As promised, TheFeed sat down with John Drake, one of the men of Harmonix, makers of Rock Band, and asked him the questions that you most wanted the answers to. John was really cool, really open, and really excited about his game. So, here are some things you should know about Rock Band.

"The game is available on November 20th, 2007," John wanted us to know, right off the bat, "and the game will come with a special band bundle for the holidays, which is the drum set, one guitar, the microphone, and the disc. And that bundle costs $169.99. And we're also releasing the disc, so if you have a GHII controller and you want to play guitar and start that way until other things come out, or just use the USB mic and do just the singing for a while, you can also do that." The control system is completely open.


Also, it was announced this week that Rock Band's release date had been moved up; originally set for Black Friday, November 23 (the day after Thanksgiving), Rock Band is now set to be in stores a few days early on Tuesday, November 20th. Check back with GameSpy regularly, as we'll have plenty more on Rock Band in the weeks to come.

Glad to see it all official finally!

I'm honestly not surprised by the move of $170 instead of $200. I was actually expecting it to be at least a little lower than the estimated $200 mark. Even if it's being sold at a break-even (or even a slight loss) type price, one assumes that the planned DLC is where they are really expecting all the major revenue to be. It would be a smart marketing decision to get the game into people's hands when you know that the DLC will likely be irresistible to most PS3/360 owners of the game (and expansion discs irresistible to PS2 owners). Creating the DLC is only a fraction of the work of creating the entire game and the peripherals, and making huge profits off that makes more sense than selling the game at a price where it might not sell quite as well.

The 11/23 is a tiny bit depressing (a Friday? I see they're taking a cue from Guitar Hero III to go with an odd day of the week), but it's just three days later than originally expected. I'll take $30 less for three more days of waiting! :)

I just realized the release date is Black Friday though... that seems like incentive to avoid the mayhem and pre-order online. It will be bad enough competing with other Rock Band fans let alone hoards of crazy soccer moms who can get an extra $10 off a DVD player. And death to any UPS man who shows up late and makes me wait the weekend. :)


The price point is extremely clever... GH3 with an additional controller would cost almost the exact same. Harmonix is seriously giving us value for the money and should be commended.

Everyone is off work, everyone is home with family, and everyone decides it's the perfect time to get cracking on Christmas shopping. Retailers, knowing this, run insane sales for that day only that usually start at 6 in the morning or something crazy. If you try to go to a mall or major shopping center on black friday, you might never be seen again.

Hopefully this will not apply as much to a tiny gamestop in a podunk little town in Illinois.

I agree that the 23rd as a release date is pretty craptastic, but I don't want to sound like I'm complaining, since the 23rd isn't all that much later than the 20th.

The only difference is a) not having the game on Thanksgiving, which would be fun, and b) not being able to get the game before Thanksgiving. I was really hoping for the 6th, or 20th, because I'm driving home the 20th for Thanksgiving.

Now I'll have to cancel my pre-order at the mall near campus, and try to arrange one at a store back at home. Unless I just feel like waiting to pick it up after Thanksgiving break....but, no.

i didnt realize you were in canada, still makes me wonder though, wouldnt the distributor try to ship everything out at once? so if they decide to get the bundles to stores by the 20th (and i know that stores may end up getting the game in the latter part of the week before release), you would still have a chance at seeing it in your store regardless of whether or not you observe black friday. the only delay would be customs or if they treat canada shipments with less priority.

The bundle "price drop" (after all, they never officially confirmed any price) is awesome, and I think its the perfect price point for the bundle. However, I'm still curious about the price of the individual instrument bundles, because most likely that's what I would be getting. We are still getting these...right? Right?

I'm glad I'm not in retail any more. My mom loves these sales though, it's become family tradition to sit around on Thanksgiving and circle things we want. Then she plans an itinerary to maximize her savings. Ahh rampant consumerism. I'm debating having Amazon ship it to me... or sending my mom out into the zombie masses to snag one.

The problem with having Amazon ship it is deciding which address to send it to... do I send it to my parents and hope it gets delivered Friday or Saturday? Or do I send it to my address and potentially miss out on a weekend of rock? Oh the agony!

Man, really give it a rest. You're acting like one of those kids that go "Oh you play guitar hero? AH! I PLAY REAL GUITAR YOU JUST GOWN OWNED YEAH!!!". It's pretty annoying, to just about everyone. Guitar Hero and Rock Band are GAMES. I have a Gibson and Kramer electric and I can play a pretty good amount of songs in about any genre I want, and I have a Yamaha Acoustic to go even further with that. The only reasons I wish it was still coming out on the 20th is that it would

1) be easier for people who didn't preorder it to get it without having to deal wiith massive black friday crowds and

2) for those of us who did preorder, it might take longer after the release date to get it because you have thanksgiving/a weekend thrown in there. Personally I paid an extra $15 for Amazon to overnight it (which seems much smarter now that the price is $30 less than I thought), but I don't know if they are going to ship it out on the 21st so I get it on the 23th, or the 23th and I won't get it until the 26th, which would kind of be a bummer.

You're right, it is fun indeed man. The only thing I have against you is this the fact you're comparing a video game to a real guitar. Can you honestly sit there and tell me you can hit every note in every song on Expert in guitar hero? Chances are no, you can't say that. Just as the real guitar has a sense of accomplishment to some kids, so does GH and RB. I did come off a bit strong in my other post though, But a few other people I talk to that play the real guitar say the same thing. I just don't understand the point of being a Jerk to some people.

Take one of my friends for instance, i'm teaching him how to play the real guitar. As for my other friend that plays the real guitar he went over to a friends house that was playing guitar hero, sat down. And started playing his real guitar. His friend asked him if he could teach him a few things on the guitar and he replied "No, you play guitar hero you emo ******". Really, what's the point of that? He also gloats around at how he can play the real guitar so theres no point in playing a video game that resembles it. The way I see it, they're two different things. So stop comparing them like they're the exact same things. I mean really, every kid that plays GH or RB realizes they're not holding strings and can't play a real guitar, so why bash on them for having their fun?


Also: If any of your friends do think they can play a real guitar because they play guitar hero... then yeah, go ahead and bash away because that's just saying what -almost- said, only vice versa.

Anyways, I still can't believe there are people making this argument. It's a video game. Sure, it shares certain experiential qualities with playing a real instrument, but at the end of the day it's still buttons on a controller and polygons on the screen.

I remember when I was young and used to play MegaMan 2 all the time the people that'd come up to me and say "LOL! WHY DON'T YOU LEARN TO ATTACH A REAL CANNON TO YOUR ARM AND FIGHT ROBOT ANIMALS FOR ENERGY PELLETS NOOB!!!1"

There's no doubt playing a real instrument is fun. I've played several for over 20 years. I compose and arrange for high school bands. I teach clinics, private students, and ensembles year round. I just think it's utterly fruitless to try to talk down to someone for playing a video game just because you can pick up a tab sheet and play Wonderwall at keggers.

And not to be totally OT--this is great news. =) $30 less is a nice perk, and hopefully there will be a midnight release so we don't have to surf the masses on Black Friday.

I like you man, I really do. I think a lot of your posts are pretty decent. I automatically assumed that your "gh2masterwellalmost" forum name was sarcasm or tongue-in-cheek humor, and I think it's awesome. Not to mention, it's long and easily recognizable while skimming through posts and names.

But I gotta' be honest, I'm siding with Eman and the others, your post about lowering the level of RB/GH games just to make your beginning journey into real guitar rockstardom more important (whether or not that was the conscious intent or not) was, to put it plainly, very arrogant and completely backwards.

I was one of the guys trying to help you pick a guitar. I gave you every bit of advice that I could, and I did everything I could to make it not be redundant, rehashing the same advice that others were giving. I've been playing guitar for longer than you've been in existance. I've played more vintage guitars and amps than you've ever heard of. I'm not trying to be arrogant myself (although I'm sure it'll come off that way), but I'm just stating facts. A lot of the musicians here are well-versed in the instrument (if not others as well), and we know our ****.

That, of course, lends itself to the fact that we KNOW that GH/RB are games. We play them for fun. We play them because it's a different challenge than playing a real guitar. We understand that it's not a creative outlet as a real guitar is, but it's fun nonetheless. I'm sure that a good number of posters here have been in bands that have done studio work, or who do their own songwriting in a home studio, myself included on both fronts. That doesn't mean that RB/GH are worth any less as a form of entertainment, relaxation (unless you're playing Jordan, that is haha), and a way to share a rockstar moment or three with your friends, musicians or not.

You've seriously been playing for a severely short amount of time, and I am totally supportive of your newfound obsession with creating music as opposed to REcreating music. You just have to realize that statements such as the ones that you made are severely arrogant, narrowminded, and insulting to other musicians AND gamers alike, especially the ones who have done their best to impart their knowledge to an aspiring guitarist.

So that's my two cents, we should drop this, and gh2, seriously, we don't hate you. We're not flaming you. We're not bashing you. I think that we just think that you're better than some of the short-sighted statements you've made.

Wow, cheaper than expected. Rock on! I do think it's a pretty sh*tty decision to release it on Black Friday. Personally, I'll be away from home, visiting family so I won't be able to pick it up day one (since I would then have to fly back home with it). Also, people who really want the game day one might get screwed by insane black friday shoppers who want to buy it and hold it for Christmas (which would piss me off I got screwed like that). However, amazon is offering free supersaver shipping on it, so it'll get here after the release date, but it'll probably be only a couple days after I get home from Thanksgiving which works out great for me. I am fully understanding of the situation, but as a loyal European fan of Harmonix (I got Frequency, Amplitude, Guitar Hero 1, 2 and 80s) I need to know how long we got to wait. Better yet, I want to know whether importing the game will give me any issues regarding downloading songs or playing multiplayer against gamers/rockers who waited a few months to get the European version.

Hey there, saw a few aussies while I was stumbling thru the pages, has anyone found or heard of a confirmed release date for Aus ? I have searched high and low with varied dates, the Aus EA home page lists time remaining for release as 42 days (Nov 20th) which I think coincides with the US (doesn't seem right), EB games has a rls date of Dec '08 :eek: (I really hope that ain't right). Any help would be appreciated, it might have to be GH3 this Chrissy for us Ozzies......

My problem was that I have never considered Aus as a part of Europe but apparently because we use the PAL system we're all in. For all the 'European Aussies' here is the news as reported on palgn.com.au/harmonixmusic.com -
Harmonix has confirmed by way of a press release something we reported last week. Rock Band has been delayed until Early 2008 in PAL regions.
It's not all doom and gloom though, with Harmonix confirming the game will be coming to the PlayStation 2 as well as the platforms previously announced; the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. The PAL wait isn't just because Harmonix wanted to keep PAL gamers waiting longer, but because tracks for each territory will be localised, which means Australia will get different tracks to America.

So expect to pay closer if not more than 200$ before taxes in Canada, compared to 169$ before taxes in the US.

They also added that the instruments would NOT be sold seperately before 2008. If I understood well, that means that you either buy the game alone and buy the instruments bundle separately and pay even more than the game + instruments package. But you won't be able to buy the game alone and for example only the guitar.

If this is all true, I am VERY disappointed... to say the least... :mad:

I wouldn't call it a "conspiracy theory" as it is something that will inevitably happen over time. Look into NAFTA and stuff with that... though the NAU isn't something I am too well versed in.

The context I referred to the term of 'global village' was one expressing the desire for a company like Harmonix to provide the same service, benefits and support to other nations (Canada, U.K., Australia... etc) as it does to U.S.

Its wonderful that a group of folk in Boston is able to make such a awesome game and in turn distribute it to the world. Its irritating that all of the features aren't accessible - i.e. tour, even simple release information. Even though I'm 431 Miles away from their head offices (694 kilometres) - HMX can't nor won't be able to provide me the same support as it does another person who live 6 times the distance in California.

Its the same thing with Nintendo. You get these grand presentation of all this wonderful functionality, products, etc... but then the sad fact is it might take 6 months (if ever) to even sniff the crack of those things anywhere outside of Japan.

/sigh :(

Of course all of this gloom will disappear once I have the actual unit in my hand free from the possibilities of delays and its negative ilk. Till then, I wait with bated breath.

I'm not sure IGN ever changed their date to the 20th. The interview confirming the 20th was on a different site, I think, and don't know if IGN ever mentioned the new date.

For the record, I don't believe everything gamestop tells me and I hope it is still the 20th. I was just sharing since gamestop is the place that first told people the 20th, so it makes since IF it had been moved back they would be the ones to tell us that too. Plus while the clerk I talked to may have, hopefully, had the wrong info, the people at my gamestop aren't the usual lieing jerks gamestop is famous for.

I'm not making those up, people have come on here saying that's what they were told by Gamestop. I never said "Gamestop are jerks", it's just common that they aren't as informed as those who check game news 24/7, yet they give false information while they pretend to know what they're talking about.

It wasn't so much against you, just don't believe what Gamestop tells you. There's no point in speculating the release date, regardless of what they say, it's set in stone, it's November 20th.

The guitar controller itself is the same shape and everything for lead as well as bass. It comes with one guitar, but how you use it is up to you, so don't fret.

I think Wal-Mart will be the place to buy Rock Band for Canadians because they seem to be doing the best for matching USA prices. Guitar 3 was the same as USA price so they should charge 169.99 for Rock Band! Unless future shop or best buy throws in something for free....im going to wal-mart!
