So, I'm in my senior year of high schooand have been trying to think of a senior project.
It dawned on me. A Battle of the Bands using Rock Band. I'm really curious as to if people would take it seriously in that type of setting.
Going to probably do a 3 song set per band, stage presence counts, and all instrument must be played (However you can have less than 4 members as long as all instruments are used). Will have to think of more such as difficulty level, etc, but so far it seems to have generated a good response from the students Ive "polled" and it seems like I could get a good turn out.

Hoping to have a cheap entry fee and then donate it to either local music venues (that have gone under multiple times, effectivly closing down local music) or to the schools music programs.

So What do you guys think? Advice/comments?

I'd say go for it.
If someone at my school would be doing that sort of thing I'd definitely do it.

I think it's a great idea. I've seen tons of contests/benefits/etc here at my college where fraternities or school organizations will sponsor Guitar Hero 2 competitions for a prize, with entry fees going to some cause. I think Rock Band would be a great way to extend this concept.

Advice/comments?

Maybe donate it to an English class instead? Ghandi vs Gandhi. J/K

Sounds like a good idea, but is there an incentive for people to pay to enter? Do they win a prize, or just pride? If you're doing it for charity, I'm sure you can ask around at some local stores, and get them to donate some prizes (a CD, DVD, whatever).

I've worked on some charity poker tournaments in college, and its very surprising what you can get stores to donate (iPods, TVs, etc).

Ha, that name is from SOCOM for ps2, Gandhi was taken as a name, thus born Ghandi.

Yeah, I need to look into prizes, I should be able to get some cds from the local music shops, maybe some pics/drum sticks from the mom and pop instrument places too, Ill talk to em once I get planning done/turn in my outline form.

I was hoping I could get HMX/MTV to give me a banner or a couple shirts for hosts/etc seeing as they're giving the shirts away at the tour events.

Ill upload a flyer once I get them finished, see what you guys think.

Its a great idea I think. I would totally sign up if I was at your school. It would be so much fun, and the best part is not just people who know how to play instruments can sign up, anyone can. If you end up getting a ton of people to show up Rock Band battle of the bands could be awesome!

Definitely go for it. I'm likely going to try to host some sort of competition in my town sometime after the game is launched. Guitar Hero tourneys were always a blast, I can't imagine how much fun it would be with Rock Band!

I wonder if Harmonix will do anything like the G.H.O.U.L. for Rock Band?

This is an excellent idea. Double kudos for thinking of your local music scene! Hope it all works out!

awesome idea. Defintiely do the benefit thing with either the local music scene or your schools music program. You'd probably get more leniancy from your school (using school property and materials) if you did it for the schools music program. This could turn into something really awesome! If you were to make it known city-wide, I think you could definitely get enough people to justify using yours schools auditorium. Like others said, just give people a reason to come, i.e. prizes, raffles, etc.. As the project starts to take form, I'd contact Harmonix as well.

Just a note on logistics: have two stages. I played in several Battle of the Bands(s?), and having two stages keeps things moving. One band sets up while the other plays, so there's no stop to the Rawk.

Make sure to get the AV stuff squared away as well. I'd have a projector in-between the stages in the front. Then just switch the input to the projector to the current band. Make sure you have AV splitters and everything works beforehand (probably on a small-scale).

And sponsors are awesome. Just sell sponsor to get their logo on your shirt. Fill up the back of a shirt and you can easily pay for the cost of making the shirts. Give one to each band member, then sell the rest for a few $$$ and that's all gravy for your cause. You could probably manage to get sponsored prizes, as well.

If you get the logistics down early and get a good turnout it should be Awesome*.
