View Full Version : What foot to use bass pedal with?

I'm not a drummer so I'm not really familiar with what foot you use if you're doing open-handed or cross-handed drumming. I will say that I'm not your traditional right-handed person: I write with my right hand and throw with my right hand, but I play pool and GH like a lefty. So I'm not really in a position to judge which is the right foot.
Any thoughts from people with experience?

I've wondered this quite a bit myself. I always assumed it would be your dominant foot. But I keep hearing the pedal tires you out, so maybe it would be worthwhile to learn to switch off feet between songs.

I feel like if I were to use my dominant foot, I'd just be tapping along to the beat subconsciously, instead of learning to control my tapping to go with the bass pedal notes (in which case, I would want to use my non-dominant foot).

It's like the first time you try skateboarding; you don't know if you skate regular or goofy. It's what ever works best for you. Just try practice mode with your right foot, then try the same song and difficulty with your left foot.

The question is, do you want to cross over to real drumming at some point? If so, Most standard kits (as far as I can tell) people use their right foot on the bass drum and their left foot on the high hats...
Not that you can't set up a kit any which way you want, but You asked for a suggestion, and there it is.
as for dominant vs non-dominant: you have to learn limb independence at some point. I hope that the "super tutorial" might help with that.

I really hope for a complete freestyle drum practice mode where we can play whatever we want without being penalized. It would be fun to just jam on it and practice some real rhythms that might not appear in the game or whatever.

If you drum right handed (left hand on snare, right hand on hi-hat), then you should play the bass pedal with your right foot. But when you get to a point where you wanna improve your independence, then switch to your other foot.
I'm an average drummer myself, so when I get the game, I'll be experimenting like crazy to gain independence.

I think i'll personally use my right foot, i tend to figet/bounce my right foot up and down pretty regularly. Possibly anticipation of this game? :p

I asked the same question myself. Im right handed for everything but when it comes to my feet i play soccer and i kick with my left foot. But i have about equal control in both of my legs. I played drums at the demo and i used my right foot on the bass pedal but i found myself being completely out of sync with the song on bass pedal. guess im just gonna have to try it out when i get it to find ouy.

if your right handed and your on a real drum set.
right foot is for the bass pedal,
left foot is for the hi hat.
In this case, you could use either foot.

If you ever plan on playing a real drum set, play with your right foot. As dl said, your left foot is for the hi-hat and you'll be completely off kilter.
Really, it's probably easiest just to train your right foot to be your bass pedal foot. Switching will just confuse you, and make it tougher to build up that muscle memory.

Being a right-handed drummer I believe I'd use my right foot......just used to using my right foot mainly. Only time I use my left is when I'm on the kicker (double bass) pedal.

theyre talking about the bass pedal for the drums for rock band. if you look at the pic of the drums you can see a pedal, thats the bass pedal.

i am a left handed drummer, so i switch my kit around and use my left foot on the bass petal. does anyone know if they are going to have the lefty flip for the drums, or will it just be all open handed drumming? just curious...

I am right handed but I tap so much faster with my left foot.

The out of synch is actually your left and right brain fighting it out to control both sides of your body independently. You really do run into conflicts with either orientation, so pick what feels most comfortable to you.
The points about crossing over to a real kit are valid though. Most modern drumsets could conceivably be set up left foot pedal and right foot controlling hihat (if they were both cable pedals), but it might feel a little goofy.
FWIW my car is a stick and has a little left foot rest when you're not depressing the clutch--and that's been my BD pedal for about the past 7 years. My left is actually a little stronger than my right now because of it. :P

Yeah you can lefty-flip, that's a big reason they made the pads symmetrical.

Right foot if you're a righty, Left foot if you're a lefty.

I'd say try playing the game normal mode, and then lefty flip mode. In normal mode, your snare will be the far left, and you should bass drum with your right foot. If you're lefty flip, snare will be on the far right, and you should bass drum with your left foot.
The important thing, if you care about trying drums at any point, is to leave your free foot for your high hat. You're going to be getting into really weird setups if your snare is on the left side of the set, but you bass drum with your left foot and high hat with your right foot.
As for limb independence, that's a pretty advanced concept. I'd say learn to play the drums as intended, then go from there. No reason to make it harder right off the bat, it won't help you at all in the long run.

I skate goofy (Pop the board with left foot)
Should I do the bass pedal with my left foot too?
I just took turns tapping each foot on the ground hard/fast as I can and the left one was noticably faster and stronger
So I guess I should do that?
