View Full Version : "Learn to Fly" gold stars?

Looking for a tip or some help...
I've FC'd "Learn to Fly" (Foo Fighters) several times, but I have not yet received gold stars. I don't even have any unused OD left at the end.
I noticed that the top scores on the leaderboard are 15k+ above the score threshold... so I know it's apparently possible...
What part(s) of the song are the best to use OD for the best scoring?
On a side note, I think it's total BS that an FC on ANY song won't yield gold stars. If you make it through a song flawlessly and use up all your OD power, there's no reason why that shouldn't be the minimum score to get gold stars...
Thanks!

Anywhere where there are long stretches of rapid chords is good. More notes equals more points.

That's lame you FC'd it for no Gold Star. I have been one note off of FC'ing that song on Guitar quite a few times...annoyed the hell out of me and I "assumed" that one note was the reason I wasn't Gold Starring it.
Anyhow...as far as using Overdrive goes, you definitely want to try to use it immediately before sections that have multiple/numbers power chords where you are holding down three frets at the same time. A single three-chord is worth three times as much as a single fret note, I believe. So...add 8x multiplier onto that difference and it gets rather significant.
Good luck!

Thanks, Parodygm & Melchiah... I definitely know about the "faster streams of notes are worth more in OD"... :)
Didn't realize that power chords were worth more as well... Kind of assumed that, but never really watched to see the scoreboard move...
I really felt like I was using my OD at the right times in this song. It didn't seem like I was losing that much to "drain" (sustained notes or no notes)...
And thanks screwtop... I'll check those out!
Thanks!

Maybe try that path? It's obviously crucial to hit the busiest chord sections. Yellow is OD gathering, blue is activation areas.

Yowza! I need those for a BUNCH of songs! ;) The thing I usually forget to do is count how many OD gathering sections there are in a song... and I end up with some unused OD because I'm not to the halfway mark to activate it...
And, of course, looking at the scorehero links screwtop provided... there they are! :) Thanks again!

Welcome to the world of bass FCing. ;) I can't begin to count the number of songs I've gotten 100% FC on with no gold, either because it's not possible or because I didn't squeeze absolutely perfectly. Hell, I finally just got gold on Go With The Flow on bass for the first time in the four months I've had the game, and that was a stroke of luck.
Anyway, there should at least be a way to track which songs you've got 100% on in the song list -- gold stars due to their nature in RB just don't cut it.

Yep, ScoreHero is your friend. There are some kindly provided note charts and paths included on the appropriate threads. After initially balking at using the score tracking database there to input my scores, I've relented and used it extensively. It's a good way to see at a glance how close to GS you are on songs and where you might be able to improve your overall solo career score.
Nice to see another player in Oregon. In the Portland area?

Yeah, I definitely agree with that. I suggested in other threads in the past that there be something else, perhaps Silver Stars? To signify that you got 100%. And maybe if you got both 100% AND Gold Stars (which would usually seem to be the case)... maybe it's the 5 stars in the format:
Gold-Silver-Gold-Silver-Gold
:)
Just a thought...

Learning the right times to OD for the maximum amount of points not only helps with getting gold stars but also when playing score duel matches. Both of you can play the song perfectly but the person that uses their OD more effectively will win.
In the case of "Learn to Fly," as others have said, use it when you're doing the 2-3 note chord changes during the choruses. Sometimes during those same times you're playing the lead guitar part with single notes and you may be tempted to use OD since you'll have at least half a bar. However, wait just a few bars till the thick power chords come in to use it.

I just use an Excel spreadsheet that tracks my scores... :) I'm a nerd that way...
Yep! Work downtown and live near Troutdale...
