i think the main thing to consider is do you want to play online, and are you going to be kicking yourself in the weeks following release when we'll all be talking about the DLC, but you wont be able to get it because you have it on ps2.
or maybe since it seems youre tight on cash, you wont be getting DLC anyway?

downloadable content...so while we're all playing new songs, you'll be stuck with the same setlist.

DLC = DownLoadable Content. So far, additional songs by The Who, Nirvana, and Grateful Dead have been announced, which you can purchase for a [hopefully] small fee.

buy a ps3 cuz in the long run you'll have MGS4 which will be the 2nd greatest game evor (behind only mass effect of course)

Sounds like a tough situation, so I will give some of the pros and cons as I see it.
Con: PS3 does not support any of the current Guitar Hero games, so you would not be able to play them anymore if you traded in your PS2.
Con: Very costly to get all the controllers and a new (expensive) console if you go PS3
Pro: PS3 will likely have more online features, such as the ability to play with friends via the internet, and the ability to download additional song packages over time (DLC)
Pro: The PS2 is nearing the end of its development cycle, meaning less support and fewer new games going forward. Meanwhile the PS3 is just ramping up.
Might I also suggest another option where you keep your current setup and add on an xbox 360. It currently has some significant price advantages over the PS3 while retaining the "next gen" features that a PS2 version might not have.
Whatever you choose, you will end up having a rocking good time, it just depends mainly on price, and what features are important to you.

So, buy the console with the second greatest game ever instead of buying the console that has the game that you say the second greatest game ever will be behind?
Just seems odd to me. :p
Edit: Of course, based on the content of the original post, yeah, I'd pick up a PS3 and pick it up for the PS3. Especially if you want to play online or get new songs down the road. The PS2 version really is going to be a "bargain" version.

did you really need to make a comment like that? the last thing we need in here is another damn console war.

Don't worry about RB. Throw out all your PS2 crap, buy Halo 3 + a 360, maybe some Gears of War, w.e. floats your boat, then when you're finally bored of all the fun games then you can play RB.
