I can only assume that it is part of the American ad campaign, which tends to lean towards the vulgar in general. As an example the Canon EOS 450d digital camera is baged as a Canon Rebel in the US.

Okay, I'll give you the unnecessary GHIV bashing, but there is some relevance between the video presented here and GHIV, whereas there is none between what you said and the topic at hand.
GHIV is being produced and marketed by the same people who made this video. This video shows a surprising lack of intelligence in it. The idea is stupid in the extreme, has been done a million times before and a million times better (think some toy commercials in the late 80's and early 90's) and shows a complete lack of effort.
Now, this is marketing, where you want your product to really shine, so people see these ads and say "Wow, you know? I really want that". If your ad is so lazy that it's just stealing the gimmic of a million others (and is well past it's prime) and adding nothing to the fray, then why should we, the consumers, believe that there has been any effort put into the game itself. You're face to the public is immensly important and this just has a "okay, fine, whatever, let's do that" ho-hum feel to it.
On top of that, your advertisement should be highlighting specifics of your product, and I don't believe that this ad does that in a respectable manner. Instead of listing features in a clever way it decides to beat you incesently over the head constantly through that horrible Brian Johnson wannabe.
Now, if Activision is not willing to put any kind of effort into advertising their product in an intelligent way, how are we to believe that they will produce a well-developed and intelligent game for us to play in GHIV. See how this is all related now?

I laugh at beer commercials, but I buy the beer that tastes the best for the price. I hope for a good preview at the movies, but I see the movies that get good reviews. Who cares what the ad for another game they developed looks like? If GHIV gets good reviews and is fun when I play the display model, I'll buy it. Who would ever buy a $200 game based on a snappy commercial?
That said, that video is not even so bad it's good... it's just bad.

In captneta045 defense, this ad is in no way directed at anyone over the age of 20 or even less. The entire ad is portrayed in a cartoonish fashion that kids would enjoy, for the same reason Activisions chose to place a mid teen to play the game and not another Brian Johnson wannabe. Not to mention todays kids never lived threw the 80's and probably could care less about the early 90's so saying that this has been done before is kind of irrelevant.
But, I am going to say that captneta045 had no right to come into this thread and change the subject like he did. This ad may not be great but it doesn't give you the right to be a troll dude.

You aren't getting my point.
Beer commercials are supposed to be laughable at best (most of them are just so bad they're good), it's a part of the whole beer culture anymore. Ad companies seem to go out of their way to out-cheese their competition.
As I said, this ad completely lacks any kind of effort or thought, which makes me worry about GHIV. If they can't even put any kind of effort into marketing for a game, easily one of the most important aspects, then why should I believe that they're putting effort into the game at all. There's nothing to indicate that.
Regardless, obviously I'm not going to base a purchase off of an ad for GH: on Tour. Reviews and gameplay are obviously going to be the deciding factors. However, my point was that it is worrying to see something like this being produced as it just shows that they aren't putting effort into anything.

That video is actually more depressing than funny. And kind of insulting to be honest. Activision thinks this is the kind of advertising that will lure in customers? To me, the ad seems to scream "People who play these games are idiots, we can put out the worst ad ever and they'll still eat it up". It insults the intelligence of everyone who plays these games.
Also if I ever see anyone yelling "ROCK OUT!" into their DS microphone I'm gonna punch that person in the face, just a fair warning to anyone planning to get this game :P.

I think I see where they were trying to go with this. That singer reminds me a lot of the "Real Men of Genius" beer commercials. In fact, it might even be the same guy. Now I enjoy some of those ads, and so I could see the marketing team thinking that this would be a fun format to demo their product.
The problem here is that the "Real Men of Genius" ads are celebrating stupid things; that's where the humor comes from. You can construct a successful ad campaign where you are irreverent toward your product, but you can't ever treat it as stupid. Also, what is funny for a 15 second radio spot quickly gets very old over a 2 minute product demonstration.
I'm wondering what is the target media and audience for this ad? It's too long for TV, and too short to be an infomercial. It might be just intended as viral video - something that people will pass around to show to others. If so, we're actually doing it's work for it (though I still think it portrays the product in a stupid light).
My fear is that this ad is intended for movie theaters, where longer segments can be aired before a film. If this comes on 20 feet tall when I'm trapped in a theater seat I might just leave the premisis on general principles.

Playing the strum bar with a stylus? The whammy with a stylus?
Can you imagine what your DS would look like (as in the nice groove etched into it) after trying to play Blackened or And Justice For All on expert?
I think this falls into the same category as their Guitar Hero Carabiner:
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3032061
They are so desperate to cash in on the "Hype" they are producing schlock in any and all forms in trying to get some of it to stick.
I am not really pro or con GH4 - I doubt I want more instruments that are not compatible with other games cluttering up my house. If GH4 came out first, I might have that instead. It did not, so there you have it. Same holds true (for me only, you need to make up your mind) for GH:Aerosmith. I love Aerosmith, but I don't need to own 4 guitars so I can play 2 games. Make a patch (allow a patch on the PS3?) so I don't have to, and I might get it.

As bad as this video is, I think you may be missing the point. It's clearly not an "ad", it's a product demo -- probably created primarily for retail buyers, and maybe to give industry/press/investors a look at the game. Trade marketing tends to be a lot less slick than consumer-targeted advertising.
Further, even with its hojillions of dollars, Activision isn't going to buy three and a half minutes of commercial airtime for each spot. The actual ads will likely be a lot more like the trailer video we saw a while back (cut down to 30 seconds max).

That looks uncomfortable and boring. Who play's guitar strumming toward their fret hand?
If I'm gonna go through all that trouble to strap my DS to my hand and use a "stylus pick" while also carrying around that button accessory, why wouldn't I just wait until I got home and play it the way it was meant to be played?
However, I think I saw "This Love" (Pantera, I'm guessing) on the song list... I would drown a puppy to have that song in Rock Band.

I don't get the "no effort" argument. It isn't like this video/demo just manifested from thin air. A group of people obviously conceived and created it, which would take effort. The video does a good job of showing the gameplay while at the same time injecting a little humor into it, which is necessary when playing a game like Guitar Hero, considering you almost have to look like an idiot to play it correctly.
A portable version doesn't get the same attention as a console version, there is no argument there, but effort and thought are assuredly present. Using one product demo for a portable game as a foundation to judge (or begin judging) a console game is flawed reasoning at best.

I don't really even see the need. DS is a popular hand held, GH is a popular franchise, a GH for the DS should sell. This is probably more of a sales-floor demo, to show the customers "Hey, we have this game and you should buy it".
I mean, I'm sure they didn't need a product demo for the latest Power Rangers or Yu-Gi-Oh titles.

by the way, before this is underway id like too say, pepperjack cheese in a omlete = WIN
reasons why THE CARS album fails?
1.Mostly keyboard based, uhh, Keyboard Band? no...
2.Most of the songs sound the same.
3.the music is NOT exciting, its kinda like the grateful dead pack, u just kinda sit there and play it, you dont get into it.
of course, most of this is just opinion, but if you try too give reasons why the cars album does not fail, well... that will also be mostly opinion as well.

I think the biggest misconception is that Ads are designed to sell you stuff anymore. They're not. Ask anyone on this board, or in your personal life: they never buy something because they saw an advertisement.
Advertisements are made to make you aware of the product. Love it or hate it, this advertisement is a HUGE SUCCESS. Think about it: it's getting you to talk about their product on the main competition's website. Game over man.
Game over.

To the two clowns accusing me of liking that trashy music: I hate Korn. ICP is the biggest disgrace in the music industry. Try again.

Actually, it's been proven the biggest segment is 21-35, so you lose....Plus 17 year olds have little money and crappy taste in music for the most part...
Oh man, QFT. Kids need to realize that they're not the target demographic.
Single men, 21-35, who have too much money to burn and a gadget fetish is the demographic. Not high school drop outs with no jobs.
But I digress.

So now I'm a high school dropout?
All of you are seriously ridiculous with the labeling.

The one thing I've barely seen touched in this topic is why anyone playing this would even feel like it was a Guitar Hero game: your hands are crossed to do the playing, and your strumming is all of a half-inch of finger movements.
Even that ridiculous belt buckle "game" last year was a better concept.
Also, on the topic within the topic: even though I buy all the DLC just because I enjoy playing, I'm a whole lot happier with The Cars than I was with Screaming for Vengeance.

Not you specifically, no. I'm making wide, sweeping, generalizations.
Assumptions, if you will.
Kinda like how people make the assumption that Harmonix is "messing up" with "crappy" releases, like the Cars album.

The average age of gamers is over 30. Why would this game be much different?
So the premise for the commercial was to have a Scott Weiland impersonator doing a Real Men of Genius ad and make it 3 minutes long. Does that make anybody want to purchase the game?
Is there any way to play a guitar game on DS and not look like a tool?

I thought we were going to be laughing at that lame Cars album released yesterday. Like we couldn't just get "Just What I Needed" and "Moving In Stereo" as singles. Damn, what trash the rest of that album is.
Dude this is just your opinion, it helps to remind people of this. Plus you should have maybe posted this elsewhere since it was irrelavent to the subject.
Dude your opinion stinks!!! What do you want more Korn??? They sukk sooo bad! Go take a music history lesson by listening to some 70's bands...you wont get it anyway though cause your a moron! Good job young dummy!
Your post is no better to be honest as this is also your opinion. Plus it makes you look like an immature adult with your entire post.
God that game looks awful.
Also, they completely ripped off those Budweiser "We Salute YOU" commercials you hear on the radio.
I don't watch TV or listen to the radio so I wouldn't know. But if this is the case it seems to fall in line with the GH people taking the "copy" road rather then be original. They seem to have a lot of copying others issues.
Well then your going to love the fact that "This Love" is the Maroon 5 song not Pantera. Sorry
Song list so far from Nintendo Power
Songs:
- Do What You Want - OK Go
- All The Small Things - Blink 182
- Spiderwebs - No Doubt
- Are You Gona Be My Girl - Jet
- We’re Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister
- All Star - Smash Mouth
- Breed - Nirvana <------- By far the most depressing to me since we are still without Nevermind
- Jessie’s Girl - Rick Springfield
- Hit Me With Your Best Shot - Pat Benatar
- This Love - Maroon 5
- Heaven - Los Lonely Boys
- Helicopter - Bloc Party
- China Grove - The Doobie Brothers
- Rock and Roll All Nite - KISS (cover by Line 6)
- What I Want - Daughtry
For a small list of songs, it does show that the GH guys still know how to get some good bands and music.

Your "assumptions" are actually pretty accurate unfortunately. It's actually quite sad. I personally have 3 teenage boys (married into with my current wife of 2 years) and all have chose the path of not completing High School.
They are good and smart boys, however very lazy and seem to have no ambition. The middle boy (17) is in Job Corp currently and is doing great (Unfortunately his ADD made it difficult for him, so he wasn't really lazy).
The youngest (16) is going to Job Corp next month and has been on probation due to truancy issues. Issues that almost put my wife in jail for 6 months because of his stupid ass ditching over 2 months of school without us knowing. The school computer just happened to be 'down' during that time so we had no clue until we received the court papers. Sad thing is he's a straight A student if he would choose to do so. What sucks is he has shown no remorse or caring that he put his mother in this situation. He simply "doesn't care" was I think how he put it.
Then the oldest (18) left the house last year because of who knows. I heard that my rules were too tough. My rule with school is simply don't get an F. Just pass and get your diploma. He could easily be a A-B student as well, but nope, LAZY LAZY LAZY!! So he left the house and is currently homeless and prefers this, although it's catching up to him where he's admitting that he wishes that he would have listened to my advice at the time. So time will tell his future.
Sorry for my rant or whatever you want to call it. I knew my wife for over 10 years befor we got married and watched her raise these 3 boys alone. And she had done EVERYTHING for her boys. I didn't see how she could do it all. She had 2 jobs, went to school and everything for her boys. So for them to end up like this is mind boggling.:(
Anyway as far as the video, all I can say is I almost got sick to my stomach. Very Very poor video. However I think that it might just work for some weird reason.
End of Wall O' Text. Sorry everyone.

you spelled original wrong... but yeah.. they cannot be original anymore... They are just soo depressed that Red Octane and Harmonix broke up and Harmonix has the better game.... Looking at the sales between GH3 and RB... i just makes me laugh that they have to go and copy Rock band for GUITAR Hero 4. Because you know when you add a drum set to a game called GUITAR Hero still makes it Guitar hero... but its not... its more like Guitar/Drum Hero... it is pathetic.

Okay. Since you like throwing stereotypes on me (here comes one at you), since you're 30, I'm willing to bet you're a fat hairy loser with no wife or girlfriend, or you're divorced 'cause your wife needs someone that looks respectfully presentable.
You're 30, GET OFF INTERNET MESSAGE BOARDS and make a living for yourself.
Sucks, doesn't it?
I happen to think I have quite a fine taste in music. Simply saying I'm like every other 17-year-old because I don't like The Cars is ***.
you can't just say music is crap just because you don't like it. tons of other people like it. i myself can't stand the any of the emo crap they put out today. I don't like fall out boy or bullet for my valentine. the old music is the best. that doesn't mean they suck, it means i just would prefer to listen to something else.
escept for rap. rap sucked period. i wish i could get paid to talk into a microphone about hookers.
besides, if the cars sucked, then why were they famous?
how many records have you released?

Thanks for the heads up. I usually try and proof read somewhat to catch those mistakes because it looks sloppy. So yeah, thanks.
As far as the GH4 thing, I'm actually glad there will be another 'band' game on the market somewhat. But regardless, it's always so much easier and cheaper to copy anything then to invent it from scratch. It was bound to happen some time and the obvious one to do the copying is the GH guys. Oh well, that's life in lots of different forms of business. Not only the video game industry.
Doesn't mean that our Rock Band fun will change or anything. Maybe get better, who knows though.;):)

This is pretty black and white though. Having fond memories of a band in your past doesn't make the band great just as a person who does not enjoy most music of the 70s-80's is a little kid. The Cars reference doesn't belong in here but the fact that it does brings up a relevant point.
That was an embarassing commercial. We all agree, that went wrong in many, many ways. But it did highlight something that is of note: the track list of that game. Which I have to say was a pretty interesting try. Rock Band started off their game, and their inital DLC with the idea that they should pick up some classic songs (which are really good), and music spanning from decade to decade as a sort of tribute to what rock was really about, and where it went/is going. I actually disliked rock until I played Guitar Hero, and this game allowed me to learn a lot more about the roots of what rock stands for. I have almost no complaints about the inital offerings.
However, as time passed, I've noticed that they've decided to forsake newer music over some really old stuff that is largely niche market. While I respect this, the amount of older music greatly surpasses the more modern music, and there are a lot of people complaining about that. The attitude presented to these people by the crowd that are very happy with this music appears elitist, as they get what they wanted so they proclaim their music is better and they are justified in calling them kids, or stupid, or say their music sucks(which is a horrible argument. anyone using it should be ashamed you consider yourself 21-35 or older, yet more mature than people who say the DLC sucks). The reason this is on topic is because the marketing involved allows this opinion to be supported.
Because as stupid as that ad was, people would kill for some of that list as DLC, and to them making the Cars a downloadable album was horrible marketing that was recently topped by this ad.
But I didn't like the album, so am I 17 too?

Anyways back to the topic. Really..I mean...REALLY?!?!? Sometimes I wonder how these things get approved because that was horrible. As if I didn't already have enough reasons to not waste money on such a POS game:rolleyes:

I get what the video is going for, and admittedly even found some of the metal singer's retorts so over the top that they made me chuckle a bit (which I'm sure is the point), but none of that changes how the game looks. IMO it looks clumsy and doesn't really make much sense to me outside of just trying to cash in with another Guitar Hero SKU.
You seriously have to yell "ROCK OUT!" to activate Star Power?! Yikes.

For some reason I watched the video again. I'd like to retract my original statement. I now realize I chuckled only becase I felt embarrassed for the actors in the video. My mistake. :p
