View Full Version : D-pads?

I was hoping you guys could help me out a little bit. I'm trying to get back in competition shape on Super Puzzle Fighter II, but the Xbox 360's D-pad leaves much to be desired. Ignoring analog sticks entirely, what pads have you guys found work well for these old, classic games?

Would an arcade stick be a good alternative? I'm personally picking up http://www.ebgames.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802191 when Virtua Fighter is released; Hori makes some good sticks. Mad Catz has a stick controller too, but it's really bad.

As for a better d-pad? Dunno about that one.

I wish Microsoft wasn't such a pain about their controllers. I have http://www.x-arcade.com/solo.shtml and it would've been nice to use that (like I do on every other system).

I would love to know the answer to this myself. As much as I like the 360 controller... the 360's D-Pad is just bad on an epic scale. :(

I've been considering this item:

http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Control-Pad-Controller/dp/B000BQUV52/ref=sr_1_14/105-6948247-3272401?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1192040310&sr=1-14

Mad Catz usually makes some pretty solid hardware, but I have no first hand experience to confirm if it is any good.

There's also this controller.... which looks cool, but is probably impractical for real gaming. It is certainly a throwback to a older era though. :)

Yeah, I have this one. It is fun trying to use it in games like Gears/Rainbow/Halo though, because it just dosent fit the game at all. Also, the headset port is horrible. If you have ever chatted with someone while being plugged into the X--plorer(which is pretty bad). the sound quality is even worse. The only positive about the controller, is the d-pad.

I really regret buying it. Although, it did come with a headset and some free arcade games, so it wasnt a total waste.

I've got this controller, actually. The d-pad, while not great, is still a bit better than the regular controller. The analog stick isn't as good as the default, though. And the turbo seems to happen accidentally all of the time / is pretty unintuitive to turn on and off. You'll need to read the manual for that one. I'm fond of the smaller version of this controller, however, as I'm pretty used to tiny electronics.

Has anyone tried Hori's offering?

BTW, as a quick send-off to this long dead thread, I picked up the Hori. The d-pad works perfectly right out of the box, and the buttons are direct and "buttoney." The shoulder buttons seem a little off, and the analog sticks are a little too forceful for my taste, but overall I'm very happy.

Puzzle Fighter, here I come!
