Wow more than half of that wasn't even alternative or grunge. MC5? Blondie? Bowie? I don't get it

I also find this flawed, I'm a big Bowie fan and Velvet Underground fan but I know for a fact both are by no means known for Alternative Rock or Grunge, I'm positive they're up there since they're influences. But still point is influence doesn't mean the same thing as actual artist. Hell a lot of these are pretty off, for instance Television is post-punk!

That fact alone shows they're using influences. I can understand if they mean if the music is Alternative as in stuff different from the norm which would account for the broad range on the list but they're associating it with Grunge! That would cement the fact they would mean Alternative Rock then. Most messed up list EVER.

^Buster, Punk is a form of Alternative, as is Post-Punk and other Punk subgenres.

^It brings up a good question then, as I wouldn't see a band like The Clash (we can all agree they're punk) as Alternative, but I don't see how Punk would equal to conventional Alternative Rock unless you meant it as a broad term. They should've just named it The Greatest Alternative Artists and Bands and left Grunge out of the title as it implies it's the type of Alternative Rock we'd associate with the late 80's, 90's and now.

Punk was never an alternative it was THE alternative before there was such a thing. Anti hippy, anti love, anti disco, anti arena rock. Alternative is a prototype of the 90's when other bands came out that gained national/world attention that didn't quite fit a particular niche.

no, alt rock is just forms of punk

punk is one of the biggest genres

i would say punk classic rock and metal are the biggest with alt rock being a huge part of punk

Alternative was started by the Velvets in '66 or so. Punk was started by Iggy Pop/MC5. Punk is a form of alternative!!!

redo the list! blondie was not punk or grunge or altern she was 80's pop which is now pretty much r&b. bowie come on anyone who knows alittle about classic music knows he was never close to those styles.

Pretty good list. I wouldn't consider a bunch of those alternative of grunge, though.

Weezer, Beck, and the Chili Peppers should be higher. Pearl Jam should be lower. Bands 51-100 that should be top 50 are Modest Mouse and Depeche Mode.

Blondie was part of the 80's New Wave scene. Basically the term before "Alternative" started getting thrown around.

And also Stone Temple Pilots. I don't get how they're so low.

The top 10 does kick ass though. Some of my favorite bands of all time in there.

Some bands that need to be moved up IMO are:

Bjork
Alice In Chains
Fugazi
Massive Attack

It seems The Sisters Of Mercy have been omitted from that list, how strange!
