View Full Version : GHIII Demo

No this is not a forum for how or where to download the GHIII demo. But clearly people have played it, wither at the store or by getting THPG or OXM or by sneaking into Neversoft Ninja style and playing it at midnight in a janitors closet.
regardless, now that people have played it....thoughts?
I have to say....meh....it's alright...Not overly fond of the new graphical changes. Like the HUGE set-list, but the guitar battle stuff looks terrible.
Plus I'm completely bored with the whole tier song set-up which is clearly the direction they went...so, especially after the gamespot (and then IGN) article on BWT mode, I have to say RB FTW....just my opinion. But I might still pick up GHIII later for fun...the guitar is kinda cool I gots to admit....

i was sooo hyped for this game then i downloaded the demo and its meh... i guess there is only 5 songs on the demo so i hope the other 65 are good but the whammy seemed weird it diddnt seem as responsive as guitar hero 2's whammy on the notes but i guess the whammy will be better when i pick up the Les Paul. anyway i guess im just getting used to guitar hero 3. im sooo used to the second now i ave to get used to the third one

Once Rock Band arrives GH3 is going into storage.
It's okay, but honestly it feels like a cheap knockoff (which is basically what it is). The menu/interface artstyle is bad, even the fonts look like they're trying too hard, and failing. The loading screen blurbs aren't funny. The increased note window makes it way too easy to blitzkrieg through solos of expert songs I've never played (and in two cases had never heard) before. I don't want it to be ungodly hard but I shouldn't be able to five-star unfamiliar songs on Expert the first time I play them.
Johnny Napalm looks good, Judy Nails is real easy on the eyes but looks nothing like any girl that's ever picked up a guitar...she looks like a pron star. The singer looks like a half-human mutant ogre, which is pretty damn funny. The stage and the fretboard look good, GH finally looks "next-gen" instead of a cleaned-up PS2 port.
It feels "off". The fret buttons are big and round and Fisher Price-like, and again, it's too easy, the note window is too wide. I could five-star Jordan on this in one try, and I can't even beat it in GH2. The previously much feared Dragonforce song will not be a problem.
Also, if you play by striking downward on the strum bar...you're screwed. I normally play by "strumming" with my index finger and thumb held as if I was holding a pick, and striking down on the strum bar. You flat out cannot do this in GH3...I don't know if it's counting it as a doublestrike or what, but it doesn't work. I can play by using my thumb on the strumbar as if it were just a button to push down, but it really ruins my enjoyment of the game. And it's not my XPlorer, as I played GH2 both before and after and it worked fine.
Big thumbs down.

OMG I thought it was just my controller. I had the same problem. I wonder if it's the game dealing with teh x-plorer or what. Anyways all good points. I'm getting te les paul so I hope it performs better in GH3. On the plus side star power was uber easy to deplay and I usually had trouble on GH2.

There are numerous people having this problem, I have run across posts here and there across teh intrawebs this morning about it. Since it's not the guitar, hopefully this is something they will have an adjustable slider in the options menu for. Or at least patch it.

I've got this preordered. Should I cancel it? I played the demo and.. it's meh. The HO/PO is fun for me now, I can actually do it good. But I can't help getting the feeling they screwed something up. I can't put my finger on it, but they did.
I'm mainly getting this for the guitar. And I hope it works for Rock Band. Does it?

I played the demo and I rather enjoyed it... the timing window was a little weird the first time and the down strumming thing did mess with me too... I actually didn't do very well and even failed the metal twice, but I got used to it...
Graphics wise I liked it and even though the singer is fugly the rest of the characters and band look fine...
Gameplay wise I thought it was a little weird at first and like I said the timing window definitely will take some time getting used but I thought the sp worked well and I liked how it tells you your streak...The whammy bar seemed pretty useless but thats not really a big deal. The songs were all quite fun though and even though the HO/PO system is slightly easier I really don't think it's all that easy, I mean there are supposed to be some insane songs so i think it'll all balance itself out and I don't think this game is gonna be easy at all...
But the best part of the game is gonna be the online play and with no lag this game is definitely gonna be worth it... the online play tied in with the guitarhero website is gonna be great...
Overall I think this game is gonna be just fine and with the addition of online multiplayer I think it's gonna be even better than GH2

I played it. It's not too bad. But definitely I wouldn't go nuts over. I plan on still picking it up, because it will have plenty of songs to play.
I did have that same problem while playing down strumming as well. I thought it was me! Things do seem different with the game, but I'll get used to it.
But as most have said, it's something to pass the time for Rock Band, and after that I'll just pop it in if I really feel the need to shred.

Really, Skate fans hate Tony Hawk for some sick reason and it pisses me off. I mean, the majority of these posts are in the Tony Hawk's Proving Ground board! Not a single Skate > Tony Hawk post in the Skate forums. Don't get me wrong, the Skate demo was fun. But I'm sticking with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. For serious.

Anyone else find the note streak pop ups annoying?? I don't need it to tell me every 100 notes or so. they should have just used 100, 500 and 1000

I love the weight, its heavier, but that makes it better.. I love the buttons too.

No doubt, I upgraded to the bundle for the guitar, even though I get the kramer. It's the same build weight may be a bit different but buttons, strum bar, and sadly the whammy, will all be the same.
The whammy bar sucks.
Do you activate SP with the button or tilt? I do both and, it seemed harder to pull off both ways. I'ts harder to access the select button with the side of my palm, may need to go with activating with pinky like some guys.

Some observations from playing the demo:
-The new timing window for HO/PO seems too large for me. I never really felt like I had to hit the buttons in time enough to feel like I was keeping with the beat of the song. It seemed almost to the point where I could hit a note while the next note was nearly on top of the static hole and still have it count.
-Battle Mode blows donkey balls. The whole thing with the power-ups was annoying. I could handle the double notes and the blinking notes just fine, but I hated that my focus was taken away from the song to smack a button repeatedly or tear apart my whammy bar. It really removes you from the whole guitar-playing experience (which isn't that what the games supposed to be about?!). I still hold to the idea that the only people that will want to play this mode are ones that aren't good enough to play expert and need a scapegoat for their lack of ability. Two thumbs down for this mode.
-The sound didn't seem mixed well at all, which was confirmed to me when I popped in GHII afterwards. I'm hoping this might have to do with the fact that the sound for TH:PG wasn't mixed for "guitar playing," but I'm not really sure how things of that nature work.
-Characters are fugly and the general graphics style did not impress. Maybe it's just me but a lot of times, especially when light was shining on objects, they looked very plastic-like.
As another poster mentioned, despite the negativity of the post I think this will be a great time-waster until Rock Band comes out, but I'm not nearly as excited as I thought I would be now.

Definitely a personal opinion. I play on Expert just fine and I had a blast with this mode with my little sister. The power ups make a good laugh and such and it gives her a chance to beat me because she can't do it on Face Off. She plays on medium and I play on expert, and it's definitely an advantage for the medium person especially if you have to lefty flip. As for the blinky notes and such, didn't bother me a bit. I was still able to play the song the entire time my notes were blinking.

My impressions:
- The sound mix was HORRIBLE. I guess they were trying to highlight the guitar part over everything else, but in the end you barely hear the other parts and it takes away from the whole experience. Plus, the sounds made when overstrumming/missing a note is annoying as all hell and overpowers the music, which is distracting. Hopefully some of these issues can be fixed in the options by adjusting the sound volumes.
- Note charts just felt wrong. Many places they just seemed like they were throwing in a chord combination at you just to make things difficult, not because that would be the logical progression of the song. Also, which notes are designated as HO/PO's almost seems to be decided by chart, not the game engine. In GH2, I mostly use a calculation of BPM and distance to determine which notes can be HO/PO'd, though I do still pay attention to the white cap for at least the first note or so, and can judge how many additional notes I don't need to strum for. There were many times where I should have been able to HO/PO onto the note, but the game was requiring me to strum. Extremely annoying.
- I don't care for the art direction. To be honest, I rarely pay attention to what's happening back on stage when playing. However, the lead singer here is ugly as sin, and I found him to be really distracting at first.
Also, if you play by striking downward on the strum bar...you're screwed. I normally play by "strumming" with my index finger and thumb held as if I was holding a pick, and striking down on the strum bar. Ah, wonderful, this would explain why I sucked so much. I guess maybe when we strum all the way down, we hold the bar at that lowest point for a second or so before moving up, and the game has some kind of "turbo" on where is counts that for multiple strums the longer you hold it down? I guess I can try it out and see. I've already got 5 plastic guitars laying around the house, 6 when RB comes out. It would be really ****ty if they end up putting X-plorer players at a disadvantage in order to sell more of their guitars. I really have no need for 7 of these suckers.

well, this is one of the reasons i've been more into RB than gh3. Harmonix already has years of experience with this, and neversoft has none and expects to make the best one yet. when somebody takes over a project, it never turns out the same way again and for somebody who has seen and enjoyed past productions of it, generally it never seems to be as good.

I went down to the Gamestop to pre-order rock band and they had the demo there. I played all the songs except Hit Me With Your Best Shot. It was pretty easy suprisingly enough. The timing window was apparent. But yeah I was actually impressed and it definitly made me think about buying it now. The guitar felt really nice also, except it didn't have a strap so that kind of played a factor in me sucking on a few songs.

I have a ps2, and there arent any gamecrazys in Texas, so I havent played the demo, but I think the game LOOKS just as good as the first one (not second). The note charts are a little off, and there are too many 3 note chords, but nothing can be perfect.
