well a buddy of mine had this conversation (sort of) yesterday. we were questioning if radiohead are now an indie band, but we came to the conclusion that unsigned bands aren't indie but just unsigned. fyi indie isn't a genre despite what dumbasses say. and i'd say its progressive-ish alt rock. alt is a ****ty term and i hate to use it, but they're not a full on prog band, so progressive-ish alt rock fits more i guess :|

Radiohead is not for everyone. But that said, it's your loss if you don't dig it.

I NEVER said they were bad at all, I actually like Radiohead, but seriously, people act like they're the ****ing second coming or something. They're just a band with talent.

I swear it's just like Tool fans...they put their band on a pedestal.
I love Tool and I enjoy a lot of Radiohead(though overall they are too mellow for me).
I'm exposed to a lot of Tool fans, and I swear, most of them think these guys are now demi-gods who have transcended into a pure spirituality. The thought of Maynard and the guys having a beer together or watching a football game is downright OFFENSIVE to some of these people.
This is the image of Tool the hardcore fans must see:
We're at Maynard's vineyard in Arizona.
Maynard is drinking a rare red wine made with the blood of ancient Native American tribesmen who once inhabited the land...he is also translating the Qa'ran into swahili using a form of meditation pioneered by the chinese in the ming dynasty.
Adam is outside practicing an ancient form of yoga in an attempt to conjure a spirit that may inspire his next music video for the band...throughout these attempts he enters hallucinagetic states in which his subconscious controls his every action...only through achieving these states can Adam conjure the spirits...that's why the band only has a few music videos.
Meanwhile, Justin is harvesting vines in the field using an ancient utencil made of ivory and used by African tribes before the slave trade. In order to obtain this tool(no pun intended), Justin had to travel to the savannah and slay 2 baby elephants in ritualistic fashion. Once he returned to america, he had to bless the ivory with another African ritual involving pepto bismal and a cougar pelt.
And finally, Danny is attempting to uncover the secret of life itself by perfecting a hexigonal drumming pattern first discovered by nostradamus. While his conscious mind laboriously practices this pattern, his subconscious is on a journey into the great pyramids of egypt in order to recover a rare artifact crucial to the pattern. Danny learned this subconscious technique from an aboriginal soothsayer on his most recent vision trip to australia.
Anyway, you get the point. Funny thing is, Tool realizes this and they make fun of it so much. Stop taking this **** so seriously...enjoy the damn music and stop worshiping these guys.
Oh yeah, radiohead...sure...same stuff? lmao.

I just always say they are an experimental rock band. You can't easily define Radiohead, and that is one of the joys of that band.

Hmm, I think I would have to go with:
indie-prog-alt-triphop-electronica-rock
Tool would be more of:
hardrock-prog-metal-psychedelic-rock
Aren't genres great!!!!

the last sentence from your post wasn't there when i read it
my statement still stands though since someone else labeled them as indie/independent and thats pretty ******ed since they were on one of the biggest record labels in town

Do they have to be assigned to a genre? Or any other band for that matter?
Just curious...

The genre I've heard next to radiohead most often is art-rock. I think it fits as they're music has a particular je-ne-sais-quoi-craft to it not found in other music.
