How do you know what notes you can hopo? I've heard of a black ring but I'm not sure...

Look at notes, do it in practice mode on slowest if you have too. On some notes there will be a small black ring inside the note, on ho/pos there isnt one.

The notes that have no black circle on them are HO/PO. AKA the blue, yellow, blue, yellow on the right fret board

A visual aid.
The closest red note is a ho/po because there is no black outline around the white top of the note.
The next red note does have a black ring around it meaning you have to strum that note.
The remaining 5 notes are all ho/po's due to the lack of the black ring at the top of the note.

Ho/Po rock once you master them man, less strumming is hawt :p and yeah as everyone said.
If it has a black ring you HAVE to strum if there isn't a black ring you don't have to strum.
Also keep in mind if you have a lot of Ho/Po (Lets take Thunderhorse Verse 3 for instance). While you're doing the HO/POs if you mess up and miss a note you have to strum the next note, or the Ho/Po chain won't continue.

If you want to practice HO/PO's I suggest unlocking and playing Less Talk, More Rokk. It's almost entirely HO/PO (in hard/expert) and it's relativley easy. If you look at the note chart it seems like it was designed almost specifically to be a warm-up exercise...

You guys make it seem like I'm a n00b. I have beaten Expert and unlocked almost everything (damn log and that one medium 5 star guitar...)
No one ever told me this... *cries*

You've gotten the log and you didn't know how to tell an HO/PO from a normal note? Wow man you must kick ass lol. Btw, I rather practice my HO/PO on Frankenstein or w,e. You have to buy that pack though.

All the more reason to have HO/POs a different size. Hooray Rock Band!

Will the different size mess up timing? I mean... The point is to get the note right on target, with it being smaller would you have to wait like.. 0.3 seconds longer?

The width is what's different. Besides, you should be matching up the centers, and paying more attention to the actual rhythm rather than the visual orientation.

I do pay attention to the rhythm more, Makes it easier to play with your back facing the TV :p (and to show off) But some people tend to look at the visuals and study them more than listening so I was just wondering about that. I imagine it won't effect anything though.
