View Full Version : One reason why Guitar Hero: World Tour will outsell Rock Band ( This one or the 2nd )

The name. Everyone knows of Guitar Hero - fan or not. Rock Band on the other hand, unless you're a gamer, you've likely never heard of it. Seriously, I think Guitar Hero IV ( Whatever it's called ) will blow Rock Band away in sales - for shame. Harmonix came first. They made the guitar peripheral popular in AMERICA, and the drums. Now Activision is stealing it. People think competition is good like this - how so? Would you rather have one plastic drumset or two? Buy DLC for one game or fork it out for two different games?
As much as I would want to try out Guitar Hero IV - I say I'm sticking with Rock Band.

Bad games don't outsell GOOD games...if someone came along and made a "better" GTA it would outsell GTA...main problem here for GH...the makers of RB made GH...GH3 was made by different people...and most think that it sucks. What makes you think GH4 will be any better? More craptastic instrument? More overplayed songs? Less DLC than RB? I mean look at Activisions track record compaired to EA's...When did they last make a GOOD Tony Hawk game? My money will always be with RB, first music game I've ever owned and probly the last! :)

i think a game doesn't need to be good for it to sell. It's all about name recognition. I think a majority of people who play games, probably don't cruise around on these types of forums and i think the general public who play games casually or not are stupid and ill-informed about video games (which is why peole sometimes say rock band is a rip off of gh, which it's not), much like when it comes to voting in politics, and yes GH: World tour will outsell rock band easily.

Rock Band 4 Life. Guitar Hero 4 is just a Rip-off of RB. It will be nothing more than that. And the only thing better about the drums seems to be the symbols things it has. But $10 says they break easier than the pads on the drums we all know and love now.

I still dont get all the GH hate. I find it kind of sad we're all acting like elitist *****es because another game is actually trying to fix what they screwed up. the biggest thing everyone one these forums fail to realize is that Neversoft knows what they did wrong with GUitar Hero 3, and they are trying to make it better. As well do you think people would really care about Gh4 if it was just the same thign again? they needed to change it up. I dont know why everyones so pissed. Im actually excited for GH4.
The ONLY thing i really hate is that they purposely went out of their way to make a 6 button drum kit so it wont be compatible with the RB drums which means im going to have to buy ANOTHER freakin drum kit for these stupid music games. Its getting to the point where i should just get az real ****ing drum kit and guitar than having 8 damn plastic controllers...
I mean i read up on GH4's features and it looks like its awesome. Personally yea i didnt want to like it cause i like RB so much mroe, but i cant deny what neversoft is doing sounds like it will be great. The thing is,stop acting like elitest *******s. its just a god damn video game. its also a buisness. and both companies are trying to make money

Unless GH4 is compatible with Rockband instruments, it will not do well.
I, for one refuse to use those one step up from crib toy ukeleles that GH uses.
Sold that Fisher/Price garbage a long time ago for pennies on the dollar.
I dont have room for 2 drum kits on risers in my frign living room.
I am an adult, I dont like cartoony rock and roll.
It seems funny that the music on GH4 seems to appeal to adults more, but the graphics and instruments are so childlike.
For consistancy they should feature Hannah Montana type songs, and boy bands, to match the instruments and graphics.
Mature adults want full size instuments so as not to look so ridiculous while playing these types of games.
Guitar hero died back in November, they are trying to revive it now.

Names don't move $200 products...sorry...but that's just how it is. While Rock Band is selling just fine, the only reason it's not selling at GH numbers is because of the price and you can rest assured that a drums/guitar/mic/game bundle of Guitar hero:world tour, will cost $200.
There is no bigger fan of this genre of games than I, but I'm not really interested in GHWT. While I don't really care for GH3, I have nothing against the game if its' a good game. I'm just not going to invest the money into another game that offers NOTHING over the one I currently have. New drum set? big F'n deal, the one I have works fine. New guitar? another Big F'n deal.. I have two already.. and some old GH2 guitars and a few real ones.. Songs by a few "cool" bands? I"m not dropping $200 for a few songs by a few bands, that's stupid. Battle of the bands? Only cool if they ever actually say whether or not it's online band vs. band. From teh trailer it looks like it's local band vs. band which is MEH. Online Band world tour type mode? Rock Band will get this eventually and I've yet to see any real confirmation that GHWT will have it. The trailer highlighted a lot of things and this was NOT one of them? Oh and last but not least, create-a-song? This is pointless. THe only people who are really interested in this are people who haven't bothered to use any of the similar free software that allows you to do the same thing and has been available for decades and don't know how difficult it is to atually make something that sounds good. 90% of what people make is going to sound like a room full of R2-D2's jerkin off... I like real music, no thanks.

I don't how accurate that is.
I read the Newsweek or CNN article/interview with Harmonix, and it sounded like Red Octane approached Harmonix and asked them to make a guitar-controller game. So they both started Guitar Hero, and it sounds like Red Octane had the idea and Harmonix had the know-how to make it.
Then it seems Harmonix had the band idea and Red Octane wasn't on board with that, so they split up.
It sounds to me like the two companies together are what created the guitar controller success. Hopefully they don't oversaturate the market with too many competing products that do the same things and kill it off.

No offense to you, but I think that all of the instruments, including Rock Band's instruments, look ridiculous. The drum controller looks absolutey appauling for Rock Band! Four pads on a cheap metal/plastic stand that rattles apart when you move it? Add on to that a bass pedal that is so flimsy that it breaks in the majority of sets...
While the strat might look better than the les paul, the reliability of the les paul makes me want to use it more. I think the same would be said about the GHIV drums... plus they look better. I think all of these instruments look like garbage because they just put paint into the plastic so it ends up looking plasticky (for lack of a better word). If the instruments were overpainted they wouldn't look as bad. The strat definately doesn't look that much better than the les paul that I would use it over the les paul, though.
As long as I can use my Omega pedal for GHIV, I'm sure I'll at least give it a try.

Well I can tell you, if GH4 lives up to the press release (http://kotaku.com/5010423/guitar-hero-world-tour-the-press-release), it is going to be much better than RB on the Wii, the most popular, and social casual gamer console.

There are a lot of people that don't. A large group of parents have only heard of Guitar Hero. And those parents are going to be buying their kids $200 GH4 bundles instead of Rock Band bundles.
Even in addition to that I know plenty of people that own GH and have no clue what Rock Band is. Most of those people are girls or younger kids, but that doesn't change the fact that there are tons of people out there that have heard of GH but never Rock Band.

I agree but sad thing is Guitar Hero 3 is destroying Rock Band in sales as we speak,as of January GH has becomest the fastest $1 billion franchise in gaming history. They outsold RB by 3 times the amount just during the holiday season alone, and will continue to distance itself with GH:Aerosmith and GH4

If GHIV outsells RB2 or whatever, it really doesn't matter to me. I prefer RB, and that's where my dollars will go (and do go). Rock Band provides a better overall experience for me, and even though it was interesting to hear Lenny Kravitz in the trailer and see the new drum kit in action - meh. I'll pass and stick with Rock Band. I don't need to shell out more money for more instruments.

GHIV will do well with or without the extra instruments. Those who have Rock Band, referring to those have the PS3/360 will probably buy the game only since most will probably not want to shell out more money for a second set while others, mainly the Wii audience will eat up GHIV like nobodies business, especially considering RB on Wii is a joke.
Harmonix/EA/MTV needs to step up to the plate and promote the crap out of RB this summer prior to GHIV's release. They need to grow their userbase fast before GHIV eats them up.

Konami created the first drumming game, Drummania. It was popular in arcades but there was also a home version, I didn't actually own it, but it came out 8 or 10 years ago (somewhere around there)
So if you want to get technical, Activision is stealing the drum controller from Harmonix, who had stolen the drum controller from Konami...

I've dealt with Neversoft and Activision a bunch when i used to play THPS (tony hawks pro skater) games online.(ps2)
In my opinion, they are very lazy and greedy.
In example: ....
I've watched the THPS games die out, because they tried to appeal to casual gamers, who are completely oblivious that they are buying, with terrible half-ass gimmicks.
They even started releasing games once a year just because they knew people would buy them.
I seriously think that if they would have listened just to even one little thing to our community had to say that the THPS games would still be awesome.
I honestly have to say that they are probably going to take a huge advantage over Rock Band with GHIV because they have Guitar Hero in their name now.
I believe most people have no idea that the people that made the actual GOOD Guitar Hero games are now the people that make rock band. And those people will lean towards buying the more familiar Guitar Hero over Rock Band.
If this new Guitar Hero World Tour is any good at all I doubt that they will make anything as good or better. I can see they will most likely do with what they did with THPS and suck every penny out of the mindless casual gamers with dumb gimmicks. Making each new release worse and worse until they are to the point where they can not make any more money.
They have already started with the gimmicks in Guitar Hero... Guitar Hero Aerosmith......
It will just go downhill from there.
the end. lol

Hate to mention this...
But GH IV is giving us everything we've ever asked for from Rock Band...
Online "Battle of the Bands" (kinda like online World Tour Mode)
Wii DLC
Better Drum Kit
Create Your Own Songs
Freestyle Modes..
So guess who's delivering on what we've been asking for? If a company is delivering what the consumers want, I have no problem patronizing that company.
We had asked for online BWT/Battle of the Bands modes forever and all we got were excuses because it was too hard, etc. Then how come Neversoft is doing it in a game thats coming out THIS YEAR if it was that hard?
Sorry, but Neversoft isnt that bad of a software company...while yes, the bosses were stupid and that last tier completely insane, interviews have shown us that they've listened to the complaints and learned their lesson.
Red Octane makes some of the best peripherals out there. Sorry, but the Les Paul is a lot more solid than the Strat...and it didnt break.
While I'd love to see Harmonix pull some sort of mega-patch that would make Rock Band compete with Guitar Hero World Tour, I doubt thats going to happen any time soon.
A lot of us decided to learn to play real drums after playing Rock Band...and you dont know how hard it is going back to that clack-attack drum set after playing the real (albeit mine are electronic/midi drums) thing. Now GH IV is going to have velocity sensitive drums WITH Cymbal pads! Im definitely looking forward to that. No having to cut circles out of felt and sticking them on your drums in order to make them function the way they should have out of the box.
All I know is Harmonix needs to do something to compete...and do it fast. Im now as excited about Guitar Hero World Tour as I was about Rock Band last year...because guess who's taking the concept and adding more innovation to it?
Making your own songs also = more value for your money. This also means up and coming bands could possibly upload their tunes and give us more songs to play.
Im not trying to be disrespectful to Harmonix, I love that company, but I'm still a consumer who likes good rhythm games...I just hope they have some sort of secret weapon.

Yea....I'm gonna say that RB has the best game soundtrack...ya know that and GTA...
Oh and you should GOOGLE up a little, Red Octane was the publisher...
"RedOctane is an American electronic entertainment company perhaps best known for publishing the Guitar Hero series. RedOctane became a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision in 2006."
"Harmonix is best known as the developer of Rock Band as well as the original developer of the Guitar Hero series up until Guitar Hero 3."

But how can you say Activision is lazy? To me, lazy is doing a straight port of your game to a platform and not even trying to use any of its features (i.e. Rock Band on the Wii).
Activision got online play going with GHIII on the Wii.
Activision will allegedly get DLC going with GH4 on the Wii.

I love when people tell out and out lies to try and back up their point...
They've said the game will have "band vs. band' but it has not been confirmed that it will be ONLINE. The trailer mentions nothing about it being online and regardless that is NOTHING like Online band world tour. They're also 6 months away from releasing their product. Lets see what they actually put out before we heap praises on them. What they want to do and what they actually deliver could be very different.
You say that "we've asked for create-a-song", but I've been on these forums for quite a while and I don't see any mass numbers of people asking for this. It's pretty much the same 20-30 people over and over again. These are people who could have been doing similar things for years using tons of freely available and BETTER software, but didn't, because they lack the focus or patience to do so (same thing for playing a real instrument). They want what they don't understand simply because it sounds cool and they've given no thought to the difficulty involved in actually creating something that's more than a bunch of badly arranged guitar loops. As someone who has used plenty of similar software over the years, with much better control (mouse vs. controller) it's difficult to make things that sound good. 99% of what is made out of this program will be total junk.
Better drum kit is just speculating. You can be guaranteed that people will beat the **** out of it and it WILL break because that's what people do. Until you see it and sit down at it and beat on it yourself, don't try to say that it's in any way "better".
Freestyle modes? What so you can bang on drums or hit a button and it will play a guitar loop for you? It's just another gimmick that 1% of the people who buy the game will actually care about. It's also not something that "most" people have asked for..
Harmonix doesn't need a secret weapon....

Yep, Tony has a ****ty music game and he makes ****TY bikes! I got one recently and the god dang tie fell off on me mid ride! Mutha ****in Tony Goddamn Hawk!....
"A Tony Hawk Bicycle?
I can remember when Tony Hawk was still an unknown in the skateboard world. Of course, he’s become a something of an icon in the 20 or so years since I last rode a Powell Peralta. And his clean cut image has done wonders for skating, not to mention his eleventy billion dollars in video game sales. But I recently read about his newest venture, the Tony Hawk HuckJam series bicycle.
I’m sure there is going to be some sort of freestyle BMX bike, aimed squarely at taking dollars out of Dave Mirra’s pocket. From the article, it appears that we’ll see a cheap one showing up at the X-Marts, and a more expensive line showing up at sporting goods stores. I’m not seeing any mention of bike shops though.
While I hate to sound negative, this smacks loudly of a big checkbook looking to pimp Tony’s name. Sure, he’s gotta pay the bills and feed his family. But are we really to expect something new and different? They are promising “innovative paint finishes, new types of frames, and cutting edge decal and graphics packages”, but that sounds like marketing-speak for slapping some new artwork on mass-produced Chinese product.
I can only hope it’s something more than that. Credibility can’t be bought or sold, but is easily lost."
Oh yea...It's lost....

I dont get the bashing either.. I started playing GH on the 360, so was the second one. I got GH3 and loved it as much as the second, but got rock band the day it came out (today!!!!) Im stuck at work till half 7 tonight, but gonna be playing all weekend! If there is a song I fancy playing on GH then ill stick it in. Ill probably get GH4 (but prob not Aerosmith!) but again will likely to come back to Rock Band as and when I want to play particular songs!
It would be great for them all to be compatible, but thats life! If you cant afford all DLC, instruments etc etc (and I know I sure cant) then Im just gonna take a gamble on which instruments and DLC I want.
There.. No biggie, just my opinion.. hope to see you online! :D

They've said the game will have "band vs. band' but it has not been confirmed that it will be ONLINE. The trailer mentions nothing about it being online and regardless that is NOTHING like Online band world tour.
Excuse me for stating the obvious... but how in Hell are you going to have Band vs. Band if it's NOT online? Are you going to hook up 8 controllers and 2 TVs to one console? Get out the ol' XBox System Link cable?
The only way for Band vs. Band to be feasible is online. It's not "confirmed" but it's common sense.
