When Rock Band comes out i'm probably going to try to purchase the game at wal-mart since I have a $75 gift card there, but seeing how it's black friday I find getting the game at wal mart that day nearly impossible, unless I order it online. So I plan on pre-ordering the bundle at gamestop kind of as an emergency back up plan. So basically I want to know how this works. Whats the minimum amount of money I can put down on the game? Do I only have to pay $5 to pre order and say I get the game at wal mart, can I cancel the game and get my money back? I'm just confused on this.

For most games it's $5, but considering this one is 170. I think my minimum was 20 or 25. One of those. I'm pretty sure the minimum was 25. And yeah, you can cancel at any time, even after release. But they usually only give you store credit.

If you pay cash, you can usually get your money back in cash.
And it was $25.

so could I go in the store after the game comes out and say "can I cancel my rock band preorder and get my money back" and be handed $25?

They might give you store credit. I'm not sure many stores give you cash anymore for returns of any sort.

I just did that with my GH III preorder at Gamestop since I pre-ordered at Best Buy. Cash in hand. It's your money.

Hang onto your receipt, but they can't hold your money. It happens all the time and they'll be cool.
peace.

I kind of figured that. They can't take my money without doing a service to me.

I had to cancel my pre-order at GameStop. They required a minimum of $25 when I signed up for it, and then I had to cancel it because I'll be home from school that Friday, and have to set up a pre-order at home.
In any case: a) it was $25, and b) they seemed disappointed that I was canceling the pre-order, and almost seemed to try to talk me out of it (Why don't you want the game anymore? Are you sure? Really? Are you really sure? etc.).
On a side note, a personal gripe, it's somewhat annoying that I can't pre-order over the phone. When I asked, the guy laughed at me and said "Nah bro, we can't do that". I didn't even know my brother worked at GameStop. :p
And since school is in North Carolina, and home is in New York, I now have to ask my mom to pre-order for me, which is awesome.

I, too, moved my pre-order from one store to another once they moved the release date. I told them why and they said, "ok."

Yeah. They asked if I wanted cash back, even though I didn't pay in cash. So they were pretty cool about giving it back (other than the sad faces, and random questions they asked).

I think after the game comes out you can only get store credit.
EDIT: Actually, you should just buy the game, then return it for cash (there ya go!)

Same deal. You are asking them to hold something your interested in. If you're no longer interested in it, as long as you have your receipt, they will give you your money back. Think of it like the guy above me said:
Gamestop has a 7 day return policy on unopened games. So, according to their rules, if you bought it and returned it they'd give you your money back. They'll just skip the hassle and refund your deposit.
As to the sad faces: itis a store. Any place that accepts returns usually ask a few questions and, if the sales person cares at all, will try to guilt you into keeping the purchase. Places that don't care? Walmart, target and virtually any place that has a dedicated line for returns. They make so much in volume they don't care if someone returns something.
Hope this helps.

I used to work for GameStop, and we had to refund deposits in the same form of payment that the customer used. Therefore, if you go to GameStop and preorder it, but go to Wal-Mart and find a copy, you can get a cash refund for your preorder at GameStop.
