View Full Version : HMX: RB guitar on PS3 work with PS2 GH?

This is a question for the Harmonix folks. Sorry if it's been asked before.
What I'm wondering is if while messing around on the PS3 you happened to load up Guitar Hero 1 or 2 PS2 version and tested the Rock Band guitar with it? Was it compatible? Did everything work as it should?
A follow up: Did you happen to test the Rock Band PS2 version on the PS3 using the PS3 guitar? Did that work?
There could be a couple of expensive purchases riding on this. Thanks!

the first question has been asked a few times, but never answered. the 2nd question doesnt really make much sense...as if you had a ps3 it would make no sense to buy the ps2 version. but it has been confirmed that the ps3 instruments will work on the ps2.

Just read an interview in which the GH3 people stated that the GH3 guitar on PS3 will not work with the PS2 GH2's. Rock Band is my only hope!

My guess would be it depends where the fault lies if it's hardware related then there is no chance that the Rock band controller would work with GH2 on the PS3, RO developed the hardware for the GH games and if they can't get their Les Paul working with them then HMX wouldn't either, if however the fault lies with the game code itself then maybe HMX could do something, i dunno HMX haven't said anything in this regard so we will have to wait to see what happens, to be honest i have come to terms with the fact i may never be able to play GH2 again but the upside is i have rock band to look forward to instead.

I'm kinda hoping this is one of the things clarified in one of the pre-GH3 launch announcements, cause if it does work with GH1/2 on the PS3, then thats a good piece of info to get some of the "unsure-of-which-game-to-get" PS3 owners. I know it's a small group but a few more people coming to the dark side is better than none.

The simple solution is to make the GH1 and GH2 songs available on Rockband's downloadable content.

For the price of what we paid for them both originally no doubt.
Or better yet, provide proof of ownership and get the downloadable content for free...

That would be difficult... and I don't really want ALL the old songs anyway. I'd love to choose a few though.

Meh, I'd play em all, I get so bored playing the last 2 tiers I go back and replay all the other songs eventually. (except for synchronicity II, christ on a crutch that song drives me nuts) It's better to have lots of options. Of course, if the DLC for RB is efficient and cheap, then balls to gh1 and 2. I'll just play new RB stuff and dig out the ole ps2 for good time rememories.

hopefully the strat will have the backwards compatability because with the new ps3 models overtaking the market and sonys announcement on ditching BC, doesnt look good for any future peripheral development for ps2 guitars for the ps3.

yeah but they're not going to ditch the couple million of us that have sonys WITH the emotion chip built in. That was the biggest feature for me when I bought it, don't know why they would get rid of it.

The BC is only "not available" in the 40GB Models. The 80GB still has it via software emulation.

that would be the coolest thing!
but not all the songs would work, like YYZ doesn't have vocals.
But it would be cool to be able to play it without singing.

i dunno, im reading between the lines. if theyre saying it's "not important" then why would you expect them to continue to support the couple million that have it. from here on out id expect the masses wont have it.

Umm, because they put it in there in the first place. They can't just drop support of it now with millions of systems available. That's like saying, "Sorry guys, blu ray isn't working out like we anticipated, all of our new systems come with hd-dvd and all the games come on hd-dvd from now on, apologies to all you blu ray owners that now have a useless system." Don't forget that they have supported their defunct technologies for years beyond viable economical reason before too, *cough*beta*cough*
don't get me wrong, I loved beta, it was the ****. Way better than VHS imho...
Lousy porn distributors and their cost cutting...

they basically said they were just going to try and make sure the new ps2 games that are still being released will be BC on the ps3. they have no intentions of fixing older titles. and that's why im saying dont count on sony to do a GH BC patch.
your analogy to the blu ray player is a bit over the top. the ps3 is a blu ray player. the backwards compatability with ps and ps2 games was never pushed as a selling point, more like a bonus feature. that was made obvious as they scaled back to software emulation, and now getting rid of it completely.

I don't think it's over the top at all. It was definitely pushed as a selling point or else they wouldn't have even mentioned it in their sales pitch. Either way, they don't even have to release a patch for backwards compatibility as it works fine right now. It's simply the guitar that isn't compatible with the usb/psx converter.
