View Full Version : Make guitar heavier

By what I have been reading the RB guitar is lighter than the GH SG guitars which IMO were too light to begin with.

I found that on fast passages jumping between chords the guitar moved too much as it was so light.

This problem would be compounded even more on the RB guitar if it is lighter still.

I ended up opening up my original SG guitar and sticking some strips of steel inside the case and neck to make it heavier and balance it our better.

Now I find it plays much better as it stays still as I move my hands around.

It can't be that hard to out some weights in it during manufacture.

Hell since I read the pick guard was removable you could even go as far as making the weights clip in behind the pick guard that way those that don't want them could remove them.

I suppose adding weight to the guitars would up shipping and manufacturing costs....which every company I assume would avoid if possible

Eh, If it's too light just crack it open like you did you SG controllers, My xplorer didn't feel too light for me, if the strat does i'll probably open it up and put in some weights myself.

Q.E.D.

Why would they add weights for you, especially when the bundle will have 2 instruments and a mic and packing material already. Like you said, it's easy for a user to add weight, so just do that.

Haven't you solved your own problem in the post?

What if people don't want a heavier guitar or aren't bothered (like me)?

It'd be a lot easier and cheaper for individuals to weight their own guitar, rather than weight every single one they manufacture.

Q.E.D.

That wasn't QED.

It's good to know that it shouldn't be too hard to add some weight, if needed. But I agree that it should be up to the user.

Larkspeed, don't you want your kitten to be able to play, too? There's no way s/he is playing the weighted guitar in your avatar image.

Why have weights added by the manufacturer?

Simple in order to add weight myself I have to open it up and invalidate the warranty.

it's not a matter of making it heavy like a real guitar just a bit heavier which will make no difference at all to shipping. (I added 160 grams to the SG)

And as for should be up to the user yes it should which is why I said they could put them behind the removable pick guard that way anyone who wants it lighter can just pop the weights out.

But never mind It's just my opinion and I was just giving it people can like the idea or hate it it's up to them

Now that's not necessarily true is it? Add them under the pick guard unless there is no room. Besides, the warranty isn't lifetime. Surely you can wait 30-90 days before modding your gear.

I'm confident that I won't screw anything up, so my Strat will be getting a fresh coat of paint relatively quick.

Now to just decide on my design!

I believe it was less than 48 hours before I voided the warranty on my 360 X-plorer. That's mostly because I was irritated with the tiny neck. After playing the Fender, I'm not sure that I'll need to void my warranty right off the bat. It felt pretty solid IMO.

I wouldn't mind making a Frankenstrat though. Van Halen rocks!

It might actually be in the game now that I think about it.

Good point, since we're already pretty sure they're going to include their other brands, it would seem logical that they would have EVH guitars too. Let us all pray that there are no Hello Kitty guitars though!

Oh come now, if you get yourself a Jimi Hendrix Fender you'll just get all excited and set it on fire. Then what will you play?
