"Industry expectations for "The Heartbreak Kid," the date movie that re-teamed him with the Farrelly brothers (the duo who made him a megastar in "There's Something About Mary"), called for a $20 million to $25 million opening for the film. Instead, "Kid," which cost north of $60 million to make, managed only $14 million in the U.S. and Canada -- heartbreaking, indeed.
But there's more. Total industry ticket sales were only $80 million for the Oct. 5 weekend the film opened, a whopping 27% below the same weekend the year before, according to research firm Media by Numbers. That's the industry's worst performance for an October weekend since 1999. Overall, domestic receipts are down 6% from last fall.
Blame the Master Chief.
Many film executives are convinced audiences stayed home to play Microsoft's carpal-tunnel classic, "Halo 3," which went on sale on Sept. 26. The game sold an astonishing $170 million worth of copies on its first day, before going on to sell well over $300 million. "

My theory is that it's because the Farrelly Brothers haven't made a good movie since TSAM, and the boxoffice is worse than last year because movie in general are just getting worse :)
Seriously Hollywood, how about making some quality ORIGINAL movies once in a while and giving them a marketing push larger than $5 and 10 theatres in Ohio?

I agree with that 100%.
Hollywood is expecting people to go see movies simply because a certain person made it or the sexiest actress of the year stars in it.
Did anyone watch the previews for The Heartbreak Kid? bleh...

Yes, movies are making less money because of the Master Chief, its not because of that alot of people don't find Ben Stiller funny, or most of this crap they call films is rehashed garbage.

Movie prices have risen so much recently in my area, it's cheaper to buy a full DVD rather than one or two adult tickets.
This also comes at time when originality and quality are extremely lacking.
I've got a decent home theater. I'd rather build myself a nice movie library than get ripped for 8$ for a cup of popcorn.

Indeed it's about $30 to go to the movies. No thanks.

Unless it's a movie I've been dying to see and can't wait, I'll shell out $10 dollars for a ticket and just bring my own snacks. I do have a theater 20 miles away that plays movies about a month before they come out on DVD and are out of theater for $2. And only $1 on Tuesday.

Its like 7.50 after a certain time here in Florida (8.50 for regular and seniors get like 5 bucks I think). However, I refuse to pay for movie candy. I can take that 3 bucks for one Sour Patch Kids pack and buy 3 Sour Patch Kids packs at the 7-11 across the street and sneak them in.

Alright lets say a movie makes about 150mill and since halo made 300mill we'll compare who sold more. The movie, why? Because the tickets are cheaper. Even though it's half of what halo does it still sold more.
150mill = roughly 8.3k people after doing ticket prices and such.
300mill = only about 3.5k people. affter adding all the prices and doing the math.
Anyways back on topic, maybe they should just realize their movie sucked ass and didn't look interesting? Not that many people like Ben Stiller anyway.

The price-gouging system on candy is how they make their money back. The studios charge ridiculous amounts of money for the reels and the cost of the ticket offsets half of the per-person cost for the first few days of the film.
In Japan, they charge you the full per-person cost for the film, so one person going to the movies costs about $25 or so per ticket. That's why, if you watch anime, it's a big deal date when someone takes someone else to the movies. It costs more than going out to eat.
The different corporates don't like to accept that their respective bubbles are bursting, and thus they find an easy target to blame. Nobody's buying CDs at $15 per disc? That's because they're stealing the music! Nobody's watching movies at $9 per ticket? They're stealing the movies! Well, since piracy is actually declining at present, they have to find a new scapegoat. Master Chief is popular right now, right? It must be his fault! That virtual bastard...
