View Full Version : No Beatles Songs Announced Yet?

So far Rock Band has a great song list but I'm dying to see a Beatles song in the game. The Beatles are one of the best bands of all time and there are so many songs by them that would be fun to play in Rock Band. Helter Skelter, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, etc. So far though they have not announced any Beatles songs yet. I would love if they added a Beatles song but the chances are beginning to look slim because they will only announce 10 more songs not counting bonus songs. I think it would be unfair not to have a Beatles song considering they have Gimmie Shelter by The Rolling Stones.

I think to have the Beatles would be a major selling point and milestone. That's a hell of an achievement. And there are alot of fun songs to play.

But in my list of bands I hope make the big ten The Beatles really aren't one of them. Primus, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, Hendrix, The Cranberries, Led Zepplin, I mean I could probably name a good twenty bands before I hit The Beatles.

Although I'll take some DLC.

The ownership of the Beatles Catalog is a mess and a half. iTunes can't even get Beatles songs for download yet, it's gonna be a long while before Rock Band can. I'd love to see it as much as the next guy, though.

You have Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson to blame for that.

The Wu-Tang Clan recently got permission (or so they say) to sample While My Guitar Gently Weeps for their new song. Maybe, possibly, perhaps this is a turning point in regards to licensing some of the Beatles' songs. And then there was the whole I Am Sam soundtrack, from a few years back, full of Beatles covers.

I'm not really sure why some bands don't want their stuff on iTunes (if that's even the case), such as the Beatles, Led Zep, and, until somewhat recently, the Rolling Stones. Maybe the idea of inspiring people by letting them play your song on plastic instruments will help convince some of those bands to allow their songs in the game. Who knows.

That article is somewhat dated (1995). Since then, ATV Music Publishing (the company Jackson bought out back in the 80s) has merged with Sony, so Jackson isn't in complete control of the Beatles songs anymore. Sony and Jackson each own 50%. On top of that, with Jackson losing money all over the place, its possible that Sony might acquire half of Jackson's current share, changing the balance to 25/75 for Jackson/Sony. I think.

That's the last I'd ever read about all this. So in theory, Sony owns the majority rights. Maybe. ::Shrug::

On the topic of artists in general being lame about liscensing, it's a weird topic. A lot of people/musicians view liscensing their music to things like this as "selling out." Plus I'm sure there are other various reasons they're timid about it. Personally, I hope they all get over themselves and let us enjoy their music on his new platform that's been provided to us.

If nothing else, I never thought Metallica would come around. If they can do it, anything is possible.
