View Full Version : Not too many DLC surprises in the next few weeks...

Euro tracks, The Cars, and Disturbed for the next three weeks. And Doolittle is scheduled for June. If I'm not mistaken, that only leaves two weeks unaccounted for until July.
Are you glad to know so much about immediate future DLC or does this take some excitement out of it for the moment? Do you think these four releases will even happen as scheduled, or are we still in for some random schedule movements?

I'm not sure if the Disturbed tracks will be the only tracks that week. I was vaguely suspecting they'd be doing something like how they had the Motley Crue song the same week they had 3 other songs.
As for taking the excitement out... NOT AT ALL! I've been looking forward to Hysteria in the Euro tracks since the leaked list! And The Cars Full Album? On the contrary, this will be a very exciting few weeks for me! I hope they stick to the schedule, I know HMX has a history of mixing things up, but just this once I hope they stick to it.

I've wanted Rock 'n' Roll Star, Hysteria and Beetlebum since the second I saw they were on that leaked list. Don't care about being surprised, I like having something like those songs to look forward too so I can just brush off weeks of DLC that I may not care about.

i dunno about some fo those, I can see other songs added as well. for example on the euro tracks, the songs were already made in advance for a while, since they are on the euro discs. so the only thing they are doing is waiting for the release to keep up a bit of buzz, I can see it almost added on to three others songs we get much as they did with the motley crue random 4th song one week. plus I dont want to hear little kids cry they have music in another language for dlc and the ungodly epic WTF's that will be spout out by wee tikes all day.... and then from that the mexico gamers will complain they have no dlc and then another crowd will come out and say that they will complain about complaining and then everyone else will chime if to complain that people complain about complaining, and then I usually get dizzy and black out....
so for my health, I pray it doesn't happen

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Did I mention wrong?
"Offsetting hype" by releasing DLC against a proper retail release with significant pre-orders is a great way to have the DLC completely swamped and forgotten about. While a top-tier DLC release will grab some ink in the gaming press, that's not a large segment of the buying public.
A great DLC release could possibly spark 50,000 to 100,000 sales in its first month out. GH: Aerosmith might be talking over 1,000,000 in sales in the same time frame. If one were to "compete", you compete retail against retail, online with online. Activision will just laugh at a DLC "counter", as well they should. Harmonix will just do what they do, and let the chips fall where they may. Besides, why bother stealing the thunder of a title that probably has massive numbers of preorders? A DLC "counter" would only possibly sway a) customers on the margin who b) already have Rock Band for the PS3/360. Not a wide swath, there.
I'd like to reiterate, however, that every time we thought we knew what the release schedule was, Harmonix made us look really, really foolish. We'll see on the next few weeks.

I've actually been asking (both on the forums and in communication with HMX directly) for some kind of schedule all along. It doesn't kill any of the excitement for me.
I actually think it helps the DLC cause. If people know what's coming, they can save accordingly and be ready to purchase the content. By making it a surprise every week, then whenever it's a "downer" for a lot of people, they go spend their money somewhere else. That then leaves them with nothing to buy the DLC the next week when it's "up" again.
We're in a pretty unstable time economically, so even people with a decent chunk of disposable income are being selective about what they buy...
Expect something BIG the week of June 29 when GH Aerosmith comes out....Would not be surprised to see The Who catalog, Nevermind, or something equivalent...HMX will try and do something to offset it's release hype
I think HMX has shown that they aren't going to try to compete when there are other entertainment releases that will obviously trump them. I'm not talking about quality, I'm talking about popularity. I think it's fair to say that the release of Mother Hips when GTA4 was coming out was a very calculated business strategy. Why put out Led Zeppelin or Guns n Roses that week? People are spending their money on another game, so you need to wait until things calm back down. See my above comments about money/economics...

I'm not convinced that we're going to get anything alongside the nine(?) European tracks. The OXM songs that had been long completed arrived by themselves - and there were only three of those.
Perhaps if there's some promotional type song (as in Saints of LA) there will be more than just the Euro tracks, but I wouldn't necessarily count on it.
DrGonzo86

I was joking in a way. I still find it quite amusing that EU exclusive tracks are being put up for DLC in the US anyway.
I have exams the week after Rock Band is out here anyhow. I'll need someone to tear me away from it literally.

I couldn't agree more! I'm sure HMX will stick to their SOP and that isn't a bad thing at all. Although, as RB fanatics I'm sure we're all hoping for some huge blockbuster release that week....but no more than we do every week.:D

I apologize in advance for my questions; however Where did HMX post the upcoming releases for the DLC? I would like to read it and/or check it out.
As for the question of knowing what DLC's are coming.. I like it! Still, I wish i know when that Nirvana album was coming out. That is the 'big' one that I have been waiting for. But the CARS album will suffice until then.
Thanks,

Where did HMX post the upcoming releases for the DLC?
During a press briefing, Harmonix announced that The Cars is arriving in May, and Doolittle is coming in June. One recap of that briefing can be found here:
http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/levelup/archive/2008/04/18/just-the-faqs-the-cars-and-the-pixies-coming-next-to-rock-band.aspx
Harmonix announced that the Disturbed tracks would be available on June 3rd here:
http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48694
Harmonix also announced that the EU disc-exclusive tracks would be available worldwide as DLC. To my knowledge they never specifically confirmed that this DLC would be released on May 27th to coincide with the EU launch, but it is by far the most likely scenario.

Unfortunately, I am too lazy to find all the sources but here in general is how people put together the release schedule.
1. The euro tracks were released at a European gaming trade show, I forget the name. They have been since confirmed by a number of gaming sites (through HMX or EA). HMX also confirmed the euro tracks would be available in the US around the same time. Since the game comes out soon (next week?), the assumption that weeks DLC is going to be the euro tracks.
2. The disturbed tracks come from a Best Buy preorder offer that gives the two tracks away. The new album is due at the end of the month. It is assumed that the DLC will be around the same time. Edit: June 3rd
3. The two album releases The Cars, and The Pixies were announced with the Judas Priest album, again the assumption is they are going to be released one a month. Edit: Sorry apparently it was confirmed.
I would say 1 and 2 are pretty solid, and 3 is a weak assumption (Edit:there was a confirmation for 3). But this is where all the talk of the upcoming lists are coming from. There are still songs from the March OXM list and the Hacked list that have not come out yet and people keep inserting them into the schedule too.
Edit: to fix some inaccuracies in confirmations I did not know about.

I think that if the news were big enough, it would work. If they were to release Nevermind the week guitar hero Aerosmith comes out, I think that would steal the press from a guitar only game crammed full of dusty old Aerosmith Tracks, and I think sales would be through the roof.

Right... countering "dusty old Aerosmith" (who is still touring) with an album by a band who dissolved when its lead singer blew his brains out (or did Courtney do it for him?) nearly fifteen years ago.
I can understand the thinking, I just still think it's a poor move likely to get lost in the shuffle, to say nothing of the fact that the line of reasoning is just comical there.

If it was a greatest hits album, I think you'd be surprised... although it would be close.
But this is a DLC album versus a retail game, not DLC versus DLC... in which case I think Nevermind would get absolutely thumped.

I don't see what the hype is about GH: Aerosmith...
Aerosmith isn't even a great rock band, "Dream On" is their only good song.
and Nirvana has more hits than them in such a smaller time frame.
I've just never grown to like them at all...
Again, just my opinion.

Aerosmith had 21 singles hit the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, including nine top 10s and one #1, ranging in a span of 33 years (1973-2006).
Nirvana only released eighteen singles in total, of which only two (Come As You Are and Smells Like Teen Spirit) made the top 40. Of them, only Smells Like Teen Spirit hit the top ten, peaking at #6. Their two Top 40 singles were a year apart, although their overall release schedule spanned fourteen years (1988-2002, three of those singles came out after Cobain's death).
Try again. :)

Some of their stuff is pretty good... to be honest, most of Nirvana's music is just wholly depressing. I have my favorites of Nirvana, sure (Come As You Are, You Know You're Right, In Bloom, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Heart-Shaped Box, The Man Who Sold The World), but, band against band, I'd still give an edge to Aerosmith (Dream On, Same Old Song and Dance, Real Emotion, Walk This Way, Last Child, Back In The Saddle, Dude (Looks Like A Lady), Love In An Elevator, Janie's Got A Gun, Crazy, I Don't Want To Miss A Thing, Jaded, Just Push Play, Girls Of Summer, Devil's Got A New Disguise).

Its not really as exciting as it was waiting and waiting to be let down. but honestly when gh: aerosmith comes out it would make perfect sense to release Who's next because if you think about it on both gh3 and rock band was a who song and an aerosmith song. On gh3 the who was a cover, and rock band it was a master. the exact opposite for the aerosmith songs. So gh has the masters of aerosmith, and rock band has the masters of the who. So put them out the same week. I personally love the who a lot more then aerosmith. Here me HMX DO IT. DO IT. DO IT.

Although I would buy singles (DLC's) from both Aerosmith and Nirvana...
I would much rather have the Nirvana. If/when, they release the Nevermind album; my prediction is that it will set-the-mark on which all other album downloads will be measured.
Even when I listen to the 'end of year' Radio Shows who play the all time greatest albums; Nirvana's nevermind always ends up in the Top Spot.
It is not about the 'great music' that Nirvana made (although I agrue that they have some really great music); it is about the 'great impact' that Nevermind had on ROCK as a whole. The grunge scene (led by Nirvana) pushed away 'bad rock' and the 'hairband' era.
I am 38 years old.. and a huge Classic Rock fan! And still, I can't wait for the Nevermind album. It is truly one of my favorites of all time.
Thanks,
Mike

I said this back in January and got flamed, but I still believe it...
HMX has lots of great stuff on it's agenda and they will start releasing the bigger stuff when the competition is releasing new titles (GH Aerosmith, GH IV, etc). Whether they are doing a RB 2 or expansion for the holiday remains to be seen and I am sure we will have more info on what they are planning come E3..
But I bet we get Nevermind, the Who project, and other highly desired bands from late June through the end of the year......Most of the stuff released so far was done when Rockband was first released.......If you think about it, there is not a really good business reason to release the highly anticipated DLC until the initial Rock Band buzz has started to slow (which appears to be right about now based on the last few DLC week #'s). It makes more business sense to release it to steal some of the hype from Activisions many many sequels they release.....
So stay tuned for late June onward... I bet people won't ***** AS MUCH....I do know some people on this board would still complain if GNR Appetite was released, and they did not get a free download to include the first single off of Axl's bloated Chinese Democracy...

I personally love Aerosmith, and wet several pairs of pants when the GH game was confirmed. I'm probably one of the only people who wouldn't have minded if the game was entirely Aerosmith. For variety's sake, I don't mind that there are other bands' songs in the game, but I can't wait to play some Aerosmith.
Obviously I was actually hoping for some Aerosmith on Rock Band, but this is the second-best option.

with the recent songs that have come out for RB,it really seems that HMX dosent listen to its fans.. with the blondie, clash, and Sonic youth songs that have come out for download it really seems to me that HMX is listening more to thier girlfriends or wives more than us the fans!! Now if im wrong, then i want someone from HMX to let me know why im wrong, not just to say that i am,but let me know why!! Like saying that "This amount of people have requested it" or "this is how we come to say whats gonna be available". now i've been checking out the forums alot, maybe not posting as much, but just to see what people are requesting, and these past couple of weeks just havent been it... so if im wrong HMX let me know, cause it really does seem that your not listening to our requests...

I agree with this post 100%

If I have learned anything from the past weeks of DLC it is that nothing is set in stone, and there have almost always been surprises. They have not always been good, at least in the general opinion, but I always look forward to the next announcement, cause, you never know...

I disagree, IMO it would rock singing out to a language you have no clue how to speak. Its a party thing mainly from the way I look at it. I don't want to download a GERMAN song in ENGLISH, because then I might as well wait for the who or some other English band. BTW aren't their 3 or so English songs on the pack anyway?

It's less than $2 a song you cheap bastards....The Europe people get something extra since they had to wait 6 months to get the game.....Come on...

Well, if you see at my location, you''ll realize that english IS NOT my mother language, even though I am a hard/expert vocalist right now (well, I must admit that a I like english). Maybe you should ask this question to the latin americans or europeans who imported this game, and you'll get similar responses like mine. I don't have ANYTHING AGANIST songs in foreign languages, for me, is a fun way to understand (a bit) new languages. And by the way, just look the french portion of the "Call me" song and ask the singers if they failed it, I think that nobody has failed that sector even in expert. And if everything fails, humming is your friend :D .
So, for me, they are worth their price. HMX spent their time getting the masters, getting the separate tracks, mapping them for all the 4 instruments, etc...so I will gladly pay the price for the EU tracks I like.

the german songs are FANTASTIC. I just listened to them on youtube and "Hier kommt alex" and "die perfekte welle" are two awesome songs. Try them!!! They might just be the best DLC songs so far! I would even pay $10 to get them!
Why should they be free anyway? Just give it a shot to sing in a foreign language. You might not pronounce everything correctly and you certainly won't understand anything but its very exciting!
