with the recent songs that have come out for RB,it really seems that HMX dosent listen to its fans.. with the blondie, clash, and Sonic youth songs that have come out for download it really seems to me that HMX is listening more to thier girlfriends or wives more than us the fans!! Now if im wrong, then i want someone from HMX to let me know why im wrong, not just to say that i am,but let me know why!! Like saying that "This amount of people have requested it" or "this is how we come to say whats gonna be available". now i've been checking out the forums alot, maybe not posting as much, but just to see what people are requesting, and these past couple of weeks just havent been it... so if im wrong HMX let me know, cause it really does seem that your not listening to our requests...

I'd make the argument that they're not listening to "your" requests, not "our" requests.

your right... kinda
Obviously some people would want these songs (I did not) but the vast majority weren't exactly sh!tting a brick for Sonic Youth, more Blondie, and... MORE (implying TOO MUCH) of The Clash... if you look at the top requested bands... we have next to none of them...
Muse
Guns n Roses
Slayer (lol, I just want that)
but you get the point... i agree they seem to be listening to thier GF's more then the fans... regardless... at least, unlike GH, we HAVE DLC...
so keep up the good work HMX...

Well, we are presumably getting Muse in two weeks. I think that HMX probably does listen to its fans, but even if they are "convinced" by their fans to get something, it's still going to be 3+ months *at least* before they can even begin to implement something. Also, MTV might also sometimes disagree with what "the fans" want when deciding which masters are available.
But all in all, HMX's main thing is that instead of trying to please *everyone* *every week* they try to please *one group* *each week*. They generally cycle:
a) super popular 1 week
b) classic rock 1 week
c) metal 1 week
d) obscure music 1 week
e) promotional music 1 week
Which means that if all you're interested in is "super popular" or "classic" you're likely only going to see your interests covered once every five weeks... less than once a month.

I would say this - yes we very much listen to our fans. We look at sales data, we look at the forums, we calculate innumerable emails suggesting various tracks.
But this isn't a voting contest. That a thread regarding a particular artist may be popular does not mean that we necessarily have access to that band's songs... yet. We're always looking at what our fans are saying and using that input. However, the process is long. As I have stated before we can't just say "Oh look the (insert band here) thread is really busy let's download one of their tracks and throw it in game." The licensing process is often very long as is the procuring of proper masters. It also takes a good amount of time to properly develop, test, and certify the tracks for download.
Yes, we have released some more obscure stuff. And yes we will continue to do so. Here are some reasons why - they're optional, a lot of what are being referred to as obscure songs are actually quite fun to play (Kool Thing drums? Awesome), and we're never just going to "play the hits" as it is hardly representative of music at large (and there are plenty of people who don't really listen to hits and amazing songs that were never really hits) . After all, you don't go into your local record store and kick over their displays because they also carry music you've never heard of. Unless you do, in which case you should probably hide out for a while.
We are constantly working to get new bands and new songs on board. And this will continue far in to the future. No one here expects anyone to think that every week or month is golden and that you'll download everything. Truth be told, there are plenty of DLC tracks I don't even own! All I can say is by the end of the year there will be a wide variety of bands available for download (some widely requested, some less so that we hope you'll still enjoy), from a wide variety of genres, covering a wide spread of years. I hope you continue to be impassioned enough to care. I just wanted to give a little background.

You guys need to keep in mind that there is a huge difference between listening to and taking orders from. I'm sure HMX does listen to the fans, but what we say are merely suggestions. It might make them consider going after some licenses they might not have thought about before, although that doesn't mean they'd be able to get them anyway. At the end of the day though, you have to realize that this is thier game. They have a vision of where they want to go with it, and they also have to deal with all the legal and licensing issues that most of don't really know much about. They seem to be very happy to listen to our wants and suggestions, but that doesn't mean they can, or even want to, fulfill all of them.

They better want to listen to some of the more popular demands, though. GHIV is coming out soon, and with another alternative it becomes increasingly less viable to just say "let us teach the plebes a music lesson with this week's DLC!"
I understand Sean's comments, too. I appreciate that the lesser known music is put in, and I agree with the Kool Thing drums being awesome. The balance of obscure to highly requested just seems to be skewed in the wrong direction, though.
3 pack every week... why not 2 popular songs and 1 obscure one? Then everyone is happy.

First off thanks for responding, but that first comment makes me nervous, because im worried RB will be more about obscure bands then the big ones. You have a right to your opinion but for me and alot of people obscure songs arent fun to play regardless of how they work in the game,a fun song to play is a song we love and know,i dont download content based on "the fun factor" its all based on if i like the song or not, your charts dont play into my purchase
Secondly who still goes to record stores? or even buys albums? :D gotta love the internet nowadays lol

Very well said Andy. I would also like to commend Sean for posting here and letting us know the thoughts that go on behind the selections. I actually think a little of everything stated in this post is true.we need obscure songs..(I now love the mother hips and Wolfmother) as it broadens our musical horizons but I do think that it is a bit scewed to obscure music right now. It's also not ALL about the licensing...I mean guitar hero has benn getting some decent music lately(Who wouldn't want to DL a 3-pack of 80s Def Leppard???) If GH can do it, why can't RB? I'm not complaining, I do see both sides to this argument and I love the game and the weekly DLC...

I guess it's all preference, but charts matter to me very much. I bought the Grateful Dead pack because the charts looked great (on guitar), and became a Grateful Dead fan in the process. Can't wait for Touch of Grey.
And I still buy albums :p I used itunes mostly, but I will pick up an album every time I go to the mall/best buy.

I'm sure Harmonix has its own strategy when it comes to downloadable content. Expect occasional heavy-hitters here and there and a ton of heavy-hitters around the time GH4 is to be released... They'll need to stay competitive while not going all out with DLC as soon as possible.
Overall...they need to "pace" themselves...as they are. Everyone just needs to chill out when it comes to DLC. We're getting it weekly...there's no reason to be picky or complain. Hell, I bought this game without DLC even in mind...so all DLC available is pretty much a bonus for me.

I know exactly what you mean skimpy. I'm older and I like some blondie and the clash but it's getting to be a bit much. Maybe they should call it "Punkband", I picture rock as Van Halen, AC/DC and Def Lepard just to name a few. All the DLC songs that have come out lately are boring and I haven't downloaded any new songs in weeks. Hopefully HMX will or have been working on some rock songs. A little Guns N' Roses wouldn't hurt, and as much as I hate to say it GH3 has better DLC than RB by far. Pony up HMX and get some good DLC.

I'm sure that HMX has "neglected" these bands or "forgot" about them:rolleyes: Seriously, I'm sure they're looking at it, but why would they release one of these bands right now? The DLC they are releasing is still selling like crazy. Not only that, wait until they release GNR and then you get some turd in the forums "I hate Axl's voice" or "GNR sucks" Its just the nature of things on these boards. I've not *****ed about a single week of DLC, yet, I haven't downloaded a lot of it. Just get a life, find something else to do if you don't want to play the same old stuff on Rock Band and just know that you really shouldn't take this stuff so seriously.

I still buy CDs, the quality still stinks but it's always tons better than quality you get from this so called internet you speak of.
And to get back on point, It's because of RB that I discovered of bunch of great bands that I would not have been exposed to. Everyone is entitled to the way they do things but it sounds like some people were born knowing and loving certain songs and bands and that's it. No room for more.

It seems the only people complaining week after week of new DLC are the people that want their GNR or Van Halen fix and haven't gone past 1990 in terms of music listening.

Forgive me for not kissing Sean's ass like everyone else. I'm sorry, but HMX needs negative feedback as much as positive or they'll never know where the deficiencies are...
That being said...
An admission to one of the "conspiracy theories" being floated around the forums. Why couldn't you guys have just come out ahead of time and said:
"Look, we know you want the big stuff. We're working on it. But you probably won't get that more than once a month. In between, we're going to release lesser known bands or indie bands to get some stuff into the game that you might not otherwise be exposed to. Make sure you listen to the song first, but if you don't like it, don't download it. No hard feelings."
At least then people wouldn't be sitting here after 2+ months of decidedly non-big DLC with feelings of deceit and disappointment.
And even if they've alluded to this in various blog posts or interviews... it needed to be said UP FRONT. Either on the game box or somewhere in the game. It's incredibly unfair for them to act like they didn't knowingly use a questionable marketing practice to inflate their initial reception.
I know that there are people that want the stuff being released. That's all well and good. But, how many MILLIONS more downloads would HMX see from the bands we all keep mentioning: Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, GnR, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, The Eagles, Def Leppard, etc. Those bands sold tens of millions of albums. It's not like their stuff wouldn't be popular. Licensing aside, can we get SOME kind of statement about that status of the bands that a majority of the fans are clamoring for? It can be in as general of terms that are necessary to not be in any kind of legal hot water:
"If you look at the 25 best selling bands of all time, we have been in contact with most of them and are working out the details necessary to bring their music to Rock Band. We hope to have this resolved sooner rather than later, but it very well could drift into 2009 before you'll see many of them."
If you happen to get them sooner, great. But at the very least, it buys you well over a year to work on it. That ought to be plenty of time to come to some conclusions about the possibility of those bands in the game, especially coupled with the years you've already been at this business...

Personally, I like your thinking. . . But I'd argue for atleast one fresh off the charts song every week. That's still only 4-5 new ones a month considering there are about 50 new song a month, I don't think that is too much to ask.
Oh yeah, and that they increase their production to 4 songs a week so that the chart song doesn't effect the pack.

True sean, but the record store has HUNDREDS of albums, while you guys have ONE. With Rock Band, a bad week of DLC means you own EVERYTHING YOU WANT. Which means we naturally want something else we like to download. Huge difference between a hundred song library and a billion song library. But, hey, I'm not mad. The Euro DLC has made up for the past lousy weeks. In fact, I'm happy about the bad weeks now, cause otherwise I wouldn't be able to afford this epic week. So thanks.
PS: Nice joke. That's why you're my favorite Moderator/Developer. That and you're not an ass like certain HMX developers....
uhh actually
I requested jukebox hero before the game even came out. And i was begging for Gimme Three Steps, Simple Man, and Message in a Bottle. So they definitley listen
I love you too sean

I think i have disgree with poster on this. If you look at it like this there has to some people who request these things or ppl would never download them. If they keep putting them out there, ppl are probley downloading them. So by "we" u mean, you a portion of the ppl not EVERYONE. Some ppl must be happy to have these songs. Besides it would take time to get rights to make it and them make the song(s) and then test.

i think they do. but just the members out here on these forums doesnt tell much. theres probably alot of people not registered who want the songs being released. all these bands they release have some sort of high popularity (except earache thrash pack) But that still brings me to my number one question for hmx... and that is...
WHEN THE HELL WILL MEGADETH BE ON THIS GAME!!!???
anyways. i honestly have to say that the sonic youth release could have been a big f you to neversoft. (and they deserve it) because the hmx chart is alot better and shows that that is not a song for guitar hero. the drums are where the action is at on that song. Hard to determine this though. they do have some good picks for this game even if they are deciding amongst the staff of hmx.
