View Full Version : Am I the only one betting very heavily on DLC?

Since the lineup from the game itself makes me weep how pisspoor it is, i am banking a lot on downloads in the future. but in other threads im seeing people saying harmonix cant find masters of this or that. i dont like todays music. i dont even call it that, but with very few exceptions. maybe its just because im getting older now (in my thirties now), but the bands today just seem like talentless hacks who need to brush their damn hair and stop acting like androgenous sexually ambiguous suicidal losers. at least bands in my day actually succeeded when they tried to kill themselves. they walked the walk. today the "look" is all thats required to be cool. poseurs all of them. tatoos, emo hair, makeup, boys wearing girls pants, pants showing entire asses (guys not the girls).
ok im done spreading love. sorry. but anyway, theyre talking a good game about making tons of music available, but if all im hearing is excuses about why they cant do it from the golden age of rock, im not sure im going to invest all that much. or maybe at all.

I wouldn't say the list is "piss poor" in the least, but to each their own. I feel the same way about newer music these days, but are we even looking at the same list of songs? The small rant you went on describes, maybe 2 or 3 songs. Hell, there's only 7 songs listed that are from the 2000's, and one of those is a NIN song. So I really don't see the examples of crappy 'today's' music you are *****ing about.
But in the spirit of your question, yes, I am betting heavily on DLC. I'd be happy with just the on-disc tracks, but what I find enjoyable is playing a wide variety of songs. Unlike the fake-guitar gods on Scorehero, I'm less interested in anally playing every song over and over until I 100% everything on expert. I'm more interested in having tons of songs to choose from. So while I will be getting GH3 as well, Rock Band is the reason I'm buying a 360 elite, investing in a, hopefully, long life of downloadable tracks.

The setlist is fine as it is, it just needs a few more 60s songs. I'm sure DLC will be varied, as well.

yeah youre right, i was a bit grumpy this morning sorry. comes with age. ;) but yes, there are some missed opportunities with the chosen music. in business you are competing for a finite pool of dollars from an audience that you are serving. you would think that they would make every effort to get a "home run" song list that would just squash that other game coming out soon. gh3 has its merits, but is still inferior in scope. as ambitious as the build up to RB is sounding, i cant help but feel like theyre not putting in enough effort to get those marquis songs. i see too many people saying theyre going to buy both games, and while thats good for us that we have that choice, it is not good for HMX if theyre competing for your dollar.
counting up the songs on that announced list, theres, what? 29? so still theres at least a dozen or so to go. i just hope that they arent aiming for the middle again and get some really iconic additions to their repertoire.

My theory is that for DLC to be successful, there's going to be the need for a pretty substantial install base with lots of retail sales.
Therefore, it makes sense to have a retail setlist which may not have the "best" classic songs, but a lot of popularized tracks that people will recognize. The video game fanbase is skewed toward a younger demographic, so newer songs are necessary to round up as large an audience as possible.
Of course once the audience is in, and the fanbase is established, they can go crazy with DLC tracks to cover a hundred different genres, bands, and musical styles. But you have to get them all "in the door" first, so to speak.
That's my theory behind it all anyway. If you look at the way the songs are broken down by decade, it's drastically skewed towards modern music. Since this represents a dramatic departure from the strategy used for the Guitar Hero series, I'm guessing there has to be some reason.

i agree that the main setlist sucks, but im going in a different direction for DLC. i love todays music. i hate that MTV fall out boy, mcr, p!atd etc ****. im hoping for dlc for more talented bands like the human abstract, the fall of troy, protest the hero, opeth, etc.

I agree with you. I hate this list. I hate Modern Alternative, and especially Grunge.

In terms of sheer numbers, GH3 has RB. I really want RB to succeed but with only 45 songs as opposed to the 70+, it's really hard right now. Plus RB's getting released on the PS2. The PS2 will, hands down, be their biggest seller but those owners don't and won't care about DLC because it's not even an option for them. Unless they bring back the hard drive, which is very unlikely. And 45 songs? C'mon, this is EA and MTV. How many songs are in a "Burnout" or a "Need for Speed"? You're telling me that EA can shell out all these songs but in a game where the only point is to play music, I only get 45 songs?
I'm an average consumer, I don't care about DLC. I want to play all the songs now, not wait until EA feels they're ready. Yeah, The Who and Nirvana are nice bands but I don't care about playing their entire albums. At least not yet. I understand that EA wants to namedrop but if I heard that "The Wall", "Master of Puppets", or "Electric Ladyland", I'd be a lot more interested. It'd be great to see a Who or Nirvana album eventually but not right out the gate. You wanna make money, you cut the crap and send out albums from people like Hendrix or Metallica. People know the names. They might not know their songs but they definitely know their names. And that's how you get the average consumer to care about DLC and buy a PS3 or a 360. C'mon, who wouldn't want to play "Damage Inc." with a bunch of people?
One of the things I'm looking forward to greatly in GH3 is playing "One" with a bunch of drunks on Halloween. Would I want to play it in RB? Yes and no. I love karaokeing and I love to sing along with a song but that's because I'm just having fun and not being graded on it or anything. At first I was gung-ho about the mic-aspect of RB but now, not so much. I'd much rather think I can sing and let James do the barking. Now, there are some songs that I know I can pull-off well ("Hand That Feeds" and "Cult of Personality" flare up) but I'd rather rock out with my plastic guitar and illusions of grandeur than have a game tell me I can't sing.
But yeah, "Planet Terror" comes out in two weeks along with "Transformers" and "28 Weeks Later" comes out next week. Hopefully you metalheads picked up "Metalocalypse: Season One" along with the soundtrack this week.

Keep in mind Rock Band's 45 songs doesn't count any bonus songs and GH3's supposed 70+ does.

It's Harmonix, not EA calling the shots. Plus, Master of Puppets may be DLC; they've already announced a bunch of Metallica songs would be (but not which ones, although "One" is rumored).

Try vocals on Easy mode; you don't have to be a good singer. As I understand it, Easy mode is pretty much a "just for fun" mode.

Yeah I'm betting heavily on it too.I mean, with the power of MTV,by next year, they'll have all of the GH songs for DLC anyways. But it seems like there not really talking about it.
If they really want to sell, they gotta pull out the big ones to get heat off of GH.If they get Albums like ..And Justice For All,Destroyer,Nevermind,Paranoid, etc for DLC, they'll have people eating out of the palm of their hands.
Probably by next summer they'll probably have full disks for Pink Floyd and Zepp.I'm really praying for Kickass DLC

I hope they have some good DLC. Queen's Wembley album would be nice. Or Bowie.

Ya I am also banking on DLC. (gets dice ready)
****ty list right now, I love grunge, just not the ones they picked.
Although I think it is safe to say DLC is going to be a pretty good bet considering there first release of whos next.

Agreed, the set list is perfectly fine, stop *****ing about it because your top 45 songs didn't make it on the game. I didn't expect one song, that I wanted, to be on this game. I'm glad I did it that way, because not one of the songs I wanted is on this game.
BTW,
It has one 60's song...
It needs a ****LOAD of 60's songs so, I'm counting on DLC. I think DLC is the greatest idea and with a game like this, they should come out with DLC every week... forever, until there isn't a song in the world that isn't playable. (Unless it really sucks that bad)

For the most part, I think the announced set list is OK. Not the greatest, but not the worst either.
I'm also banking heavily on DLC if for no other reason than to have new stuff to play. After working my way through GH, GH2 (both ver) and GH 80s I'm desperate for some new music. Thank God GH3's shipping later this month, because it should tide me over until later next month when RB finally drops.
However being this close to go, I really wish someone would throw us a bone on details (cost, how the interface is going to work, etc). But we still do have almost 2 months, so I guess anything's possible.

I'm realizing now that GH is great for metal and RB is great for everything else. At first I was getting aggrivated that RB was lacking but now not so much. Woo, RB!

Exactly, Guitar Hero is all about technical guitar work and other heavy guitar-centric tracks. Rock Band should be open to songs that are more catchy and fun that would be too easy for Guitar Hero. I defintely think there should be challenge to Rock Band, but anyone who enjoys karaoke knows how much fun it is just to hang out with friends and play the songs you love, even if they are simple.

NFS Most Wanted has 26 songs,Carbon has 30,Prostreet hasn't been announced yet.
Burnout 3 (the first from EA) has 40,Revenge has 41,Dominator has 33 (counting the 4 Avril songs as one since they're all the same song),Paradise hasn't been announced yet.

i stopped reading after piss-poor.
yea man no need for hate here. I actually really dig the soundtrack, it's weird you think it's terrible. Honestly, I dislike no songs on the tracklist so far. Which is saying something. Hopefully they'll put Megasus or Made in Mexico on the list so I can something to not play :P

by the way, about the 45 songs comment, remember that this is 45x4. there is guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. that's 180 seperate things to do in the game(not including bonus songs and dlc)

That's hilarious. I loved every song in Guitar Hero 1 except for Made in Mexico, and in GH 2 it wasn't the only one I didn't play, but it was definitely on that list.
