View Full Version : Drums touch-sensitive?!

This *must* have been asked before, but I honestly couldn't find it:

Are the drums touch-sensitive, i.e. will harder hits result in louder sounds as with real drums?

Check the "ScoreHero invades Harmonix" thread. They discuss drum sensitivity/durability in there (There's a link in the original post)

I'm not positive but I think no matter how hard or soft you hit the pads it sounds the same in game.

Not sure if this was discussed in that article, but the RB drum controller is just a standard controller in the shape of a drum set. There is no velocity sensitivity, and hitting them louder or softer will not change the volume of the in-game drums.

The sensitivity discussed over on ScoreHero is refering to how hard you have to strike the pad for it to register a hit. This guy is asking about the drum's ability to register a harder hit, and translate that into a louder sound from the game, and this was not discussed before.

As to the original question, it has not been specifically said that I've ever read. But all videos and evidence suggest that no, how hard you hit the drum does not effect the drum track playing on the game. All inflection and accents that I've heard so far match the original recording from the artist, unaffected by what the player is doing. The only place I wouldn't be so sure on would be drum fills, but if I had to bet money, I'd still say no.

The four drum pads are only capable of detecting hits vs. non-hits. Harder hits making it louder in-game is something that would be cool, but isn't really a priority with this game concept right now. I wouldn't be surprised to see more advanced peripherals in the future that are eventually capable of translating the hardness of a hit into the game.

Thanks for the quick answers. I guess it was a long shot, but since the PS3 pad's buttons are analogue (therefore pressure-sensitive) I thought they might have picked up on that. Any info on a 'free drum mode' apart from the occasional drum fills? It would be nice to just drum along a chosen song without any restrictions. I'd also love to be able to accompany 'real' music, e.g. a guitar-playing friend, using the RB drum kit and my stereo.

I just want to know if you can play them like bongos.

I don't see why not. Might get really, really tiring on some Expert songs though.

yeah but that opens the door for that incredible bongo solo in iron butterflys in a gadda da vida.
