I've had my RB bundle on pre-order w/ Amazon.com for a month or so now and started getting concerns that I wouldn't get the game on the "supposed release date of Nov 23" being that UPS doesn't appear to be shipping that day.
So, I went into gamestop 15 mintues ago and bought a copy of the bundle for in-store pickup. I asked the manager when I could pick up my guaranteed copy and he replied, "My computer shows this as having a street date of Nov 20th" I of course told him that all the interwebnet says its Black Friday for release, to which he replied, "well you can come in here and pick up your copy at 10:00am on the 20th as that our street date."
Take it for what you will.
EDIT: New information from board member tofer appears to confirm that the street date is now in fact November 20! Rejoice for early releases!

Sorry, it's already been confirmed that it will be released on the 23rd. They probably just didnt get the news yet. My local Gamestop didn't get the news until like, yesterday.

Where is the EA/HMX confirmation? All I see is game sites reporting the 23rd.
I mentioned this to the store manager as well and he said that there's no way they'd release something like that on Black Friday due to crowds that will cause inconvienence for the "normal" holiday shoppers on that day.
Again, take it for what its worth.

i dont think it would hurt to drop in the store on the 20th and tell them you came to pickup your preorder, especially if you paid for it in full. they might not care and fork it over. one less customer to deal with on the official release date.

although i cant source a confirmation at the moment, youre forgetting that bounchfx (i think that's his sn) heard the news about the price and release date from a harmonix employee at a tour stop, and hmxsean also let us know the day before that we would have something to talk about (inferring to the news about the price drop and release date). if you still want to be stubborn and seek more proof, i guess that's up to you.

ugh, we all KNOW when the release date is (23rd) some stores may bend the rules and or accidently put the game out on the tuesday if they have it around. Such as Walmart, they know a lot less than EB or game specific stores, so I could see it happening in that case.

i understand that, but id bet the distribution of the game is being treated as such as they would a tuesday release. theyd be idiots to distribute the game under a friday release plan with the holiday(s) that week.

A buddy of mine in Orlando was told the same thing this afternoon at a Gamestop there...come in on the 20th and pick it up.
With an "official" release date of the 23rd, the stores are going to have it no later than the 21st anyway...they're not going to make special shipments just for Rock Band, and no one wants to be accepting shipments on Black Friday. And since the 20th is a Tuesday and a normal shipment date, it makes sense that they would have it in stock then, probably with giant "DO NOT SELL UNTIL 11/23" stickers all over them, but some stores will ignore those like they always do.
I've about had it with the lack of any real information on whether or not online preorders will actually receive their shipments on the 23rd, I think I'm going to cancel and just go the retail route.
The 23rd is a really freaking stupid day to release a game.

The street date IS the street date IS the 23rd, and no amount of profession from a (no offense) village idiot gametop employee is going to change it.
If we all went by gamestop heresay, the guitar+game alone would be $200, with another $80 on top for drum kits, and microphones not even available at release! (that was the pricing according to *my* local gamesetop) Seriously, these people are notorous for mis-information. They can't possibly keep tabs on every release date, and pricing structure for every game that comes out.

If the dude wants to get his hopes up for a two day early release, let him! How is it harming anyone else? If his local store sells earlier than they are supposed to, then good for him, what a lucky guy! We'll all get it that week anyways, so just let the dude dream. He's just quoting what was told to him and is hoping it's true, and I'm sure he has his own doubts about it...just my two cents...

I work at GameStop and actually if you want inside info on game release dates we usually know before most other places. And actually when EA/Harmonix made the official announcement of the price and release date our preorder system changed the Street Date for RB to the 23rd, but it has since switched back to the 20th. I'm not saying that it is coming out on the 20th or that GameStop's release dates are always accurate, but I just wanted to get word in straight from someone who works at GS

This is similar to what the GS guy told me except it was something like, "the street date has bounced around a few times."
And as for "quoted sources:" If you don't quote the source directly, its nothing but hearsay. There's a reason that hearsay isn't allowed in a court of law and its because its often times bullsh|t. We have yet to see an actual press release from anyone that directly owns, develops, or distributes this game about a release date.
I'm not trying to argue, I'm just saying facts are facts, hearsay is hearsay, and there's a big difference, regardless if its posted on a forum or not.

That changed today when a Harmonix rep confirmed for GameSpot that Amazon.com's latest changes to the game's price and release date are accurate. The online retailer is currently listing the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 bundles of the game for $169.99, with a November 23 release date.
In addition to that news, the representative also confirmed the PlayStation 2 version's price and release date. Last-generation gamers will have to wait a little longer to shred, but the price of admission won't be quite so steep, because the PS2 bundle will sell for $159.99 when it arrives December 10. The game and instruments will also be available separately.
How is that not official?

if you are persuasive enough, you may be able to get it on the date he told you. the same thing happened to me with GH2, the manager told me i could pick it up on a certain date (2-3 days early) went in, then they told i couldnt get it, i told him you guaranteed me i could pick it up today, ended up walking out with my copy of GH2 that day.

UPS is indeed not delivering that day with the exception of UPS Air and International packages. If you ordered the game with overnight delivery the game will have to be shipped Air and therefore will be delivered on the 23rd. The Gamestop site even says as much that if you order by 11am CST on the the 21st (the day they'll ship for 23rd delivery) then you'll get it on Friday

i just came back from my local Gamestop. I asked the manager there what the release date was. He looked it up in the computer and he said the 20th. I told him that they were saying that it was the 23rd online and he said:
"If it says the 20th in my computer and we have it then, i will sell it to you."
That was from the manager of the store, not a chimp employee. Anyways, i dont really care if it does come out on the 23rd, because i can wait, but it is worth a shot...

I'm in a very precarious situation. I have the game pre-ordered at my local Gamestop, only the minimum 25 bucks for now. I've also had my friend place a pre-order for me at his local Gamestop, about 3 hours north of here, as that is where I will be over the Thanksgiving holiday. So, if by the grace of God it does release on the 20th, I could still get it here at my local store, but if it sticks to the 23rd, then I have to go w/ the one up north. I think I'm going to leave my pre-order as is, and his, guarding for both scenarios.
To further complicate matters, plans are fully in-motion for my birthday party on the 24th, which will be heavily featuring Rock Band. So I will either get 3 days practice, or 1. Such complications...and that's just in landing the game. Haven't even gotten into TV rentals and sound system set-up yet. HMX it would be a whole lot easier for me if you just went ahead and shipped your tour set-up to me a few days before the party, alone w/ a copy of the game and everything...oh, and some extra instruments would probably be a good idea too, in case we bust one up...kthx.

I sure wish we could all get along. But it's a forum, my dear friend. Believing Gamestop manager gibberish over official release dates from Harmonix just makes us want to point out how silly that is. It's in our blood.
Think of it this way. If people didn't post silly rumors from Gamestop managers, and we didn't point out how silly that was, then none of us would post anything at all. And then the Rock Band Forums would die. Do you want that? Don't you love Rock Band? Then let us have our fun.

Though I would hate to throw the November 20th date out there as the more likely release date than the 23rd... I too was told it will be released on the 20th.
I paid off the rest of my pre order for The Bundle (YAY!!!!! :D), and I asked what day they would receive the game. I already assumed it would be that Tuesday (the 20th). They confirmed they would get it in on that date (well, on or before the 20th anyway). I asked that they would release it for sure on the 23rd. The employee then took a double look at the date and said the street date was the 20th... he then said "they (EA) probably thought it would be stupid to release it on Black Friday... so this would allow people that want the game to get it without the Black Friday hassle."
I then asked them if I were to come in that Tuesday (the 20th) and they had it in, if I would be able to walk out with The Bundle. He said "Yes."
I only asked about all this because of this thread. Now, I wont complain if I have to wait until Black Friday, but it would be nice, you know? Take this for what it is worth (not much)... but it doesn't hurt to get out of the house and ask employees/managers when they will get this in and when they will sell it at your local retailers.

It probably doesn't mean anything, but circuit city's site has the release date listed as the 20th. Of course the gamestop site has the "correct" date of the 23rd, and toys r us is really optimistic with the 8th. I'm sure the 23rd is the right date, but I wonder why gamestop apparently has it listed differently online and in store.

The tool of a manager at the GameStop by my house looked it up in his release book and said "the 23rd....no, wait the 20th". I only preordered there because it's close to my house and there's nothing in that plaza that anyone would want to go to on Black Friday. additionally ive been toying with the idea of having my wife flirt with the men in front of me to lure them out of the line....but at the cost of a 200 dollar pair of shoes of her choice. depending on the release date, it may be worth it.

Hello fellow rockers! I'm new here... Been lurking for a while, but officially signed up just now... Anywho, I'm very curious about this Nov. 20th possible release date.... Though, I used to work in a video game store, and most of the time the release date for a game would be different than the day we had them available. Which might be why the official release date is the 23rd, which would mean the stores may get them in by the 20th, but not be able to sell them till the 23rd... Thoughts?

Well that's kinda the point of this thread. I (as have others) have been told by my GameStop store manager that I can come in on the 20th and pick up my preorder of RB. His computer says that the "STREET DATE" is the 20th, and since his computer says the 20th, he'll give it to me on the 20th. However, you've got other people on the forums who INSIST that regardless of these multiple confirmations that we're not going to see the game until the 23rd.
Frankly it doesn't matter to me either way, because I'll be doing all the playing on the 23rd through the 25th, I just started the thread because of what the GameSpot dewd told me.

Thanks for the clarification! I think what we all need to do is just be patient and see what happens... I doubt everyone here has pre-ordered their bundle from GameStop, (I know I have!) so this doesn't really apply to all anyway. Unless it is undoubtedly true, and in that case most people probably would shift over to GameStop. I'm crossing my fingers for this one, even though it would mean the bundle will be available on a Tuesday, and the non-slacker working class majority of us would have to work through the grueling 3 days till the weekend to have time to get a full day of non-stop rocking!! whew! That was a long sentence...and probably incorrect in many ways... But you know what I mean!

Thoughts?
Well... welcome to the forums. :P
As you have already been answered by Redebo, that is the point of this thread.
However I would like to make it known that not this past time, but the time before last as i was putting money down on my pre-order (shortly after the "Official Release Date and Price announcement") I asked about when they would get it in, and when they would sell it.
I was told then that they would probably get it in on that Tuesday (the 20th) and sell it on Black Friday (the 23rd). This past and finally time I put money down to finish off my pre-order, I was told that they would sell it on the 20th... and that is what was in the computer. This was only within a couple week time span.

Exactly, just because it said Nov 20th doesn't mean it will still say that come release time, which is the only time that matters. If their computer tells them not to sell it (which it will) they won't sell it.
Don't get me wrong, if they have a glitch come the 20th, I'll be all up on it. It's just, right now none of this matters, because they will be fixing it.

I thought it was the fact that Gamestop's system first changed from the 20th to the 23rd when the releas announcement was made, but has since changed BACK to the 20th that was the reason for this thread. Yes, I realize it's only going to matter what is in the system on the 20th and/or 23rd, but it's still interesting to see why all these gamestops across the country are changing the street date BACK to the 20th...I'm gonna keep my eye on it all at least...

I figure, as long as it comes out that week, there's no sense worrying too much more about it until November.

A semi-update on the Nov 20 vs. 23 thing. I went by my local Gamestop last night. Apparently they're still in the dark ages over there as they don't actually look up release dates directly in the Gamestop system, but instead handed me a thick binder w/ release dates printed out, they must get these sheets weekly from Gamestop Central or something. Anyway, I looked up Rock Band it's got the street date listed as November 20. The sheet that it was printed on said 'As of Oct 11, 2007' at the top, so it might be a little old, but still after we had been told the 'official' release date of the 23. I'll continue to stop by whenever I'm in the area to peruse their mysitcal binder. This store in in Southern Illinois, in case anyone is wondering what region.
I also got the same canned response from the person behind the desk. "We don't set the release dates, the publisher does. When a game is street dated, that's the date we're going to sell it, if we have it."

Eventually those magical binders will be updated with Nov. 23rd. No one should really get their hopes up to walk in and get it on the 20th. Mainly cuz it's illegal.
Once it gets closer to release, maybe like early November, they'll have the right date.
Young_Nastyman
10-17-2007, 01:08 AM
We updated ours yesterday, still says the 20th street date. The system is so out of whack its not even funny. Sometimes when it says release date, it means ship date and other times its the street date. The system has been getting updated lately so hopefully they'll fix it to have a column for each: ship date, receive date, and street date. It would make mis-information less of a problem. Then again, people still call in on the ship date saying that they got a call from the automated phone thingy saying to pick up their reserve, so they need to fix that as well.

I'll re-direct people to the EA press release again, which you can see on their site by going here:
http://www.ea.com/article.jsp?id=holiday07
You'll have to use the little arrow buttons in the bottom right corner to skim the pages, and on the 7th page you get to Rock Band, and it's November 20th release date.
This press release is dated October 8th, which wasn't that long ago, but more importantly, was AFTER the Nov 23rd announcement. Things can change, and in this case, the release date seems to have changed to the 20th.
The release date is one of the few things EA really has control over in regards to RB, so I'll take their word on it over anyone else's, including the "Harmonix rep" that said the 23rd. And as long as EA is saying the 20th, don't expect GameStop to be updating their binders.

At this point, I'm starting to wonder. Perhaps MTV/EA sent out the November 23rd street date to retailers, and the brick-and-mortars shot back with a "Hell, no, we're not doing a major product rollout on Black Friday," causing EA to revise the date.
Oh well, wait and see.

Somewhat related, there's a store called The Sound Garden where I'm from (Syracuse, NY), and I think they have a 2nd location in Baltimore. Anyhow, I remember during high school, I would go get new CDs there a week or so before they were released, just to make my friends jealous. It seemed cool at the time, but I was sure the store was going to get in trouble at some point.
Skip ahead a few years, and they decide to expand into selling movies, not just CDs. And wouldn't you know it, they started selling DVDs a week or more before they were scheduled to be released.
I'm not sure how they slipped under the radar for doing this (maybe because they are a small 2 location company, and not a major chain?), but it appears that even though you're not SUPPOSED to sell things before X date, nobody really does anything about it when you do.

10-17-2007, 04:39 AM
In theory the publisher can withold or delay shipments of future titles to a retailer who is a known street date breaker, but otherwise there isn't any action to take.
In rare circumstances, publishers may make retailers sign an agreement complete with financial penalties for breaking a street date, but the last time I heard of that actually happening was around 7 or 8 years ago so not sure if that's even done anymore.

Worst that could happen is they get their EA shipments cut off (which is actually a pretty hefty penalty if they run out before the holidays are done).

that's what I was thinking - that seems pretty plausible - I'm sure the big guys - Best Buy and the like - don't want to have to deal with a large new shipment of the big bundled box on top of everything else. I would gladly pay and extra $25 to not have to go to any stores on Black Friday.

I don't understand why some are so caught up on the 23rd date and won't let it die. You can say EA's press release isn't official, but they have no reason to be confused when writing it, and the chances of them trying to type 23 and accidentally hitting the 0 instead is pretty slim.
The announcement of the 23rd came before the EA press release, so its not like that announcement supersedes EA's listed date. If anything, its the other way around.
Even worse, the date of the 23rd, that so many people are sticking to, was confirmed not by a press release, but by a "Harmonix rep". Whoever that is, their word is more credible than the publisher's. And even if the rep had the best intentions, and really thought the game was coming out on the 23rd, in the end, its not for Harmonix to decide. They could've been misinformed.
What's great though is EA is in charge of distributing the game, and I wonder who's date they'll go by when deciding when to start shipping.

I meant that one as a joke. But in any case, I would expect any store, GameStop included, to update their systems to the real release date, once its made official. If the 23rd is the official date, why isn't it in their computers? Can't be that they haven't fixed it yet, because they fixed the price.

1. Store computers are far from reliable
2. Amazon has it listed at 200 bucks, which is definetly wrong.
3. and EA press release, detailing ALL of their holiday releases, was probably written way before it was posted.
Fair enough. 1 was a joke. 2 is true now, but they had it at $169 before. 3 is still good, because your reasoning doesn't disqualify it. Its not like they had to decide at the last minute when to release it. They could've written the press release a month ago, but that doesn't mean the information within it can't still be true today.
In any case, what is your source for the 23rd? Nothing nearly as credible as an EA press release, regardless of when it was written.
Plus you left off the logic part, so I assume even you are somewhat convinced the 23rd makes no logical sense. ;)

the 200 dollar price tag is from target, they are so backwards check it yourself, Amazon stopped taking preorders a week or two ago.

Anyone else thinking this is still entirely up in the air, whether the date is the 20th or 23rd?
This thread has been on page 1 for the better part of a week, so I would think by now Sean or John would come in and lay the smack down, setting the record straight.

unless I missed it somewhere there isn't an official release date on rockband.com or on EA.com, so I guess its possible that the release date is speculation. Does anybody have a link to a source where harmonix or EA outright states that it will be released on the 23rd?

We’ve been told by our corporate chiefs that, actually, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will launch on November 23 at a cost of $169.99. That package will include the game, one guitar, a mic and a drum kit.

This doesn't change the fact that there can be a mix-up between MTV and EA. And in the end, it's EA's call, not MTV's.

Just to add more fuel to the fire...
Brad Shoemaker is the Rock Band guy over at Gamespot. On this week's Hotspot podcast, he casually mentions, "the release date was the 23rd, but then they pushed it back to the 20th". He does not cite a source on this.
The Gamespot website, however, still lists the 23rd as the release date.

3/4 of those sites state the 20th. Is EA ready for all the spam and bad PR from an inaccurate release date? They need to put the actual date on the home page www.rockband.com and from the EA launch portal http://www.ea.com/rockband/ to settle this issue once and for all, and they need to do it NOW.

I agree, it'd be nice if EA can come out and clear the release date up once and for all. Maybe it's IGN's big Day 5 announcement.:p

I don't understand why the release date is still an issue. Mass Effect's release date was announced over two months ago, yet RB due out just a month away is still not concrete certain. Do they just not care, or is there an actual problelm? If there is a problem, it wouldn't be wise to keep every one in the dark until the last minute... Unless, if the horribly handled tour is any indication, perhaps there is a terrible unannounced problem to worry about. Just imagine, everyone shows up at their local game stores on the 23rd to pick up their game, only to be told by the store manager that the game has been delayed (or even worse, to show up and be confronted by a sheet of white paper reading "no Rock Band 'til Feb 2008") Riots would insue nationwide!!

I'm guessing they set it to 23rd, because that was what would work best.
But after some negative feedback from retailers, who would prefer not to deal with that on Black Friday, demanded it be changed back.
Makes perfect sense, there seems to be enough evidence to prove it is the 20th, and that is a great thing for us.

I prefer this change, just because it means I can pick it up on the way home for Thanksgiving break from school. When it was Black Friday it would result in me trying to get it and work my Black Friday sales. Plus it gives me all week to unlock the songs before my Rock Band Party.... all are welcome, the beer will flow as freely as the rock will.

Well, GHIII has had a set date for a while now. It has a peripheral included. Perhaps that is a better comparison.

I assume the response would be "peripherals". I can understand how manufacturing guitars AND drums could complicate things, but not to the point where they can't get a concrete date with roughly a month to go. Except that they finally did, I guess.

Back in April 2007 Harmonix said, "We're gonna make a game called Rock Band"
In less than 6 months, it's done. Let's see you make a game like this.
/owned
EDIT: As far as GHIII is concerned. All they did was take an existing game engine and build on it. Making 1 peripheral, in which RedOctane has much more experience of making than HMX.
GHIII wasn't made from scratch.

Yes, it was. Harmonix wrote the code for GH1/GH2, and Activision had to come up with paid support arrangements with Harmonix to handle patches and DLC. GH3 was written from scratch by the Neversoft team.

Well that's news to me. I thought they just built on what they had because I thought the Guitar Hero franchise was bought by them, therefore, they took the rights to the coding and everything.
Oh wells, they still had an advantage on working on a sequel to a game. They didn't build on it coding wise, but they did just build on the ideas. (take the game, and add more to it) All the content, such as Career Mode, Face-Off, Pro-Face-off, wasn't something they had just come up with. They just took it and built on it.
We pretty much know what to expect for GHIII.
But for Harmonix to come up with all this unique touring modes, gaining fans, special types of gigs, character creation, etc. For them to do all that in such little time is very impressive.

I don't get it either!!? For me, it's just more songs to play! "but rock band has more instruments..." You know what? Sometimes I just wanna rock out alone...on a guitar! And now I'll have TWO new games to do that on...yippee! Can't wait for both.....(although Rock Band is better :p )

Harmonix revised the old GH engine to make rock band (might've done it from scratch, but i believe it was mentioned they used GH code). It shows too in the character models I think.
Neversoft started completely from scratch, and it shows in how different ( and ugly) gh3 looks.

I'm not making a versus situation.
Someone else started that when they were asking why it took so long for Rock Band to get a set release date. I was trying to say it took more to make this game than GHIII. There's just more content, and more features. That's plain to see through anyone's eyes.
And I'm not discrediting GHIII, I'll still be at the store buying that on release day as well.

GameStop has the "guaranteed street date delivery" policy that says that they'll refund your shipping plus 5% (or something like that) if you don't receive your game on the Street Date.
That would mean that they will have to ship them sometime prior to the 20th in order for you to get them on the 20th. Its highly likely that they'll go out on the 19th, but I wouldn't put it past them to ship on the 17th.
