First we need official word on what happened to the announced career spanning Metallica content Harmonix was supposed to be working on. Did the deal with Activision put an end to it?

And the new single?
HMXsean, HMXJohnlok, HMXanybody?

If it's still coming it should calm down the forums, if not, at least some of the anger will be directed at Activision.

As for me, I love Metallica. But I see two huge problems.....

1. With them headlining the game, Metallica will have near total control in the game. They still think their recent (post-Black) albums are good and that Napster killed the sales, and not the album's quality. Chances are they try to force a lot of their new material down our throats.

2. They will likely be re-recording stuff specifically for Activision (like GH: Aerosmith). I am of the belief that they are no longer capable of giving the same level of performance that they have in the past, and therefore the tracks won't be as good as the originals.

Hopefully HMX still has tracks coming and can use the original masters. If they lose Metallica, it isn't the end of the world.

There's still tons of great metal acts that can help mend the wound that losing Metallica would leave.

Maybe this thread should be merged or moved, but I tried to make it different than the "OMG No More Metallica!", or "I'm abandoning RB" threads

i didin't think of that. a game with songs all from St. Anger or anything like that would be horrible.

but why are people complaining? if you like Metallica that much, then just buy the game.

of course i guess some people don't want to buy new instruments. i sure for one don't.

Cliff Burton is rolling around in his grave and Dave Mustaine is finally glad he got kicked out.

Thats how I sum it up.

Shut. Up.

They aren't losing Metallica. Did Activision lose Metallica after they signed to put the single and other songs into Rock Band? No. Same case here.

Ive always like metallica, but not enough for me to "jump ship" to the guitar hero games. If we lose them its not the end of the world. It isnt like its led zeplin.....

I give the OP credit for actually posting something intelligent and thought-out, since that is a rarity on this subject.

That said, Metallica, multi-platinum marketing machine or not, is going to be a niche game compared to Aerosmith. The every-day type that plays these kinds of games(the ones whose wallets most game publishers target)doesn't know as many Metallica songs as Aerosmith songs. Not elevating one band above the other, but whether either band is quality in the eyes of people that post opinions on the internet, Joe Dabbles-In-Music-Games probably knows Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, maybe One or Unforgiven, that's about it.

I imagine also they can't exactly plan it out like the Aerosmith game since covering Metallica's whole career would involve both Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted(and even Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney if they were going back to the beginning), which would touch a lot of sore spots with the band in its current form. That might mean a lot of tracks in the game from "other bands that Metallica has played with over the years" or somesuch cop out.

If Activision comes to an agreement with them that actually makes it follow the band from its roots to its present(tragedy and mental breakdowns included)then I would still seriously consider a purchase...just not a $60 one.

Well I thought I remember reading that Rock Band got like 15 songs and their new single when finished for Rock Band around the time of E3 last year. Maybe its still possible to get the other 12, if they are under contract. We can only pray. Or, maybe HMX can sue!! Heh.

If GH: Aerosmith bombs maybe we won't see GH:Metallica at all.

So the track list will get... easier as their career progresses? I could make jokes about including a Drive the Bus mini game, or making you dodge pyrotechnics via quick time events, but Metallica has made it easy to hate on themselves with their actions over the years, so I won't. Plus I respect that band too much. It's like watching an old friend go down a horribly wrong path.

I will say that Lars looks like a cartoon character as it is... can't wait to see what caricature they make for him ;)

One can only hope.

No, Aerosmith is not that popular any longer, you only hear their music on Classic Rock or Adult Contemporary stations anymore... Even if Aerosmith bombs, Metallica will make up for it.

I'm not that huge a fan of the "mainly one band per game" concept, but I can get behind Aerosmith since I really like them. Metallica is ok (I don't own any of their music but I could still see getting the game).

GH is the nobrainer choice for me, though, since I have a PS2 and a Wii, neither of which support DLC (the PS2 rightly so, but the Wii?)

Whether or not I buy GH:Metallica is based on two factors:

1. If RB still gets a good deal of Metallica songs like they stated they would initially and GH:Metallica has a similar song list, I won't bother.

2. If GH: Metallica is mostly their new stuff, I won't buy it either.

However, if RB doesn't get any more Metallica songs, and/or at least half the tracks on GH: Metallica are from AJFA and earlier, I'll buy it for sure.

Based on GH getting exclusivity for Aerosmith, I imagine I'll end up buying GH: Metallica since we probably won't see any more in this game.

I don't see the point of GH Metallica. Wouldn't it be better to have the songs on Rock Band or even GH World Tour so we can play all parts? Unless GH Metallica is kinda like World Tour, ie has all parts.

I'd be curious where GH Metallica goes but I won't buy it for the same reason I won't buy GH Aerosmith. I don't want a game that has even half one particular artist. I'd rather have variety. Even if they do one for my favorite band I wouldn't want it. It'd be boring.

I think the Aerosmith could sell better, but not because people know more Aerosmith - because Metallica is going to be too damn hard for the "casual" player, especially with GH3 style charting.

Dream On (GH3), Train Kept a Rollin (RB) and Same Old Song & Dance (GH3) are cake compared to One (GH3) or Ride the Lightning (RB).

I didn't exactly mean people know more Aerosmith....just that more people know Aerosmith. They may know a lot of their music but not know it's actually them that play it(I'm like this with a lot of classic rock music). Whether young people today are very familiar with them or not, they are at least aware....and that includes them in the broad audience being aimed at for the game(people over 30 are automatically in the bracket).

It may still not sell well, but I think it has the potential to. And as you said, another thing that might work against GH:M is that by the music's very nature it will be very difficult, catering to the core GH community.

Now that I've thought about it, it will likely include the whole range of instruments, as GH:A is GHIII's expansion, GH:M will in all probability be GH:WT's expansion.

Sean confirmed that Harmonix's previously announced plans with Metallica are unchanged:

I look forward to being able to pick and choose the early Metallica tracks, and not having their '90s stuff forced on me in a disc bundle.
