View Full Version : PS2 Questions and Answers?

This is getting ridiculous.
Lately, it seems topics asking questions about the PS2 release attract the 360 and PS3 owners which they steer into their own console wars topic.

Frankly, I'm getting sick of it. Whenever I try to get any information about the PS2 release, I have to weed through all this garbage, looking for some answers and concerns. All this console war talk is just getting the topics I am most interested in locked.

360 and PS3 owners, this topic is NOT for you. I really do not want to hear how good your system is or how bad the other systems are. I want to hear about how MY console will be working with this game.

<hr width="60%">
Now for the questions that have gone unanswered (as far as I could tell while weeding though these console wars) are ...

General Information
>> When will the PS2 version be released?
December 11, 2007

>> Will the PS2 setlist be different than the other consoles?
Unknown. Rumor floating around that it will be different.

DLC
>> How are they going to handle future song releases for the ps2?
I heard that it MIGHT be separate disks. I have not seen the timing posted here as to when the PS2 will have these disks after the others can get their's via DLC.

>> Can the optional PS2 Hard Drive be used for DLC?
Unknown.

Peripherals
>> How are we going to plug in 4 instruments if it only has two controller ports?
Speculation.
I have seen speculation on using the multi-tap which allows up to four (4) controllers to be used in some games. I have also seen some speculation on using the two (2) USB ports on the PS2. I assume that the microphone would be one of these since previous games used the headset in a USB port.

>> Will older Guitar Hero controllers (GH1, GH2, weird 3rd party knock-offs, etc) be compatible?
Unknown.

the following chart is a work in progress

If I have missed any PS2 questions or answers, I would be happy to update this first post.

HMX/Apples,

Would it be possible to just delete those posts that are not on topic here? Those starting these console wars may get the impression that by starting a console war in a topic is a quick way to just get it locked. That's not fair to the opening poster nor anyone else involved in the true discussion.

360/PS3 owners,
You can have every other topic here to play in. I just want this one.

Thanks

Is it just me, or is this your first post here in a while, Huskie?

Very good post though.

I'm pretty sure that the PS2 version is coming with a hub for using the instruments together.

Seeing as the PS2 only had 2 USB ports, and the new 40gig PS3 will only have 2, I'd be surprised if every bundle didn't come with a USB hub. They're very cheap to produce.

As for additional content for PS2, I'd be surprised if HMX makes a comment on this until after the initial launch. EA wants it's patrons to jump into next gen as soon as possible. Withholding information is just the type of tactic EA would use to accomplish this.

The only question I haven't seen answered is how DLC would be handled. That's not something that may not be announced right away since it is released 3 weeks after some other consoles that will go unnamed.

A mulit-tap should solve the controller slot problems, or if not even a USB hub, and HMX may include something in the bundle like they are doing with a certain Microsoft console.

I've also read something about the setlist may not be exactly the same on the PS2 so that may be something to keep an eye on which was a question you didn't list up there.

There will be no DLC for RB on the PS2. The memory cards only hold 8MB of information. I'd imagine less than 2% of PS2 users out there have the HDD attachment (as it was bundled with FFXI, which failed miserably on the PS2).

I have the HDD myself, but that's only because someone gave it to me (for free) when I still worked at GameStop. Without a storage space, not to mention a means of downloading information (no Playstation Store available for the PS2) I can't fathom DLC being a part of the PS2's version of RB.

This isn't meant as a flame, or to sound condescending, but Downloadable Content is a staple of the Next Generation of gaming (which by now is certainly the Current Gen). The hardware just is not in place on the PS2 to make DLC a reality.

I'll try and keep an eye on this thread to insure it is not derailed. The last PS2 thread definately got way out of bounds and I didn't catch it.

What if you own a PS3/PS2 or a 360/PS2. That would still include those people. Hmm. Hmm! Are we still excluded?

I haven't posted in a while. The site has grown so much and things are hard to find now. I usually just pop in here trying to find PS2 information.

Are you going to brag about how your non-PS2 console is better than another?
We all know the PS2 is old, outdated and does not have the capabilities to do DLC without some form of storage unit or Store to buy it at. That is why the questions are being asked.

One thing specific to the PS2 I've seen asked is the compatibility of older Guitar Hero controllers (GH1, GH2, wierd 3rd party knock-offs, etc). I thought I heard they were supported, but can't say for sure.

If it wasn't for the original release info saying that there would be no PS2 version of Rock Band, I would not have got an Xbox 360 from my bro in law as a late bday gift, and the wife would've made me get it for the PS2, so for that, I'm thankful (cause now i have a 360).

But I still play the sh!t out of my PS2 (probably more than my 360), I have a lot of great games for it. And I've been pondering the idea of RB for PS2 utilizing the Hard Drive that came with FFXI, and possibly even making an RB-branded HDD. I don't see why not, really. The HDD was the key peripheral for the PS2 that sadly did not take off. I've been contemplating buying one used just so I could stop using memory cards.

I really don't see why you wouldn't be able to get DLC on PS2 if you have the HDD.

wow, that's a lot of acronyms. :D

Calm down! Don't make me give you a flea bath! I use my PS2 as much if not more than my PS3. SO there! HA! TAKE THAT!

Thanks for the information on the hard drive. I forgot that was an option during my later Socom days. I've added it to the list of questions.
This brings up a point.
I had not looked into the hard drive when it was first offered. I do remember seeing that it could be used for game patches and new maps for Socom.
If you could download new maps for that game, were they free?
If not, how were you be able to pay for them using the NIC?
There was no store and you were only connecting to the Socom servers.

Could HMX do something similar with the PS2 community purchasing offline and using the PS2 to download DLC, assuming security and purchase confirmation can be figured out?

Flea bath :D

Hmmm....I don't know if they would be THAT willing to go that far with the ps2. I see the expansion discs coming before hard drive compatibility....though it would be a good reason for ppl to get one.....if they still make them.

But, if they did go that far, talk about a great company.:)

The controller port issue has been settled I believe. I remember hearing something about that.

I remember hearing that the controllers will be compatible too.

Thanks for making this thread, I hope it stays updated....I tried making a couple threads about it, one recently and well.....you know how that goes.

I'm really not sure if i should post this question here, but it's the best match the search enginge could give me. It's a PS3-PS2 related question.

Is the PS3 Hardware going to be compatible with the PS2?

Right now i own both systems. And i really want to play this on my ps2 (Since it's in my room) but if i buy the PS2 bundle i'm facing two problems.

The fact that i wouldn't be able to play the PS3 version without buying a separate bundle.

And that maybe the future sequels of this game will be next-gen only (or current gen, depends on how you look at it).

So i rephrase my question. Will i be able to play PS2 Rock Band with PS3 Hardware? I'm looking for a solution to play both version of the game with just one set of instruments.

this is a tough one to answer but as i see it i would say if you have a U.S PS3 that has the full BC via hardware and that the PS3 controllers work with the PS2 version of rock band, then yes i can't see a problem why it wouldn't work.. if your PS3 uses emulation for BC then it's up to Sony to update the PS3 firmware to provide support for the PS2 version whether they will do that is unknown.

So you just said that i can play both games on the ps3 with the ps3 instruments if i have the old PS3 (which i have).

But my concern is, that if i buy the PS3 instruments, will i be able to use those in my PS2 via usb hub.

It's usually better if you say nothing, if you really have nothing pertaining to what the poster was asking.

Note* I realize that this post has nothing to do with what the poster was asking, but that doesn't really make me a hypocrite. I'm just pointing out the fact that you might cause a bit of aggression by trying to get under Husky's skin, if that's what you're trying to do.

Hmx haven't said how the PS2 version is being done yet.. they may use the PS2 ports and not the USB if that is the case you wouldn't be able to use the PS3 controllers.. if HMX use USB for the PS2 then I cant see any reason why the PS3 Controllers wouldn't work.

Are you talking about adding a hard drive to the old "fat" PS2 with a network adapter? You can use any IDE hard drive (as long as the IDE and power connections line up with the network adapter... you can search online for recommended drives), I have a 120 GB hard drive in mine, on which I copied games using HDLoader. Great load times, less wear and tear on the PS2 drive (and especially the cheap drive tray).

Not all games work with HDLoader, but all the GH games have so far. And for the record, I own all the GH games legally. I just like the convenience.

Excellent questions on cross platform compatibility and use of older GH guitars. I've added a chart to the first post which we can 'fill in the blanks' when more information is known.

It will take a lot more than that to get under my skin. I've seen a lot worse in my days. Apples did say he'll try to keep an eye on this topic so it doesn't go downhill for which I am grateful.

Thanks nicko68.
HDLoader sounds interesting. I just need to find more information on it, if not for Rockband DLC (or expansion disks in PS2's case), I'm liking what you said about load times and reduced wear and tear on original disks.

1) Because, when you grow up, you have more important priorities for your money - things like mortgage, car payment, bills... once you're no longer dependent on your parents for everything and have to earn your own way, you might understand why some people would rather not spend three times as much for a console when they can play the game on the console they already have.

2) Because the main point of the game isn't playing "paper dolls", it's about rocking out. And even without DLC, there's 58 ways to do that even in the PS2 version. Same note charts, same songs...

And what do pretty graphics matter anyhow? I don't know about you, but I'm mostly watching the notes.

Don't get me wrong, the PS3/XBox versions are an improvement and certainly more appealing, but the core gameplay is the same on any platform.

And let's be honest - how many of you started all this on Guitar Hero on the... PS2? Why spit on where you came from?

Ps3 instruments work perfectly with ps2 rockband (guitar, microphone and drum kit) and also my wireless GH ps2 controller (enconre edition i think). But the guitar for rockband doesn't work on any guitar hero games. Hope i helped
