View Full Version : I went from going to pre-order RB to GHIII...

I'm still skeptical about some aspects of Rock Band. I'll have to wait till it comes out and get everyone else's opinion on it.
There is only one thing I'm worried about... well... two I guess. I don't like the hammer ons in the game. From the videos I've seen, it looks very hard to distinguish which is and which isn't. And now recently I'm a bit worried about the difficulty for guitar, since people seem to be saying it's easy on Expert. But that isn't really a big deal. That's what GHIII is for. Needless to say, I'll be getting this. It will be awesome, but those are the only two things that I had to say. Besides, now I don't have to spend $175. That's the beauty of Christmas. :p

The hammer-ons are different, but the size difference between the notes is pretty easy to distinguish. And, yes, the guitar will be easier on expert... I'm not too worried 'bout that though. I'm getting GHIII, and I'll probably play drums and/or vocals in RB. And price? I don't have to pay $169.99, that's the beauty of friends :D

I find myself a bit undecided too, I like RockBand's harware and price but I'm not so sure about the songs. And let's face it the songs are a big deal to enjoy the game. It seems like the songs that GH3 have match better my music taste. So at this point am kinda sitting back and waiting too. I might go to one of their events when they come to town though. That might just do for me. Who knows...

I've heard that the difference in size of HO/PO are really easy to see when you are actually playing the game. They are fairly easy to tell the difference between in videos too.
As for the guitar parts, its like what you said, thats kinda what GH III is for. Rock Band is more about the full Band experience, so you have to sacrifice some guitar difficulty at points for the benefit of the rest of the band. I think there will be a few somewhat difficult songs in Rock Band, but anyone that could get through GH I and GH II I don't think will have much of a problem with Rock Band from what I hear.
There is always DLC also which will allow people who want some guitar heavy songs to be able to get them. Rock Band itself is basically a platform from which any person who owns it can basically make it the game they want it to be, at least that is how I feel about it.

ya, those 2 things you mentioned are non-issues for me.
Rockband will be the bigger and better game overall.

no worrie I have both reserved. The fact of the matter is GH3 comes out at the end of this month. SO I have a full month to get my groove back on guitar and be ready to devote my time to teh drums on rock band. Anyone else buying a drum throne and nylon sticks just for this game?

The problem for me with GH is that it is focusing on being more hard than it is fun. I am not getting GHIII because GH games are getting progressively harder, not that i don't like a challenge but it gets to the point where i don't enjoy playing the song. I bought GHII for the 360, and I HATE the clutter of notes that appear in the "harder" songs, for instance (although an extreme example) jordan. No one can possibly hit all those notes. Having beaten the game on expert i find myself only replaying the songs that I truly loved: "Possum Kingdon", "Billion Dollar Babies", "Dead!" (even though i hate the song, it was fun to play), "Raw Dog", "Arterial Black", "Thunderhorse", and a few others. I don't think that easier (but hopefully more fun) songs for guitar in rock band will be a problem.

I'm getting both, but can't say that I'm really looking forward to GHIII all that much anymore. RB kept the focus on music, which is where I like it to be, while GHIII has shifted the focus to being a game. Boss battles? Powerups in multiplayer? Not for me, thanks.

Yeah I'm thinking the same, I imagine I won't be playing battle-mode all that much, if I even get GHIII, it just seems like it will be an annoying diversion from the main game.

well look at it like this, if you have no friends, go buy gh3. however, if u wanna get together with some friends, drink, and play some kick ass songs, this is the way to go. def, a whole hell of alot better than gh3

well it's always nice to have somehwere to move up to. jordan is beatable(not by me) but there are a fair amount of people who can beat it. As long as teh game doesn't hinge on beating songs like jordan it's should be welcomed in the game IMO.

Yeah Battle-Mode is.. infantile in my eyes.. i just want to play some music even if its just a game.

hmm battle mode may seem, 'infantile', but dont forget your playing with a plastic guitar :D. im looking forward to duelling slash, and i guess its optional for multiplayer.

Exactly, my favourite parts of multiplayer guitar hero is when ye both get on a roll and are playing perfectly, knocking back and forth like a tennis game, waiting for one of ye to screw up but at the same time getting such a buzz from playing so in sync. If suddenly one of ye flicked your guitar making the others string break or something equally stupid, it just ruins it... for me anyway.

Hammer-ons are easier to distinguish in RB than in GHII. They are a different size. How much easier can it get? In GHII, I didn't know you could tell the difference from non hammer-ons and hammer-ons until like 3 weeks ago, and I haven't played that game for like two months, so I never knew you could tell which notes you could hammer-on. I just do it by timing, some notes come quicker than others, and since I play guitar, I know when the guitarist is actually doing a hammer-on which also helps. But, now since the hammer-ons are a different size, I think its much easier, and the fact that we've seen these hammer-ons on a computer screen doesn't help. When its on a TV it will be obvious. And if you can't tell the difference, do what I do.

I almost went to pre-order both, but this weekend I got a chance to play GHIII and I wasn't all that impressed...granted they didn't have the hardest songs playable (Lay Down, The Metal, Even Flow) I finished all of them with 5* after only one try (took 3 for The Metal).
I'm just hoping my buddies will pick up GHIII so I can still get a chance to play it...
Battle mode was total crap really...as long as you know what you're doing it's basically pro face off where after you finish the song you have to play "sudden death" which is essentailly who ever misses a note first loses *although it doesn't always work out that way*

As someone that spent a good deal of time playing the game a couple weeks ago, the HOPOs are easy to see. It takes a minute if you don't know what you're looking for, once you do, it's piece of cake. I will admit, from watching the videos, it is rather hard to see.
As far as price goes, you are going to pay more for the Rock Band bundle, but if you've got an old GH controller lying around (provided you're playing on a 360 or PS2) then you could just pick up Rock Band with the drums, and you'll have a whole new instrument that you won't get to play in Guitar Hero.
I'll agree with others that the Guitar Hero battle mode just isn't my thing. I just want to hang out with friends and rock out. However, if you're fiercely competitive and like the idea of forcing your opponent to break a string or play lefty flip, then Guitar Hero might be better for you. I'll be playing both, however, I think that Rock Band will be what stays in my 360 most of the time.
In my eyes, Guitar Hero is trying to be more about competition where Rock Band is about rocking out and having a good time with your friends.

That's exactly what I expected Neversoft would bring into GHIII, ridiculous mini-game-esque battles, with power ups and the like...

I'm getting both, but I'm definitely more hyped about Rock Band.
I just hope the Boss Battles in GHIII aren't too annoying.

I'm not getting Guitar Hero 3 because the battle mode and boss battles look lame, the lead singer now looks ******ed (I also dont like some of the changes they made to some of the other characters), and I dont want to get more plastic guitars than I have to.

After seeing what happened with the KR franchise after Harmonix gave it up I'm just a bit worried about what Neversoft will do with GHIII. I just hope they don't suck all of the fun out of it.

I wish I was able to get both but seeing as HMX have seen fit to do over all its fans outside the USA I am going to buy GH3 (which at least has a release date only 3 weeks after the US). I was planning to import RB on 360 but I have had none of my questions answered to confirm if a US copy would even work (only need to check as I have 4 games which are US versions & work fine). I just hope that GH3 will be good I just have to look past the boss battles & the "lets take out all the fun" Battle mode (which I will avoid at all costs). Plz HMX give us poor non americans something to be happy about anything, a price tag, a better date then 2008 (try a month), or even if a import will work on a UK console.

Well, as far as the graphics go, I guess technically they are good, but the style in Rockband is so much better, in GH3 they totally missed the feeling from GH1 and 2, for instance the lighting is all wrong, it looks like the house lights are on, it doesn't feel like a concert anymore.
Yeah, honestly the soundtrack is the only thing making me lean towards the game, I might pick it up eventually, only if it works with the Rockband guitars, and Harmonix falls short with the DLC.

After playing it the only way I see me buying the game is if the RB guitars work with it and I have the urge to get some achievements
