View Full Version : After Buying Rock Band, Anyone Not Playing The Drums?

Just curious, cause my wife played them for a bit, i tried, dont like, so manily just guitar and singing in my crib. Just wonder how many people did this too, i would rather have three guitars, lead, rythm, bass and singing than playing the drums.

I haven't done much on drums up to this point. I played through a solo career on easy, but I'm much more fond of the guitar. I plan on getting through the drums at some point though.

for me, drums is the whole point of the game. I play the other instruments, but not nearly as much as I play the drums. You should give them another chance. Play on easy, it can be tough to coordinate your foot at first but you'll get the hang of it. and don't swing your arms, use your wrists.

I tried the drums once and then gave them away as a present to a friend. I played drums for 14 years and found it too limiting to only play when the notes told me too. I was too used to playing the feel of a song instead of the technical notes. Too much Deadhead in me I guess or just too much a non-conformist, but the note charts and my limbs did not agree ever.

opposite for me. I only touch my guitar when my drums are unplayable. You know, broked. Noise isnt an issue for me w/ teh drums. If they are too loud for my girlfriend, i just tell her to go sleep in the car.

I didn't like the drums at first, as I was out of practice and didn't really like the way the pads were set up, but I climbed to expert pretty quickly. I like the drums a lot, but for non-drummers, it can be intimidating, especially those without a sense of rhythm. My advice, start with bass pedal, then use one hand (using your wrists, not banging them around) then using both.

I bought the complete bundle, but am pretty much sticking with bass and guitar. I thought I'd enjoy drums, but it's really not for me after all. My bandmate however who was gungho Guitar Hero prior to RB now loves drums and pretty much plays them exclusively.

I freaking love the drums, but I had a few problems with them that mainly constricted me to playing the guitar in the game.

1. Finding a comfortable seat from which to play the drum. You have to move around a LOT. You need a stable chair that isn't on wheels, so like, a kitchen table chair. The kitchen table chairs are from an antique set from my wife's grandmother, so my wife won't let me use them, and the older set we had the chairs feel like they're ready to fall apart, so I don't really like them either. I had to buy a drum throne. $50.

2. Finding a better set of drum sticks. The ones that come with the game are so basic, and I kept feeling like I should be getting a splinter from them, so I shelled out for some nicer sticks at Guitar Center when I bought the throne. $6.

3. Dealing with a cat who believes the drum sticks are fun cat toys. The sticks must be a very attractive nuisance to a kitty. My cat starts rubbing against my leg when I'm playing drums, which drives me nuts. He's also stupid and doesn't understand the concept of 'Go away' unless I lock him in another room, which is mean.

4. I need to change to play the drums, as I find it's more comfortable to play drums while wearing shorts and a t-shirt than jeans and a sweater. I'm a fat guy, so playing drums is a good workout.

5. Drumming tends to be very repetitive on some songs, and getting stuck on Green Grass and High Tides on Normal on the five minute repetititve pattern pissed me off so I stopped playing for a month.

My drum set hasn't gotten as good a workout as it probably deserves.

Drums are the most fun I've had playing ANY video game. I am about halfway through the expert drum career and finally beat Run to the Hills on hard. It has totally changed the way I listen to music and I find myself able to pick up the different things going on on drums in songs I've listened to all my life.

Without drums, I probably would have stopped playing this game a long time ago.

I played GH religiously for 4 games, and since I got Rock Band, I haven't even touched the guitar. There are few exceptions, like the rare occurrence where a friend comes over and wants to try drums, or we do some quickplay and pass it around for kicks, but otherwise....drums all the way. I like it so much better then the fake guitar, as I really feel like I'm getting better, and might be able to move to a real drum set one day.

Drums brought the game to a new level, from just a game to something more real, at least for me.

x2 on this one. drums are the best part of the game for me. vocals come in a good 2nd though :)

I'm terrible at them, so very rarely. The problem mentioned with finding the right seat is one I have as well. Time for a drum throne. I also need a large rubber mat or something to set the stand on. It keeps sliding around on my hardwood floor.

A Harmonix-issued sturdier, heavier stand with rubber grips and more responsive, quiet heads would be very nice, as I neither have the time or the inclination to build a mod given that, as previously posited, I'm terrible at playing the things.

I play guitar or bass first, then vocals, then drums. But by no means do I dislike drums. I'm just not very good at them yet and I mostly play multiplayer. Since I want to be at least decent when I play with other people, I haven't had as much chance to play them as I'd like.

I fell in love with Rock Band drumming so much, I bought myself a set of real drums to learn on. I was wondering whether THAT would get me to pick up the RB guitar or mic a little more, but so far, no.

(I do enjoy guitar and vocals when I'm playing in groups. They just aren't fun solo like the drums.)

After playing GH2 and GH3 religiously and being able to 5* almost every song on expert, I find a very welcome change in playing drums. I play them almost exclusively right now, just to get better at them. I also sing when my foot gets too tired to move, yet have rarely touched the guitar since I got the game. I don't even have a career started on guitar, probably won't until I get past hard mode on drums.

I love the drums! So much so that, when my kick pedal recently broke, I bought an Omega pedal (still hasn't shipped :(). I hardly ever play guitar or bass because I'm not very good at it.

I thought I was the only one who drummed whenever I felt like it. My wife has just accepted the fact that some nights she just needs to shut the bedroom door and let me punch myself out. :D

That being said, I drum about 25% of the time I play. It used to be more 50-50, but RttHs on expert is the last song I have to complete and it has driven me away from drumming in general. I have gotten to 81% and failed and it is just so frustrating that I get snapped to it between EVERY EFFIN song if I play solo.

I bought all the peripherals, I am going to play all the peripherals. I find a ton a fun in all of them but like everything in life you need to practice a bit before you get the hang of it.

Drums RULE and are pretty much all I use. Started back in the day with all the PS2 GH games. Absolutely loved them. Then, I got to play RB a few months before it came out and just fell in love with the drums. I've been THE drummer in our "band" since release day. Started on Medium, now I'm doing a bunch of songs on Expert, most on Hard and the top tiers on Medium. Next to singing, (IMO) that is the most realistic "instrument" in the game. Still play a few times a week, whether alone or with people on and off-line. Doesn't matter. It takes some time but like others have said, the more you practice, the better you get! Keep at it!

Unfortunately now I pretty much suck on guitar. Oh yeah, and can't sing worth a damn. But hey, at least I try, right?

Beat Drum Solo Tour on Med
Most of the way through on Hard. Damn you RTTH!!!!

I play all of the instruments. I am currently stuck on Don't Fear the Reaper on expert, but I play a lot of DLC on drums.

When I start played the game, I knew I wanted to sing and drum. After trying them out, I'm glad to confirm my desire was correct. I sing more than I want to since drums are loud at night. It also means I'm not progressing as much as I like. Currently stuck on Reptilla expert drums. The part isn't even hard, but somehow I'm not making the transition.

I'm the opposite. I pretty much only play the drums now. When I first started, I had a lot of trouble with them (couldn't even beat some songs on easy/medium) and just played guitar. I got fairly proficient at guitar; to the point where I could complete about 80% on Expert.

But, then I started playing quite a bit with my friend and since he enjoyed the guitar (he owns all the GH games), I started playing the drums since I don't care for doing vocals in the game. I got really into it and now, like I said, I pretty much just play the drums now..it's so much fun.

But hey, to each his/her own.

LOL yep. I got the PS3 for Rock Band, and RB for the drums :) Took 3 months to convice my wife it would be a good purchase. Since then - she loves and hates the game - ... hates that I play it just about every minute I'm home :D but loves that it's a game we can play together :)

I play other the guitar once in a while, beat the guitar expert solo career 5* every song but RTTH & GG&HT (4* those), and GS a few songs .. but for the most part, yeah I'm a drummer - was top 300 on PSN, but haven't played the original 58 in a week so I'm now like 303 :( :D

It's 1 of the most popular instruments to play during parties. Most people always want to give it a try.

I bought the game cause I loved the GH games so I knew I'd love this game. I used to play the drums but haven't touched an actual set in years. I still play the guitar but I prefer the drums. I don't like the singing at all. Not because I can't sing but because it's just not fun for me.

No drumming here.

I'm a disabled gamer and I can't work the foot pedal. Only local gamers to me are, well, my family, and none of them like the drums. They tried them, did badly, didn't like failing songs, and gave up in favor of going back to the guitars.

I'll probably be offloading my drums on eBay soon. On the positive side, I can now buy GH4 for $60, since I have the Xplorer and a rock band USB mike, and that's all I need / want.

I think its a trend. The only people that I know that play drums are those who have just mopped the floor with guitar modes. Everyone else is scared off by the inevitable failing when first playing, then they go right back to playing guitar on hard... :D Though thats not true in EVERY case.

What really grinds my gears is when people hate DLC because the guitar parts arent Guitar Hero 3 enough (read: over the top).

I think Green grass high tides is the only song I can think of that has a harder guitar chart than the drums. (Run to the Hills is hard on guit- OH WAIT....)

People just ignore the drums, but thats where the real fun is at! Amirite?

Edit: Vocals come in second because the singer is always the loner....

For me the drums made this game a success, at least in my house. I got the game thinking that I would be able to sing on expert and play with my 3 teenagers, but singing turned out to not be much fun on expert for me at least. Also being that I'm a blue collar worker who has broken every finger on both hands at least once, guitar on expert for me wasn't gonna happen. So I gave the drums a try and haven't looked back. Now I'm almost through the expert tour and have done 120/135 songs with a few gold stars thrown in.

i personaly havent really touched my 2 sets of drums(yeah i bought an extra)
but when i go to parties, which i do do and bring rock band, others end up wanting to play/dual, so they at least come in handy there

vocals still seem to lack ALOT more then drums in most places

I don't play drums much by myself.

I usually play guitar or practice vocals by myself. However when I'm at a party or something I like playing drums or help other people play drums a lot more.

I've only had the game a week (UK) but drums is the main reason I bought RB, and really enjoy them. I would say they are harder (for me at least) then guitar, but then I have the experience of GH on guitar, rather than starting from scratch on the drums. I'm now towards the end of Meduim Drum solo career, and can play one or two songs on hard, but for now, I'm happy concentrating on getting higher accuracies throughout medium. At a certain point in an evening, I start worrying about the noise and try to hit the drums really lightly, and so start dropping random notes. That's when I switch to guitar for the rest of the evening.

Run to the Hills and Green Grass & High Tides (the aforementioned 5 minute fast time beat) are both absolute nightmares on drums (medium). I 5* both first try on guitar (medium).

But, I'm in no hurry to get to expert drums. As long as I'm having fun it doesn't bother me that I'm not an uber drummer (yet :D)

I tried vocals for the first time last night and I was surprised at how fun it was.

I've found that I have zero natural ability with the drums at best. Haven't tried them again since the day I got RB. I couldn't even manage to do the tutorials with any proficency. It's kinda sad. :)

me. Recently I realized that I really suck with the drums, it is really hard for me to keep the rythm even in easy. Maybe I'll re-start my guitar solo career someday, but I'm a loss with the drums. Vocals are definitely my way to go.

I'm pretty crap at drums. I've beaten 49 out of the 55 on expert but that's just beating the songs, I try to beat the songs, not go for score. I like having all 3 though because I enjoy doing all 3 parts depending on the songs and sometimes I'll get the urge to play drums or sing so it's good to have it there. Singing I'm better at than drumming. Guitar I'm better at than singing. You get the point.

Eventually when I get sick of the guitar I will set them up and give it a go.

I have played everything but Bass.....Drums are by far my fave....

I normally play on medium because I am stuck on the hard tour and it drove me crazy playing one song over and over.....

I don't have tons of time to concentrate on the expert career...I've tried but suck....

I don't play online because if you pick medium people get *****y.....

I'll stick with solo and with friends I guess.....

So way back when, we tried the demo drums out in store.
They really should have mentioned the lack of the foot pedal, which we knew nothing of, being the uninformed consumers that we are.

We hook them up and of course start failing out because of whatever feature that unknown orange bar scrolling across the screen meant.

We quickly discovered Easy meant three colors for guitar and five for drums.
We opted to go with the simpler route and to this day the drums are still waiting for their proper welcome in our house. Someday... :)
