all she drives a car so she should now how to change a tyre right?
You would think they were all dicks and you would praise the one person who took 10 minutes out of their day to help her and change her tyre and get her on her way.
it's all the same thing

Yah, I personally have no problem with people directing them to the noob guide, and if they want to refuse to answer their question (assuming it is found in the guide) out of general principle, that's fine too. But the flaming and badgering does get out of hand is not called for, for all the reasons Larkspeed mentioned above. Well said. Everyone just chill and be respectful...it's takes just as much time to be nice to someone as it does to be a jerk, but you don't win points with Jesus/karma/buddha/Harmonix/other posters/whatever by being a jerk. Well, unless your specific religion of choice encourages jerk-like behavior I guess.

I don't expect people to search through 20 pages of threads, but I'd say the vast majority of the time the question has already been asked on the first page, and occasionally on the second page.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to skim topic titles and mouseover for the preview of the post.

I have no problem answering their questions. I mean, if they are here they are obviously interested in the game, and anyone who wants to know more about it is a friend of mine! :) No need to be rude

I wish to point your attention to the fact I posted a complain like this before. So, for gods sake, its YOU being the noob without the search button.
Secondly, it won't take you long to realise the noobs suck, cos even after I defended them they stabbed me in the back. Bastards.

Its really just a question of etiquette. If someone came up to you and asked you a question that you'd answered many times, you wouldnt say "I've answered that a million times, go and read about it noob!!" would you?
So, if you are frustrated by it being asked time and time again, ignore the post and dont reply. someone else will, who perhaps is not so easily annoyed.

Not to keep all this going, but the analogy isn't quite right.
It'd be more like a guy being in a room with a ton of clocks, each one set to various time zones. And then a guy comes in and asks where the clock is that tells what time it is in Mongolia.
Sure, the answer is somewhere in the room, but it may not be blatantly obvious, and helping the guy out shouldn't be a big deal.
