...or will we always be tied to playing the songs they give us?

We wont be seeing any create your own music in Rock Band. It isn't completely out of the picture, but if anything we wont see something like that until Rock Band 2 or beyond.

According to Harmonix, it's still in the works. They aren't concentrating on it for launch, but it's still a possibility for the future.

..........whats the point in that? Why not just form a real band and do it that way.....? Isnt this the same argument as the people who think GH/RB should be "realistic" and actually teach u guitar? And dont give me the "but its too hard in real life, most people cant be bothered".....if you can be bothered to spend hours on a video game trying to make a song, I think you can spend hours on guitar lessons and do it in real life......

I dont see it as being a necessary or good addition to the game. I dont see how it would even work either, for the same reasons why a "guitar simulator" wouldnt work, 5 (or 10) buttons do not equal the amount of different notes and chords you can play on real guitar. Same goes for the 4 drum pads. The only way it would work is if you had some kind of editor and you edited the notes in some fashion to sound like different chords/drums/cymbals etc. But then it would just be like using a music program on the computer, and again, would be a bit pointless.

lots of points im in a band. I play out 3-5 times a month and love it. but to be honest I want them to do this so we can put our songs in the game haha. We did it with gh2 and a modded ps2. but rock band is going to be so much better lol.

I just hope that there's a way to share the music we create. I know it's not likely, but it would still be cool.

Wait, are you lot asking for a system that lets you put in songs (e.g. mp3s, m4as, etc) and then it lets you create your own note chart?
If thats the case, then it would never happen purely because it would make buying a new version of rock band pointless and DLC more so, even if some of you have good intentions and want to put mp3s of your own band playing songs, not everyone will limit themselves.

However, if youre suggesting that they should implement some kind of "sound creator" and mix it with a note chart creator, I stand by my post above, it wouldnt be that great an idea, still possible, but a little pointless.

Yeah, I don't think it'll ever happen. Harmonix has spent a lot of time, and especially money getting a good working relationship with record labels. If they released something that would allow people to create their own charts, they would lose the trust that they've worked so hard to get. Not to mention the lost DLC money.

If I had to guess, they would require the use of different tracks for the vocals, guitar, bass, drums, etc. However, I'm sure that people would find some way to get MP3s on there as well.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of having this feature just yet based on that fact. I don't think Harmonix would continue to talk about it unless they thought there was a feasible way to do this without upsetting the record lables. Harmonix hasn't let us down yet, so I've got faith in them.

Eh? But theres no way they can stop people just putting their enitre collections of artists on their versions of rock band, and thus the record companies, Harmonix, everyone misses out on a HELL OF A LOT OF MONEY. I dont think this will ever happen, as much as you might like to paint Harmonix or whoever as a "good company", they are just that, a company, they wouldnt do something stupid as providing DLC and then shooting themselves in the foot by letting everyone just put their own songs on for free.

No way will this go with the record companies and it just doesnt make sense at all, you may as well say "oh harmonix should give us all the game code so we can make our own Rock Band game"......whats the point in harmonix even being there if they are just going to let u lot make youre own content?

I think this talk of "harmonix said such and such" is only really about perhaps expandning the "play what you want" stuff thats already in there with the drum fills and the endings to songs and such. Allowing everyone to make custom songs is just going to kill the franchise.

I'm not sure what you mean there. Harmonix has actually stated that they are very interested in making these tools available. Whether or not it really makes sense to us, they are considering it, so they likely will have some sort of safeguards in place to prevent people from just putting any old tracks on there.

Wow, talk about digging up an old thread :P

I believe their official stance is not to include this feature in Rock Band. I want to say Kotaku or Joystiq had a big interview last week that talked about this. I'd find it, but I'm just on my way out the door.

Thanks. Hopefully they include it in part 2. It's the main reason I'd buy the game.

I've always hoped that one day, by the grace of God, my band and I could finally record a song and send it in to Harmonix to see if they'd think we were worthy enough to become DLC. Of course, they wouldn't. I'm certain that if they let other bands (more deserving bands) do so, though, it'd spread the word about said bands and bring them out of the underground. Plus, they wouldn't have to worry about scrambling for songs from famous artists every week.

I do think I remember Alex or someone getting asked about this in an interview way back, though, and I think he said they wanted to, but couldn't because of issues with lawyers or some such thing like that. Unfortunate.
