Try listening to juke box hero...or the sabbath pack. If mississippi queen almost made you puke, get ready to vomit so hard you puke your spine up.

Hey Hey Hey!
The Black Sabbath covers are good.
Juke Box Hero is ok.
The worst is probably Heroes.

Sabbath sounds all right. I think GH3's Paranoid sounds better though... more like Ozzy.
I think the Iron Maiden Number of the Beast cover sounds pretty bad. Again, GH3 has the far superior version.
Fortunately, covers aren't a problem with most Rock Band songs being masters.

There are a few covers that aren't that great, but really the worst one is matter of preference - as in, the songs that you listen to more regularly will stand out as poor covers. I don't notice a big difference in Beetlebum or the Sabbath tracks, because those are songs I don't listen to much outside of the game, but Heroes stuck out instantly since I've heard the original so much. A song like Action, which I've barely heard at all outside of the game, doesn't even register.

It's going to be whichever of the covered songs is your favorite. For me, it's Ten Speed (of God's Blood and Burial) but for everyone else I'm sure it's different.

TSoGB&B was a great cover. I still have trouble telling it apart.

2nded. that Hard to Handle cover made me cry. it's so f'ing bad. it breaks my heart. i want to have that song in rock band so bad, but i can't because the cover is so terrible. i refuse to buy it.

I'd say it's a tie between Hard to Handle and Beetlebum...with the vocals ruining it in both cases. I actually think the Sabbath and Rush covers are pretty good (and this is coming from a big Rush fan).

Fortunate Son.... I didn't realize that was a cover the first time I played it. I vote for Paranoid. The guy doesn't sounds close to Ozzy. Oddly enough, the rest of the Black Sabbath covers are fine by me.
Oops... forgot Juke Box Hero. That one takes it. I don't even enjoy the song in Rock Band the cover is so bad.

Wow. I dont really even notice. Probably because I don't listen to the originals. The only one I did notice was Ten Speed but it's not like I care that it's a cover. Sure the master would be better but it's better than not having the song in the game.

I thought "Hard to Handle" sounded as good as it could without being a master.....Its hard to emulate that kind of voice....much like why everyone disliked the "Rush" covers.
Some voices are near impossible to copy.

I'd have to say the worst cover is "Dead on Arrival". The singer sounds awful, the instruments sound like they're played by kids, and...
what's that? It's not a cover? Oh, then nevermind.

They were kids!
And still act like it now...
I'd say Tom Sawyer is super bad.
Heroes is also bad...
I love both of those songs sooooo much too.
That Heroes cover is worse than Kasabian's rendition.

Worst covers are Number of the Beast and Ten Speed. The guitar's diddnt sound like the orginals or even close to them.

My problem with Hard to Handle isn't so much that the voice is different, but that it completely lacks the energy a song like this needs. The cover singer sounds like he 'phoned it in'.

Blurs lead singer is damon albarn and when he sings he has a strong london accent and in the cover it sounds nothing like him.

The Bowie covers were bad vocal wise. Thank god Moonage Daydream was a master track.
I think Number of the Beast and Tom Sawyer definatley qualify as worst covers, vocals sucked hard. GH3 was lucky to be given a master track.
Run to the Hills wasn't too pretty, but acceptable as a cover.
Imagine if they tried to do Metallica covers.

Mississippi Queen is horrible. Singer isnt even close.
The Number of the Beast. lolwut
Limelight and Tom Sawyer have below average vocals, but still are fun.
It's Number of the Beast, no questions asked. The singer's voice cracks during the song. Well, that's for listenability anyway. The cover of Heroes is probably the worst in terms of faithfulness to the orignal, but I still found it decently listenable.

ROck Band's cover's are pretty good, but the worst I've ever heard was Heart Shaped Box. I like to turn the vocals off for that one.

The Rush cover and the Bowie covers are pretty aweful.
my personal most hated cover though is Ballroom Blitz.
I like the cover of War Pigs though.
Last train to Clarksville was a bit tough to get used to as well.

I'd say worst goes to Limelight which isn't a good imitation, and doesn't sound that good.
Then Tom Sawyer, Number of the Beast, Hard to Handle and both Bowie songs are pretty bad too.
Other than that I don't have issues with the covers too much. I mean, I know some of them aren't quite accurate, but I don't care too much as long as it goes well with the music, and doesn't sound like the cover singer is trying too hard to horribly imitate the original singer.

TSoGB&B was a great cover. I still have trouble telling it apart.
Isn't it easier to not do stupid acronyms and just say Ten Speed?? People always abbreviate stuff and it gets annoying, especially when you don't know what it stands for.
I think Ten Speed wasn't a great cover, but it's also extremely hard to get Claudio's voice down. Coheed is one of my favorite bands, so I can tell apart very easily. I know it's hard to get anyone's voice down, but Claudio's voice is very unique.
Bruce Dickinson's voice is also very unique, and I listen to Iron Maiden a lot (coincidentally one of Coheed's major influences) and I really dislike the Number of the Beast cover.
I agree with other posters, if you know the original very well, the cover will probably sound like garbage to you.

Oddly enough, I don't have this problem with the songs I know best (the Rush songs and Ten Speed). Wouldn't be able to say why not, to be honest...I just have too much fun playing the songs to notice, I guess.

Beetlebum makes me want to puke all over. Number of the Beast, "Heroes", Juke Box Hero, Mississippi Queen are all bad, but I usually don't mind too much since the songs are really great, and I never really listened to any of them other than NotB and "Heroes" before playing the game.
But really, as a huge Blur fan, I found the Beetlebum cover to be a slap in the face. The guy who sung it didn't even have an English accent!

I'm amazed no-ones mentioned Train Kept a Rollin'. The vocal and guitar sound all wrong to the degree that I find it distracting to play. Alos Beetlebum is pretty bad. it's not just the vocals though, it's the guitar too. the mix isn't right and it rarely matches the sound of the original.

Huh... I thought that cover was spot on.
I think most of them are good enough to not kill the song. Beetlebum was off, but I still enjoy it. Same goes for the Rush songs, Ten Speed, The Black Sabbath covers (they are great in my opinion)...
The only ones that really diminish my enjoyment are Heroes and Number of the Beast. I thought Run to the Hills was quite good, don't know why this one wasn't.

I don't really DL covers. I liked War Pigs, one of my favorite songs of all time, so I had to have that one.
The other covers just don't "sound" right to me. So I pass on covers.

Paranoid really jumped out at me when I first played the game as being........different. It just doesn't sound quite right on the vocals.
Mississippi Queen didn't bother me at all. It seemed faithful enough to me.
The Rush and Iron Maiden covers leave a little to be desired though (here's to hoping for master tracks for these bands in the future).
The absolute worst cover in the game though is easily Juke Box Hero. That song is covered so badly I don't think I've played it more than a couple of times because it bothers me.

What exactly are you guys talking about when you say that the covers are bad? I think a cover can be good without the singer sounding like the artist at all. I thought the Karaoke Revolution covers were good and they sound a lot less like the original artists than in Rock Band. I see covers from bands when I go to converts and they don't even try to sound like the other people.. I think those are good.
I went through this thread and I listened to the ones pointed out and the original versions and I can tell that the singers aren't the original singers, but they sound remarkably similar. The only huge difference I saw was in The Number of the Beast yells.
To those saying the covers make you want to puke; What are some of your examples of good covers?

First off, I think Mississippi Queen sounds MUCH BETTER than the original, especially the vocals (clearer) and the amount of distortion on the lead guitar (less). I'll agree that it doesn't sound just like the original, but it does sound better.
I go with Juke Box Hero as the worst (Lou Gramm is too good to be treated that way), Number of the Beast is dreadful, and the Rush covers are bad too.

Fully agreed.
In fact, I'd go as far as to say that some covers are better than the original because of different interpretations of what the song should sound like.
Look at Sabbath/Paranoid - 3rd Strike (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3rd_Strike) covered it, and their version is badass.
Jim Korthe's voice lends itself very well to brutal screaming, and the song all in all is a lot heavier than the original, and I greatly prefer 3rd Strike's version.
To each his own, I guess.

5. "Last Train to Clarksville" (slightly off, but nails the spirit)
4. "Ten Speed"
3. "Number of the Beast" (so un-epic, it's not even funny)
2. "Heroes" (BORING)
1. "Beetlebum" (Damon Albarn is not one to be imitated. As is Bowie and Dickinson.)

People have said that Train Kept' A Rollin was bad but compared to the original its a great cover.
Most of the covers are pretty good. You have to remember its a person imitating a rockstar, it'll never be perfect. So taking that into account, i listen to covers like Number of the Beast or Tom Sawyer and feel like its a really good job. If Harmonix could find somebody that sounded the same that person would most likely have their own band somewhere.
The cover of Mississippi Queen is much different than the original but it does sound better so its definitely an upgraded version. However.........
THE WORST COVER WITHOUT A DOUBT IS JUKE BOX HERO!!
The original is a great song and the cover is HORRIBLE! the sound quality is terrible and the guitar solo is changed so much it sounds nothing like the original. Definitely a dissapointment:(

I agree with those who say the worst cover is usually the song you know best. I know "Hard to Handle"'s original version very well and therefore I think the cover stinks. I barely knew "Ten Speed" and I think the cover is good. It seems like an obvious trend.
