Report: Rock Band bundled up 'til '08

For months now, retailers have been listing the individual tools of the shredding man's trade for Harmonix, MTV, and EA's Rock Band. However, Canadian game site The Bits Bytes Pixels and Sprites is now reporting that gamers will only have the $169 all-in-one bundle option when Rock Band takes the retail stage on November 23 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. (A PlayStation 2 version is set to follow on December 10 for $159.99.) Speaking to a Harmonix representative at a recent PlayStation Holiday Press Preview Event in Toronto, BBPS said that the publisher doesn't plan on busting out individual instruments until early 2008.

The Harmonix rep told BBPS that initially offering Rock Band as a bundle only was due to a couple of retail factors. The first, BBPS states, is that "the components in the bundle are not cheap and thus creating a bundle and three other separate packages (guitar, drums and vocals) would increase costs which could lead to less bundles available at ship." Second, retailers weren't overly keen on having four large packages taking up precious store space during the jam-packed holiday season.

Selling Rock Band in bundle-only form presents a quandary for prospective virtual fretters. Namely, since the Rock Band bundle only contains one guitar, a drum kit, and a mic, it isn't immediately clear how owners will be able to play as a full quartet, short of buying two bundles or using a Guitar Hero controller, which is supposedly compatible with the game. A representative for Rock Band developer Harmonix had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment as of press time.
