Drum Question

Hi,

Just purchased the Xbox 360 instrument Kit in the UK. When using the drums I have noticed you need to hit the pads in the centre for them to register. If i hit them at the edges, on the bottom, top or side then it will not register. Is this normal ?

Just to add to my post, the model of my drums is the QM model. Any help would be great.
