So swung by a gamecrazy today and started talking to the guy at the counter about Rock Band. He said that he was going to be dissapointed with the game because of the lack of options and the price. I didnt really say anything, i just listened. He told me that he was bummed that "they" announced there are only going to be 35 songs in the game and that its a waste to buy it because it is going to be $200. On top of that, he said, each song is going to be 200 MS points to download. "Way too much money if you ask me", is what the guy said.

First of all, we all know that there are already 40+ confirmed games and the price is set at $169.99. On top of that, they havent announced pricing yet on the DLC, so this guy really doesnt know what he is talking about. I am very disapointed because if i was a regular customer, he might have been able to dissuade me from buying Rock Band.

I think HMX needs to come out with a blanket announcement that is sent down to all retailers so everyone has the same information and so that the scrubs working the front counter will have the correct info. Who knows how many customers this guy, and uninformed guys like him, are losing for this awesome game.

People who work at Game stores never know what they're talking about. But I'm surprised he wasn't praising the game so that he could get your money.

Ahhh, GameCrazy. An endless source of amusement!

It's my primary game shop just because it's convenient to my home, but it also provides a secondary form of entertainment. I'm convinced they train their guys to babble forth on any topic that comes up whether they know anything or not, just to make it look like they DO know stuff and are Knowledgeable Game Experts(tm). Anything to make that sale and build credibility (even fake credibility).

I've got $20 down on my preorder there, and they assure me I'll be able to pick up my box set on Black Friday, that the early preorder means they won't run out or anything. We'll see when the day comes, given they usually get games a day late.

Yeah. You would think being employed by a game store, that the employees would be self educated. How long does it take to learn the specifics? Bout 5 minutes. Idiots!

Well, to be fair, they'd need to spend 5 minutes on just about every major and semimajor title out there to be walking gamer knowledge bases. That includes games they may not otherwise play. To folks who are posting on Rock Band forums, obviously we've got a vested interest and are lapping up all the latest obscure info, but not everybody's doing that.

Still, I wish they'd just own up and admit they don't know anything about a game -- or even that they may be misremembering -- rather than prattle on outdated or incorrect trivia.

Game retail. Not a fun career, I'd hazard...

It seems that there are employees like that at every store. I used to work at a GameStop, and there was this one girl that was always spouting false information about games coming to systems that they were not confirmed for, and other stuff.

But I do agree, now that most of the information is set in stone, it should be forwarded to all of the retailers. All that it would take take would be an email from their corporate office with the official price, bundle contents, and a correct number for the amount of songs the game will include.

They have all the info. In fact most of the time they have it at least a few days before you do via press release. Sadly, we can't tell them how to educate their employees - and there will always be people who don't actually know stuff pretending that they do. Luckily, most of the time, they are fully disregarded.

That's not so bad.

I checked at Blockbuster the other day.
Apprently it doesn't come out untill December and it cost $249.99. I just shook my head and walked out.

Then I checked at Future Shop. It wasn't in their system at all so they just went to Wikipedia to tell me the 23rd and to add $30 to the price for being in Canada.

Me: "Hey have you heard anything on Rock Band? Like drums?"
GameStop manager: "Well the DK bongos should be compatible. I can't wait."

I win.

I make sure the people who work at the Game Crazy near my home are as well informed as I...Mainly because I spend a few hours in there talking with my friend who works there (and I play some GH3).

It's not just game workers... it's everyone in retail.

It's a job they do for a paycheck. I worked in retail for sometime... and it's horrible.

I check these boards every day, to see what the new news is. And I come on here today and see you guys insulting people who work at video game stores.

Not cool. We have a lot of game we have to learn about, I know absolutely nothing about sports games in general, but its really nice to know that people come on to message boards and bad mouth me because I cant keep up with everything that is going on.

Don't lump us all in together, some of us try.

That's funny becuase I swung by the gamecrazy at my house today and got my pre-order in. I asked how many people there had pre-orderd and he said around 6-10 people. So I asked him if they had any news about the release date or pricing and he said that, their official word that they have gotten is that it's Nov 23rd and for $200. Although he had heard online that Rockband was going to be coming out early on the 20th and for $169.99 although they havn't recieved any updates to their systems yet.

It's not that you guys don't know anything. This is more about the ones who THINK they know everything, and then end up giving false information.

Seconded. Like I said in my post, if a guy admits he doesn't know or is only half-sure, that's fine. And it's impossible to keep up with every single game out there. I respect any retail guy who has to put up with the mess as long as they know their limits.

It's the know-it-alls who refuse to admit that they aren't the definitive resource for all things gaming that are the problem. I know lack of confidence could mean a lost sale, but overconfidence WILL mean a lost sale.

My favorite example was me walking into a store and the clerk goes "Heyyyy, it's Mr. Halo 3, yeah!" ...and I just stop dead, because I'm A) 3 feet tall and B) visibly physically disabled and C) not a Halo fan at all, nor did I preorder and D) there is no conceivable way the guy could've mixed me up with some other Halo junkie... he just wanted to appear like he knew me and took a random guess. Har. Twit.

Yea its funny to go to game stores and ask an employee about a topic you know everything about just to spark a conversation because you have nothing else to talk about, just to see the so-called game expert start to talk and all that comes out is bull****.

But, I started working a game crazy and if I don't know something about a game, I'll tell you, I wont bull**** someone, because I know what its like to be bull****ted(I went to an EBGames before GH2 came out and they told me that crazy train was the final encore, when I already knew the entire setlist).

Just to let you guys know, I'm not trying to defend all game store workers, I'm just letting you know that I'm not a jerk like those workers that we have all come to know and love(hate).

PS: Game Crazy workers(like myself) don't get any commission on selling any products, so don't think that you're being conned when an employee sounds like he's going out of his way to sell you a game or console, sometimes they just really like that particular product and they want you to enjoy it too.

Discount clubs, and warranties, on the other hand, do give employees commission.

I used to work at an EB back in the day and i was knowlegeable about a lot of games. Mainly because i was interested. It is easy to retain that amount of info when you are really interested in it. If you dont know the 100% truth, you shouldnt up-sell or BS about a game and that was what the dude was doing.

I work at EB Games. Honestly I never give wrong info. If someone asks me something I don't know anything about, I'm glad. I tell them I don't know and they leave. When it's something I do know about, I love giving the info. All of our familiar customers only talk to me because of this. I got yelled at one time becuase our store manager was working with us and a customer was like "See this dude right here is the ****! He tells it how it is! Only person I'll come to." Right after that my manager must have been offended? He told me basically to start bull****ting. I said I don't get paid for that.
