View Full Version : Cymbals and HammerOns (IDEA!)

While the terminology certainly won't be correct, we're all familiar with the concept of hammer on/pull off notes in our guitar charts. A smaller version of the same colored note, or in GH's case the same note with a bright white center.

We've seen GHIV's drumset, as well as the ION kit for Rock Band. At this point, for Rock Band at least, cymbals would only serve as gimmicks, since you could hit the same colored drum and still score.

My idea is to implement those "hammer on" notes into the drum charts. For example, a "hammer on" yellow would indicate that you need to hit the yellow cymbal for a hihat note and a regular size yellow would indicate that you need to hit the yellow pad for a tom note.

I know Harmonix isn't going to keep the same drum design or gameplay options due to competition from the currently unreleased, but generally regarded as superior drum component of Guitar Hero IV.

A major concern for current Rock Banders is backwards compatibility for DLC. If this idea is implemented the charts won't have to be changed, as the notes would still stay the same saving work that would be wasted mapping another color. The only change would be the size of the notes, and figuring out which note is what shouldn't be that hard. This would be a mandatory download, hypothetically, for those who want to play their old DLC should a new and improved drum component release with RB2.

This would add to the realism without drastically altering the charts as you still only have four colors and the bass pedal, saving much needed chart space in a full band environment. Guitar Hero added another color and 2 cymbals. Should this idea be implemented, we would essentially have all the major components of a basic drum set: snare, hihat, ride cymbal, crash cymbal, 2 rack toms, a floor tom and a bass drum.

This would mean adding 3 cymbals to the current drumset. Although I think the quality is extremely low, I think the current drumset is relatively well designed. Harmonix could release a plug and play (which has already been done actually) cymbal pack allowing for current Rock Band drumsets to function with the hypothetical sequel alongside a standalone drumset including cymbals, giving much more incentive to purchase the new game for current consumers. Assuming it all holds together, this would trump GHIV anyday!

I like the hammeron/cymbal idea a lot. It being simple and relatively non-invasive to those who wont be upgrading anytime soon. Although, If something big, like cymbal-specific notes, is going to be implemented in the next incarnation of Rock Band, its most likely already programmed into all of the DLC or not being added at all. Harmonix has the same advantage that Apple has with iTunes in that they have people investing a lot of money in music that plays only on their software. Consumers are making a commitment and they are not going to make those people throw away all of their money because songs wont play on their Rock Band 2 because of some gimmicky idea tacked on a Rock Band-regurgitation (Read: Guitar Hero 4) that they "have to" compete with. Harmonix is a big boy, theyll come out on top. Theyve been making rythm games since Activision was cloning its first Tony Hawk ;)

Though a good idea indeed, it's not really a new one. People have been talking about this same thing for quite a while now. Re-editing every single drum chart would more of a chore than you'd think. Unless before RB was released they had future plans of cymbals and have alternative drum charts developed already.

it's an old idea but a good one nonetheless.

Really, the old DLC doesn't need re-editing, it'll just be missing the cymbal hits. If we allow the cymbals to be used regardless of whether it's a half not eor not then that means that anybody that really cares can just use the cymbals where appropriate, assuming the chart doesn't have an odd mapping to it
