First of all, sorry if this has been done before, but I've done a search and I can't find a similar thread.
I currently have Rock Band for the ps2. As I've seen the DLC list grow every week with some great music, I'd really like to get a new system so that I can enjoy all the extra songs (and online play!)
I'm leaning towards getting a ps3, because from my understanding (and correct me if I'm wrong!) my ps2 Rock Band instruments will work on the ps3 version. All I'd need is to buy the game disc. Doing this will save about $110, but if I can get an xbox 360 for that much cheaper I suppose that I'm indifferent between the two.
As for backwards compatibility, I am indifferent between a 40gb ps3 and the xbox 360 (because I don't own any original xbox games). I know Walmart has some deals on the 40gb model ($100 gift card), so that favours the ps3.
I suppose my question is this: Are both next-gen systems (sorry, no Wii joy) the same for Rock Band? If so, which system offers better value, games, features, etc.?

Both PS3 and Xbox Rock Bands are the same, however PS3 version doesnt have voice chat during online play. And yes PS2 Rock Band instruments should work with a PS3 so if I were you I'd lean towards the PS3 version.

Also, X Box 360 gets the DLC on Tuesdays, and PS3 on Thursdays. Anarchy and I both own a PS3.

Yeah, no voice chat in ps3 version, and I believe the other online modes are not as well structured as the 360 version? Like the xbox 360 lets you have ranked battles, where both randomly matched players both play at the same difficulty, whereas the ps3 version don't have a ranked battle system. (Correct me if I'm wrong..)
I guess you're probably better off getting the ps3 anyway since they're just a bit more expensive than the 360 now.

I think the differences between the versions of Rock Band on both systems are so minimal that you should look at the other (upcoming) games for each system first. As fun as Rock Band is, you'll probably want some other games as well at some point, and then it's nice to know which system will give you what you like.
I'm more than happy with the PS3 myself, though. I bought it for RB and MGS4, and both have delivered. The bundled games that came with the system over here (Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank) have been great fun as well.
Besides, the PS3 is the system that lets you jam with the likes of Anarchy, BillLauren, Dave, Frizzy_bj, Sillystou and yours truly... can you think of a better selling point than that? :D ;)

Maybe it's worth mentioning that in September I'll be taking my system and Rock Band back with me to Scotland for university. Does the ps3 have reliability issues like xbox's red ring o' death? I don't want to have to send it back to the states just to get it working!

If you get a PS3, you'll only have to buy a new Rock Band disk. The PS2 instruments work exactly the same on PS3.
If you get X-Box, you'll have to get whole new bundle. Plus, you have to pay for X-Box Live to play online. The PSN is free.
EDIT:
The PS3 is a much more reliable piece of equiment. No red rings of death. (Although no hardware is perfect.)

Nope. Another big plus is that both blu-ray movies and PS3 games are region-free, so you won't have any compatibility issues in Europe.
Where are you going to study in Europe, by the way? If it's Edinburgh, you're in for a treat...my wife and I got married there, most beautiful city in the world, IMO.

No hardware problems for my PS3, and I've had it since launch day here in England, which is 15 months.

No, if I'm not mistaken, the Playstation 3 is a much more reliable system than the Xbox 360.(I have 5 RRoDs counting, I only stay for the friends and games).
Edit:All three posters above me are correct. I thought I add my thoughts being a 360 owner.

That's great news! Does this mean that if I buy any games in Scotland, I can play them online there as well?
I'll be returning for my third year in St. Andrews, about an hour up the coast from Edinburgh. It really is a beautiful place! My uncle lives there and I usually get to spend a few days when I'm coming or going back home to New Jersey

PS3 FTW!!!
I love my PS3 and has not disappointed me one bit. But then again i was going to get PS3. Not a big fan of Xbox. I have always been loyal to Playstation ever since the original.

Yes, online play works fine. A handful of games are region locked, though (ie: if you buy the Euro version, you can only play against Euro players online), but game like Rock Band work fine. You can even access the US PSN store with your account without a problem.
