Vocal Scoring

For guitar, bass, and drums, there's an obvious scoring incentive when you increase the difficulty - as the number of notes increases with each difficulty level, and therefore the potential score increases. However, I can't see how that translates to vocals, given that you sing the same words, and even the same pitch changes (as far as I can see), regardless of the difficulty level, and the only difference is the leeway allowed. Therefore, there doesn't appear to be any scoring incentive for singing expert as opposed to easy, for instance. I wonder if there's a sliding scoring scale for vocals - ie. each "phrase" is worth N on easy, each "phrase" is worth N*2 on medium, etc.

I would think it is something like you said, the higher the difficulty the more points you get for each word you get right probably. That would make the most sense to me, since it is harder to hit those notes so you should get more points for them since like you pointed out nothing changes besides the difficulty.

Thanks - although that thread is almost entirely about the accuracy differences between vocal difficulties, which I was already aware of, rather than how the scoring works.

In fact, the only scoring related comment in that thread suggests that the maximum vocal score will be the same on all difficulty levels, and I can't believe that's true - that just doesn't seem logical.

It doesn't seem logical to me either. KR's scoring was "Every song has a maximum score of 50,000, and those points are divided proportionally between the song's phrases". Rock Band obviously isn't the same way, because the vocal side has adopted the "a streak can raise your multiplier to x4" scoring system from Guitar Hero. It also wouldn't make sense in Rock Band because the other parts are a basic "points per note" scoring system; the guitar scoring is exactly like Guitar Hero halved. That means that the guitar, bass, and drum parts will have a maximum score that varies with how many notes are in the song.

So, if we want to figure out how it's scored, we have to look at the videos, and find that rare isolated vocal phrase to score (I haven't seen any solo vocalist videos yet; that would make it a lot easier). GameTrailers' Jet video shows that:

1. The vocal scoring is still by phrase, not by word, and
2. On the phrase "1, 2, 3, turn your head and come with me," the singer had a rating of poor, had a 1x multiplier, and scored 234 points.

That's all I've found so far; all the other songs are much harder to isolate vocal points from.

I haven't been able to find a thread specifically on maximizing score on vocals. My wife gets 100% on a song and burns all her overdrive when she can. her score was like 47K and change. The leader boards top score was almost 120K. Where the hell does an over 50K discrepancy come from?

It depends on the level that she's playing on. Also, you can score 100% and still not get all of the points available. All notes must be hit at the appropriate pitch and be started and held for the exact right amount of time.

Do the leader boards mix all difficulties together? She was on medium and checked the boards immediatly afterward. I would assume that particular board was meant for medium players. I'll take rest under advisement and she can try it out again... thanks

yeah, they lump all the difficulties together for some stupid reason. and on top of that, there's absolutely no way to filter by difficulty. and scrolling through the leaderboards is a enormous pain in the ass:
