View Full Version : FC'ing Vox = You can sing?

Being ignorant in anything musically related, I'm wondering if by the time you can kill the Expert levels on vocals; will that mean you can actually sing with awesomeness?

Is that how it works.. or is there more that goes into good singing that karaoke tech can't keep track of?

Yes, stupid question from a stupid person.

Yup, do you have a crappy voice? It doesn't matter if you're totally on tune, you might just have such a horrible voice that noone wants to listen to you. Also there are dynamics (how loud you sing) which all determine your ability. It's more than just being in tune.

I completely agree, but that being said, I would think that being able to master expert vox would at least be a decent start at becoming a passable singer. And really, if you're looking to improve your vocals I'd imagine tone quality and dynamics would be something you work on while you're playing the game.

I've been using Karaoke Revolution the past couple months to help get me ready for Rock Band and, while I by no means consider myself to be a great singer, I think the act of singing on a regular basis has helped develop slightly better tone quality. Granted not on the level that taking true voice lessons would, but an improvement nonetheless.

you can be a god awful singer and own at karaoke revolution. I sing like **** and I can 100% songs on the highest difficulty on karaoke revolution. It's all about being able to manipulate your voice. So being a good singer and being good good at rock band vocals DOES NOT coexist.

Yeah, but didn't they say Rock Band was a lot more advanced than KRevolution? Probably still means you suck at singing even if you do FC an expert song though. I wouldn't go as far to saying it's like the Guitar part and it'll never help you get slightly better at what it's trying to recreate (which in this case is vocals aka your singing) But I don't think it'll make you a Freddy Mercury any time soon.

If you can 5-star everything on vocals, you can definately hold your pitch and say the right words. There's a lot more to singing, but as a singer myself, it is my opinion that if you can nail singing on expert, you're a hell of a lot closer to being a singer than you are to being a guitar or bass player (and probably drummer too) on their respective modes.

I stand corrected if that's the case since I have never played any of the Revolution games.

being able to hold a pitch and being able to sing the right words doesn't make you a great singer. for instance take Chris Cornell and make him sing a song on rock band and I can guarentee you that he would not pass the song.

I can back this. Not that I'm a horrible singer, but when playing KR, there were times I just wanted to get certain trophies, and would bs my way through songs. Its very easy to just hum, and get 100% on just about any song. Also, its a lot easier to sing notes when you sing very softly. I kind of hope RB addresses these two ways of "cheating", if its even possible, as it would be more fun if singing was actually a challenge.

I have a horrible singing voice, but I have taken many years of piano lessons and part of learning piano is learning perfect pitch in your voice. What I'm trying to say is even though I don't sound very good when I sing I still kill at karaoke revelution because I have perfect pitch. I was at the RockBand tour in Chicago today, and I did try singing I hovered around 85-90 percent but that was because I didn't know all the words. Once I learn the songs I see no problem scoring very high. Once again it's not how you sound it's all about pitch.

the key with rockband is just keeping your vocie consistant. You change the tune of your voice based on where the arrow is. Eventually you know where your voice should eb when a lyric is coming up. The advanced part is RB determines if your pronocuing teh lyrics correctly not just the tune. Once I figured that stuff out I did ok.

the problem with games like Karaoke Revolution, Singstar and Rock Band is that most singers don't sing 100% on key. There are "wind-ups" to notes (more subtle than the pick-up notes that are sometimes present in KR/SS, which half the time are dumbed down anyways), and even though every once in a while I can sing fairly decent, and I like the sound and style of my voice, because there are "imperfections" in how I sing, the game doesn't register it as correct. You have to be dead-on with no melodic glides in order to FC a karaoke game. which is too bad, because half the time the original vocalists have them in there and the game doesn't always recognize it (like in Panic! At The Disco's song in Singstar).

But, perhaps I'm just making up excuses to defend my self-acknowledged improper singing technique. :D

Just say you have a Dylan-esque voice. That's what my friends do ;)

It would be great if RB had a drunk mode where it scored you as awesome as you're sure you sound at the moment. =P

Well, I sang like crap, then after a while of playing Singstar my singing skill has increased a notworthy amount. I mean, I'm still not a good singer, but I'm a damn sight better than I once was since I'm now beter at holding a note and making sure my voice is at the right pitch and tone. Same as when I started learning guitar (still a neophyte, by the way): I sucked at it, but playing Guitar Hero helped me gain a lot of finger discipline and increase the muscles in my fingers as well as overall dexterity. Guitar Hero didn't directly improve my guitarmanship (what a cool word), but it did the same as Singstar, which is increase things related to it.

Has anyone who has played Karaoke Revolution had any experience resolving mic/voice recognition problems?

Specifically, when I tried the game, the arrow just wants to fly all the way up or down unless I practically whisper/hum; but then if I belt it out with a moderately high volume, it can be on track sometimes as well. It was frustrating that no matter what I put the Mic Gain at I could not get it to recognize me consistently throughout a song; a feat that Singstar has no problem with in its game/mic.

I can practically shout in Singstar and it knows what I am doing. KR or that Logitech mic seem questionable to me.

Just have Simon Cowell there to judge you, that should answer your question.

After witnessing a lot of different people playing the game, I'm almost positive that I'll not be singing in front of many people. I'll wail on the guitar and pound on the drums all day, but it's going to take a lot of alcohol to get me to touch that mic! :p

No worries, as with most of us, if you really wanna sing multiplayer, go online and sing! (People online can't hear the singer's actual voice)

Heh, yea. I'll probably sing in single player. Luckily we've already got a lead singer for our band, and he can actually sing!

well, I'm fairly musically inclined as my parents are both in a band (mom rocks the drum kit.. Hells yeah!) I play piano, trumpet, and guitar, but singing, sweet Jesus I don't know what happened. I have a fairly low voice so I have trouble finding songs that are in the correct octave for my voice. I do Anthony Kiedis justice though, which is awesome because pre-superstar RHCP is probably 3rd in my faves behind Nirvana and NIN. Where is this post going? Nowhere, just bored at work and blathering on. Anyways, I second my motion of having drunk mode for Vox. =)

Actually... you don't really even need to sing. You can hum it. I know it sounds weird.. but as long as your in tone, you can hum the song and still pass it.. I wouldn't expect this to work on expert or maybe not hard. But yeah..

sooo wrong dude sorry, this ain't no f*cking SingStar or anything lol

Rock Band's mic is patently designed to recognize the words you say. It uses phenomes to pickup consonants and vowels. I mean, unless you only want to play on Easy, but who knows if that even works.

Actually, the mic is a regular mic. All the phoneme detection is done in software.

And didn't we get a confirmation sometime back that the pitch and phoneme detection wouldn't be running at the same time?
