It's nice, BluEyes -- but it lacks the multiple voice work I love in classical guitar

This is my favorite classical guitarist: John Williams

Where classical guys truly shine for me is a) tone (with Williams every note is struck so cleanly -- full tone, no buzz), but b) more importantly playing multiple lines simultaneously, keeping them clean and balanced. Watch the harmonic work at around 1:30.

There are lots of fast guys in jazz and flamenco, but it's the intricacy of classical work I keep coming back to.

Also -- have you seen the movie Crossroads that has Steve Vai in it? Always struck me as funny that the Macchio character wins the duel at the end by going back to his classical training. Amazing, though, what Vai does playing that stuff with a pick -- but then that's a piece that's heavier on single note runs so it works.

This is actually how i discovered Steve Vai. In my opinion, it's his best work. BTW, he played all the guitar parts, classical shredding included.

Ry Cooder played the blues slide parts but the rest is Steve. You know -- my one complaint about the duel is that it has never been convincing to me that Steve's character (Jack Butler) couldn't play the piece -- I mean he fails just trying to bend a note!

Anyway, the same piece is played on the acoustic guitar at the start of the movie by William Kanengiser. The arrangement Steve used (I think he created it, not sure) for the duel works for picking. But like I said it's the multiple voice work that differentiates classical work for me.

BTW, I got turned on the Steve at a Zappa concert in '80, I think (may have been '79). I love him -- not just the technical brilliance, but the musical adventurousness and the showmanship.

Here's a taste of Kanengiser, FWIW:

Not the toughest piece, but it does illustrate the point about more than one thing going on at the same time. Really tough to do picking. EJ does some things like this that are pretty cool:

BTW, Steve Morse actually does play classical guitar. A sample:

There are a few guys who do have real classical training who've gone into rock. As far as I can tell, though, they had the stuff to be stars in rock, but not in classical. Don't think Steve would have stood out with the likes of Parkening, Williams, etc.

I have his "Bach: The Complete Lute Music on Guitar" LP. Very cool record.

Im pearsonaly not big on classical music. Some things like Bachs stuff I really like. His phrasing and melodys are very interesting

I just posted this because it was on the home page. I dident even like the shredding part. But I love the tone of the guitar. And those small licks make it perfect. The shredding I could do without.

Yea I've seen the crossroads battle. (That should have been in guitar hero lol) Once again im not really into all that stuff I mean it sounds cool and awesome but I wouldent really listen to it normaly
