this happens with every generation... the songs that one remembers hearing in middle school and high school end up being attached to a whole chapter of ones life.

If I had to guess when 70-80% of Rock Band players were born I'd have to guess between the years 1984 - 1994. I respect your decision to cover all genres and time periods of the all-encompasing "rock" genre... but...

I beg of you,

Please,

Respect your core customers...

Respect the 90's

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UC9Oyb3RmsU&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UC9Oyb3RmsU&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

The following songs are featured in the youtube video found above. Watch the video and I know you'll recognize at least a handful of them. Granted, they're probably vocal centered songs rather than guitar/drum/bass centered.

#20. Collective Soul – Smashing Young Man
#19. Soul Asylum – Black Gold
#18. Sugar Ray – Fall Apart
#17. Everclear – Everything to Everyone
#16. Stone Temple Pilots – Big Bang Baby
#15. Beck – Devil’s Haircut
#14. The Cardigans – Lovefool
#13. Eve 6 – Leech
#12. Spin Doctors – Two Princes
#11. Superdrag – Sucked Out
#10. Weezer – Come Undone (The Sweater Song)
#9. The Foo Fighters – Learn to Fly
#8. The Bare Naked Ladies – It’s All Been Done
#7. Fastball – The Way
#6. Lit – My Own Worst Enemy
#5. No Doubt – Just a Girl
#4. Third Eye Blind – Losing A Whole Year
#3. The Wallflowers – One Headlight
#2. Duran Duran – Ordinary World
#1. The Red Hod Chili Peppers - Otherside

I would easily pay $50 for these twenty tracks, and I'm not just saying that.

***note***
Beck's - Devil's Haircut isn't really possible with its minimal guitar playing.
The Cardigans and No Doubt tracks would be our girlfriend's new favorites.
I realize the Foo Fighters track is already in the game.

This is true for a lot of people. I'm glad it's not so in my case.

I'm 35 for the record.

I want some hair metal in Rock Band.

I want some my chemical Romance in Rock Band.

I want some AC/DC in Rock Band.

I want Franz Ferdinand, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Atreyu, Loverboy, Bullet for My valentine, Meatloaf, Van Halen, Elvis Presley, Offspring, Marilyn Manson, Trivium, White Zombie, Golden Earring, and so on and so on.

Before Rock Band, I didn't listen to or like Fall out boy, or the all american Rejects, and a couple dozen other bands.

Now after playing This ain't a scene, Move along, Countdown to insanity, Wave of mutilation, and quite a few others, I've found the selection of bands I listen to and enjoy growing.

So like the DLC or hate it, HMX are doing what they set out to do all those years ago with Frequency :)

Casual players don't enjoy singing songs they don't know.

I'd like to see some more singles...

I don't like the Wallflowers but their single "One Headlight" heard at 8:39 in the above video would be a joy to sing/play/drum in Rock Band.

Honestly, the last 5 songs in the above youtube video would all make excellent inclusions to the Rock Band set list in my opinion.

great compilation, I'd like to see the majority of the songs on there on Rock Band. I also don't mind seeing the 60's/70's/80's/2000's in there either though.
As HMX continues to grow I would love to see some of these bands included with more of their songs though.

actually, the biggest gaming age segment is 20-34, so should really be from mid 80's onward as far as to what we grew up with...However, many people in that segmant love classic rock as well...

I think HMX has done a fine job so far, adn I am sure we will see more 90's rock soon

I'm 43. I suspect that the Harmonix managers/directors are about my age, and the coders in their 30s. We oldsters have more disposable income for DLC. So there you go.

I agree with you Supersonic... Im 23 years old. I realize HMX can't just give the 20-34 year olds what they want and they have a whole 30 year span of people to appease.

I saw this Youtube video though and couldn't help but think that all of those songs would be so much fun at parties.

I'd buy 6# and 1#.

I'd rather have:

80's Hair Metal

80's Ballads (Heaven, I Remember You, Cinderella, etc.)

My all time favorite album has to be "Monster Ballads: Platinum Edition" because it includes such tracks as:

Heaven- Warrant
I Remember You - Skid Row
When I see You Smile- Bad English
Don't Know What You Got(Till its Gone)- Cinderella
Every Rose has its thorn- Poison
Love Song- Tesla
Is This Love- Whitesnake
The Angel Song- Great White
More than Words- Extreme

I suggest you buy this CD, if you already havent.

thanks for the reply Prince of Cups,

When I started this thread I had in mind that most of the HMX managers/directors were older and I'll bet that many of the songs that have been featured in the game so far were songs that these same managers/directors grew up with. I can respect their choices and their freedom to choose anything they want.

But seriously, aren't there TONS of 20-30 year olds who would love to have some of these tracks in the game. I feel like the 90's just don't get any respect. I realize it was the decade of the Spice Girls and N*Sync but there were still many catchy rock tunes that I'll never forget. It doesn't hurt that I was turning 13 right around when Pablo Honey had come out.

Yep, we have the disposable money, I agree.

I am 34, and would buy everything the OP put down, but I also want more from the 80's, as well as 70's, 90, and 2000's, so I am pretty easy to please...as long as it is not thrash:eek:

The 80's still had quite a bit of good mainstream rock. The 90's already had considerably less. Some of my favorite albums of all times are 90's albums, but they'd probably all be seen as 'too obscure' for RB. As far as mainstream rock is concerned, I'd rather see HMX stick to the classic rock of the 80's and earlier.

Of course, this doesn't mean that I don't feel 90's mainstream music shouldn't be in the game (everyone deserves something they like, after all), just that it isn't much of a priority for me personally, despite the fact that I was a teen in the 90's. Of the OP's list, only the Duran Duran and STP tracks would be 'must haves' for me, and two or three other songs are songs I'd consider, depending on the chart.

Drand, you're right, 14-24 doesn't seem to be capturing the Rock Band audience like I thought it would.

I'm not sure if that's because not all Rock Band players are members on the forums here or if it really is a money thing.

I agree... somewhat
Being 16 and living the lifestyle I was introduced too (the holy herb). I guess it's just kind of ironic that I'm a huge 60's through mid 80's type of music person.
Granted, yes, I do like a alot of the 90's music and 2000. But really just a select few from each of the two genres.
IMO, HMX can't always give you the type of music on RB that you want. The age group varies more than most know. And because you were born in the 90's (like me), doesn't mean you're almost bound to prefer that type of music.

__

Had a few other things I was going to say/point out but I lost my track of though and now this post seems pointless:confused:
Anyway.. Got a quick question for you guys

50's :: Blues / Early rock
60's :: Foundation and best mix of Classic rock with the blues
70's :: Classic rock
80's :: Hair bands
90's :: Grunge
2000 :: Weak rock and terrible rap (IMO, and lack of a more appropriate term)

^^^ Agree?

I have to be honest, when I was growing up, I didn't listen to much of the rock.

I tended to listen to older music or "pop" music.

That being said, there are some bands (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc.) that I would love to get DLC from.

There are probably a lot of songs I NEVER heard, but if they rock, then I would see no problem with Harmonix adding them.

NOTE: For a Beck song, I'm not sure how it would work, but "Loser" would be GREAT for vocalists. :)

It is in the "casual players" that gaming makers make their money.

"Casual players" will buy what they like and nothing more.

This is debatable. 'Casual players' will also jump on the 'next big thing' rather quickly, forgetting about previous games they bought. So although they might be a target market for game developers in general ('buy our shiny new game! Oooh...SHINY!), they might not be the preferred target for a 'long-term' game like Rock Band, that might be better off with a smaller group of more devoted players that 'sticks with the game' and actively purchases their weekly expansions.
I'm neither employed in economics/marketing or at HMX, though, so in the end this is as much guesswork as just about anything else on this forum.

So, you mean to tell me that there isn't a single band formed in the '00s that's good?

It's people like you who make general statements about decades in relation to music that piss me off. Really. No music genre ever dies. It always exists. There are bands these days that sound like Sabbath, bands that sound like Cream, and bands that sound like Skynyrd. If you looked at all of the music made in this decade, you would find something you like. Sure, the commercial stuff may not be your cup of tea, but the good music still exists. You just have to look around.

One of my favorite ways of discovering good, new bands is by using Pandora. Basically, you tell this website a band you like, it will look at the band's music to find out how they sound, and then it finds other bands with similar roots. Check it out, it's really cool. (http://pandora.com/)

this happens with every generation... the songs that one remembers hearing in middle school and high school end up being attached to a whole chapter of ones life.

I'm now going to go through and improve your list, because there are better songs. There are some songs I didn't change because I liked the song and some I didn't change because the band sucks in general, ie Fastball & Third Eye Blind.

#20. Collective Soul – Shine
#19. Soul Asylum – Somebody to Shove
#18. Sugar Ray – Every Morning
#17. Everclear – One Hit Wonder
#16. Stone Temple Pilots – Big Bang Baby
#15. Beck – Where It's At
#14. The Cardigans – Lovefool
#13. Eve 6 – Leech
#12. Spin Doctors – Two Princes
#11. Superdrag – Sucked Out
#10. Weezer – In The Garage
#9. The Foo Fighters – Everlong
#8. The Bare Naked Ladies – If I Had $1,000,000
#7. Fastball – The Way
#6. Lit – My Own Worst Enemy
#5. No Doubt – Sunday Morning
#4. Third Eye Blind – Losing A Whole Year
#3. The Wallflowers – One Headlight
#2. Duran Duran – Come Undone
#1. The Red Hod Chili Peppers - Aeroplane

Now I'm going to try to make my own 90's list.

1. Butthole Surfers - Pepper
2. Fountains Of Wayne - Radiation Vibe
3. Letters to Cleo - Here & Now
4. Dinosaur Jr. - Feel The Pain
5. Superdrag - Who Sucked Out The Feeling
5. The Refreshments - Banditos
6. Sublime - Date Rape
7. The Toadies - Possum Kingdom
8. Human Waste Project - This Town
9. Ben Folds Five - Song For The Dumped
10. David Bowie & NIN - I'm Afraid Of Americans
11. Bjork - Human Behavior
12. The Breeders - Cannonball
13. Cake - Sheep Go To Heaven
14. Ministry - N.W.O.
15. Jane Addiction - Been Caught Steeling
16. Local H - Bound For The Floor
17. Primus - Tommy The Cat
18. Elastica - Connection
19. Sponge - Plowed
20. Veruca Salt - Volcano Girls

That feels better to me. I know people won't agree, because you can't please everyone all the time, but I feel that's a mix of good stuff and well known good stuff. :D

+1 to the OP.

I was born in 1984 and would love to see any of these bands that I remember listening to on the bus every day (in no particular order)...

Collective Soul

Our Lady Peace
Third Eye Blind
No Doubt
The Offspring
Cake
Fuel
Everclear

There's probably more I could list, but I'm mainly just showing some support for the topic.

What I don't understand about the OP's list, even if I agree with its essential point, is how he generated that particular song list.

Boston right now is pretty much the best hit the game has seen... unsurprisingly, it is also the band that had the most sales outside the game.

I can perfectly appreciate HMX's desire to introduce us to new music, especially through promotional deals that give us a chance to hear upcoming artists--the SFX pack, Disturbed, etc. I can also appreciate the desire to not forget the legacy of music that we have experienced over the past half century, whether from the 90s or not.

However, I almost feel like HMX has something against releasing best-selling singles in the US at least.

I would like to see more songs that will be instantly recognizeable regardless of the era the song was released:

Another One Bites The Dust - Queen - Over 7 million singles sold
Hey Jude - The Beatles - Over 8 million singles sold

Over 3 million singles sold:
Eye of the Tiger - Survivor
Billie Jean - Michael Jackson

Over 2 million singles sold:
Proud Mary - Creedence Clearwater Revival
I Love Rock 'N Roll - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

As far as I know, the only song in Rock Band to break 2 million in sales as a single was The Knack's My Sharona. People talk as if there's an unending multiplicity of options for "casual players," when really the chances of a casual player knowing a song in the game outside of Rock Band is not all that spectacular except for noted exceptions.

If we're going to see another album or more album songs, why not have it be from albums that sold more than 25 million copies? Right now the biggest album songs we have is "Wanted Dead Or Alive" (Part of Slippery When Wet which sold over 28 million albums worldwide. Unsurpisingly, few people complain about that song. Go figure.)

Why not: The Eagles' Greatest Hits? Pink Floyd's The Wall? Led Zeppelin IV? AC/DC Back in Black? Or, perhaps more relevant to this thread, Pearl Jam's Ten.

Boston was great... let's see some more like it, huh?

http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/04/29/grand.theft.auto/

At this point, what have they made, close to a billion dollars?

How many are "casual gamers"?

Price doesn't matter, $170 is not as much for a game as it used to be.

It's very essential for Rock band to build a customer base beyond "hardcore gamers".

u kids and your music lol - 90's rock was ok (about 10&#37; of it) but w/e : just dont bring this **** from the 2000's in - thats not even music lol.

Wow, it's ignorant people like you that make me ashamed to be part of the human race. There are several bands from the 2000's that are excellent, they just generally don't get accepted by the majority of the mainstream. There's no way you can sit there and tell me bands like Coheed and Cambria aren't talented musicians (unless you're tone deaf and have no idea whatsoever about the technicalities of music). Not to mention bands like 3, The Mars Volta, The Sword...all excellent bands from the 2000's, and what do all four of the bands I've named have in common? They're not prostituted to the mainstream! Stop judging the 2000's by the radio and MTV and use the link the guy a few posts up provided. People like you disgust me. You think your era of music was the only thing that's good, and you shut yourself off to everything else. It's a damn shame.

And for the record, I'm 20 (almost 21) and I listen to music from about '65 on up. Out of my entire collection, the '90's bands make up the least of my collection, so I can't say I agree with the OP. I'd love some Alice in Chains, but besides that there's nothing that comes to mind. And again, for the record, I'm not much of a Nirvana fan, hence why I didn't name them.

Any 90's list is irrelevant without Metallica, Live, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains in there. My opinion anyhow.

My top 90' songs would be as follows:

Man In The Box- Alice In Chains
Sanitarium- Metallica
Estranged- GnR
Bullet With Butterfly Wings- Smashing Pumpkins
Dead and Bloated- STP
Alive- Pearl Jam
I Alone- Live
Disposable Heroes- Metallica
Give it Away- RHCP
Shine- Collective Soul
Naveed- Our Lady Peace
Jesus Christ Pose- Soundgarden
Paradise City- GnR
Paranoid Android- Radiohead
Animal- Pearl Jam
The Sickness- Disturbed

And this list really spotlights what is the true weakness of 90's/00's rock - a thorough lack of vocal talent. Primus? Bjork? Jane's Addiction? You've got to be effing kidding me!

I'm not saying that I don't like any of the songs on this list (it's a fine list), but let's face it, since the grunge era started, there haven't been more than a handful of really good rock vocalists. In the 70's/80's you had Delp, Perry, Gramm, Cronin, (Ann) Wilson, Mercury, (Jon) Anderson, Plant, Cummings, Meat Loaf even (you may not like him, but he's got serious pipes). I could go on and on....

The vocalists from the 90's/00's simply can't approach the depth or the vocal quality of this collection.
