View Full Version : Another song poll

Since we're all waiting around for the IGN news, I figured I'd start up something else to kill some time. Yesterday, the announcement of Flirtin' With Disaster was met with mixed reactions, so it got me wondering, are there certain songs that people here really like, and others that the general consensus is that they're not so awesome? To find out, I figured we can take a little poll, and I'll count up the votes later to see.
If you want to join in on the fun, just list your three favorite, and three least favorite songs (six total), with 1 being favorite/least favorite, 2 being second favorite/second least favorite, etc. Feel free to add comments if you want too. And don't get mad at people if they list your favorite song as one of your least favorites.
Final note, since Next To You, and Foreplay/Long Time are all but officially confirmed, feel free to include those, if applicable.
Here's mine:
Favorites:
1) Foreplay/Long Time - something about Boston and Rock Band just works so well
2) Won't Get Fooled Again - was my favorite until the other day
3) Tom Sawyer - seems like it will be fun to play, and it hasn't been ruined by IGN yet
Least Favorites:
1) Black Hole Sun - the way this song sort of drags along (the drums) seems like a party buzzkill to me
2) Creep - my friend once told me "If you're ever having a great day, and want to f*ck it up, listen to Radiohead", and I think there's some truth there
3) Suffragette City - for a while it seemed like the only song we heard, and it got played out for me, I can't think of it now without thinking of 4 HMX people playing it, not to mention the whole "Woooooo" noise
If people are interested, in a few days I'll compile any/all results and let people know how the songs are ranked.

I find it tough to pick out 3 songs as "least favorites". HMX has done a fine job, in my eyes, of picking a solid and diverse lineup so far.

Wanted Dead or Alive
Black Hole Sun

Least favorites:

hahaha!
ahem, okay
Favorites:
#1: Foreplay/Long Time - actually never heard it til it was announced, but man is that gonna be fun to play
#2: Vasoline - "dun dun, dun dun, dun dun, dun dun..." ... :D
#3: Epic - Every once in a while I get really into this song and the buildup, with those hints of the "what-is-it!" part, I get so excited...its an awesome song.
Least Favorites:
#1: Blitzkrieg Bop - /puts on flame suit...it's just not my thing. It gets boring >.>
#2: Maps - I actually like this song. It's just not gonna be that fun to play..
#3: Should I Stay or Should I Go - I dunno....Just don't love this song, it doesnt do it for me. On the plus side, when Blitzkieg Bop and this are the "worst" songs (I actually like all of these, there could be much worse choices) then you're in good shape.

3. Maps. Just not into the song.

It's funny that you should mention everyone waiting for IGN, because I can see that board traffic here is way above normal. Obiviously this week long stunt has garnered some attention. :D
As far as "favorite/least favorite announced songs"... I haven't actually seen enough of them to have an informed decision. I like keeping a certain element of surprise/suspense, so I've only seen the 30 second IGN spots and the occasional youtube music video.
Based on my limited impressions, I'll go with:
Favorites:
Enter Sandman
Highway Star
Wanted Dead or Alive
Non-Favorites:
In Bloom - Bad memories of Heart Shaped Box
Some combination of the GH3 duplicate songs - just because duplication is bad. No fault of the song or anyone else.

Nothing against Foo Fighters. I just don't like that song, and I realize I'm in a minority here.
I've listened to it many times, and I just don't "get it". It always sounds like an incredibly generic, pop-rock radio song. Almost like muzak.
The master track for this song, like Vasoline, feels overproduced to me. The string parts tend to meld together, which I don't think will work as well for the Rock Band game.
Compare this to the opening of Gimme Shelter, where each and every note played feels like it's *****ing you with a knife. I think these songs with the raw, distinct sounds will be more fun to play.

I feel really bad for everyone who can't rock out to Pixies and Bowie - kids today...
Anyway...
Basically, I like it all except the terrible 90s line-up. So much great Rock from the 90s totally ignored for faceless pop-grunge (see: Dinosaur Jr, Monster Magnet, New Bomb Turks, The Grifters, Teengenerate, Folk Implosion, The Oblivians, Hellacopters, etc).
Psyched:
1. David Bowie - Suffragette City
Wham, Bam, Thank you Ma'am! Great guitar riff, great drumming, great lyrics and vocals - this song is insanely great.
2. The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
Again, insanely great - I'm even more psyched about Baba O'Riley from the DLC, though.
3. Beastie Boys - Sabotage
Awesome guitar riff, sweet lyrics - a rock hip-hop song that doesn't suck - it doesn't get much more fun than that.
4. The Rolling Stones -- Gimme Shelter
One of their best tracks (a hell of a lot better than Can't You Hear Me Knocking from GHII) - great apocalyptic lyrics, awesome back up vocals, pounding drums, sweet guitar lines. This is going to be great.
5. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
It's Sabbath, so it's obviously great - there's a lot of other songs of theirs that I'd be a lot more excited about, but this is quite good.
6. The Hives - Main Offender
A perfect rock song - A big sing-along chorus, crunching guitars - it's derivative, but in a great way.
Others that should be fun: Pixies - Wave of Mutilation, Mountain - Mississippi Queen, The Strokes - Reptilia
Not Psyched:
1. Stone Temple Pilots - Vasoline
I've thought this one sucked since it came out - never seen the appeal of this lame proto-Nickelback grungy frat rock.
2. Foo Fighters - Learn to Fly
They have plenty of ok songs to choose from, but this is amongst their most boring and mediocre - it's so faceless and generic.
3. Rush - Tom Sawyer
Anyone with a soul can agree that Rush is awful - this is a hell of a lot better than crappiest-song-ever YYZ from GHII, though.
4. Queens of the Stone Age - Go With the Flow
I'm not a huge fan, but I've heard some stuff of theirs that has some killer guitar - this one is really, really dull though. The drums sound kinda fun, though.
5. The Clash - Should I Stay or Should I Go?
I love the Clash - this song sucks ass, though - they did it mostly as a retro joke, and it sounds even moreso now. Simplistic and repetitive and seemingly pretty dull for all the instruments. The only moderately interesting parts are for the back up vocals, which I 'd bet you won't be doing.
6. Metallica - Enter Sandman
There's at least a dozen Metallica songs across their career that could be cool, but this one is just so lame - I don't think I can sing those moronic Snow White lyrics with a straight face.
Others I don't really want to play: Garbage - Celebrity Skin, The Smashing Pumpkins - Cherub Rock, Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun, Coheed and Cambira - Welcome Home

10-16-2007, 07:47 AM
Fair enough - I guess that's the charm of the track listing - something for everyone. One thing I think is really great about this game is that there's nothing at all in the track listing that I REALLY hate - just some boring stuff. GHII (and III for what it's worth) is full of songs that I actually dread having to play - YYZ, obviously, that terrible, terrible Beast and Harlot, Suicidal Tendencies' Institutionalized, the My Chemical Romance turd...
Overall even the songs I want to play the least from RB are songs I'm more interested in that half of GHII.
I'm most psyched about the DLC, though - there's a ton of great stuff on Nevermind (Breed comes to mind), Who's Next, I'm sure they'll get a decent Metallica song or two - even some of the latter Fuel-era stuff could be fun.

I have trouble agreeing with someone who classifies Monster Magnet and Teengenerate as 'good 90s rock' and goes on to say Main Offender is a 'perfect rock song', nevermind the fact that you think Rush is awful.
To each their own. :)
LongDarkBlues

Well, for the record, Monster Magnet has sucked ever since Dopes to Infinity way back in 1995, but those first couple of albums are killer. Check out Medicine from Spine of God, or Negasonic Teenage Warhead from Dopes - those songs rock the ass off of most of these songs. And who doesn't like Teengenerate? Those Japanese garage rock bands rule - I hope there's some not-region-exclusive DLC for Japan, because that **** is great. Yeah, Main Offender is a rip-off of a hundred better bands, but the guitars are great, the vocals are fun, the drums pound away - it's 'perfect' in the all-the-right-ingredients way - perhaps 'quintessential' is a better way of putting it.
I've had the Rush debate a million times by now and I suppose I will simply never understand it. YYZ is wanky elevator music, for chrissakes.

I find Monster Magnet's stuff tolerable (and Twin Earth is probably the song of theirs I enjoy the most), but in some bizarre way they seem to remind me of Billy Talent with less post-processing and a less nasally vocalist. ;)
I guess I just find their music fairly generic for whatever reason. It never really 'stood out' to me.
Granted, they're better than a lot of crap that's out there, but when I think "great 90s rock" they aren't on my immediate list (although, that being said, it's not exactly a long list).

Welcome Home: Everything in this song meshes together well. A blast for me to play IRL, so I assume it'll be just as fun in-game.
Cherub Rock: Upbeat, diverse, and, once again, loads of fun to play IRL.
Wanted Dead or Alive: Everyone knows this song, c'mon. Bound to be a blast.
Least Favorites
Enter Sandman: Yes, it's Metallica. It's also the most overplayed, overrated metal song of all time. Sure, that won't stop me from rocking out to it, but I wish it could've been something a little better, like Master of Puppets or Sanitarium.
Black Hole Sun: Slow and monotonous.
Celebrity Skin: Anything involving Courtney Love also involves pain and suffering.

Well, I think I'll stop the polling right here, and based on everyone who voted, this is what I've found.
I'm only going to list the Top 10 favorites and least favorites, because theres that whole gray area in between, where its hard to really put them in order (because people don't hate them, nor necessarily like them). Anyhow, this is what we've all concluded:
1. Won't Get Fooled Again (The Who)
2. Epic (Faith No More)
3. Foreplay / Long Time (Boston)
4. Cherub Rock (Smashing Pumpkins)
5. Highway Star (Deep Purple)
6. Say It Ain't So (Weezer)
7. Dani California (RHCP)
8. Don't Fear The Reaper (BOC)
9. Detroit Rock City (Kiss)
10. Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones)
WGFA was by far the top song, and the top 5 or so were pretty clear cut. Things got murkier a bit below that.
1. Celebrity Skin (Hole)
2. Main Offender (The Hives)
3. Suffragette City (David Bowie)
4. Learn To Fly (Foo Fighters)
5. Welcome Home (Coheed and Cambria)
6. I Think I'm Paranoid (Garbage)
7. Blitzkrieg Bop (The Ramones)
8. Wave of Mutilation (The Pixies)
9. Here It Goes Again (OK Go)
10. In Bloom (Nirvana)
Note that these are the 10 LEAST FAVORITE, not 10 MOST HATED. Big difference, I think. Except for Celebrity Skin, which received so many "least favorite" votes that maybe it is hated, and deserves the top 3 spots for itself.
Also, Enter Sandman, Vasoline, Creep and Welcome Home all managed to receive votes as "most favorite" and "least favorite" which goes to show what a taste in music can mean.**
**I realize that WGFA also was listed as someone's least favorite, but I'll agree with others that something was wrong there, and it clearly must have been a mistake.:)

Thanks for running that, toefer. Results look pretty solid, except that I'm sorry that demo fatigue has created such a backlash against Suffragette City. On its own terms, it's a great song, and will be fun to play.
